she's only

called for help because of her blissey. rhian knows this, and honestly she can't say she minds. as a lilycove university freshman applying to the hoenn pokémon league's research branch as an assistant, every little thing she did could add to her chances of being accepted into the program.

besides, she was never one to say no to those in need. or to anyone, really; it was kind of a problem.

with the pokémon center filled to the brim with injured pokémon, many other league-owned properties would come to work as makeshift emergency health centers. it is in one of these that the blonde ends up being sent to "volunteer".

despite rhian herself not being trained in first aid (she's sure this will eventually be covered in her training), her blissey has a long history of offering aid to pokémon in need, as well as those in not so much need. confidence in her blissey is all that makes her fight how awkward she's feeling when she asks the next person to come within range, "would you like us to look at your pokémon's health for you?"

the effects of slateport can be felt far and wide but few feel it more then lilycove city. those who fled by boat find themselves ferried off to safety at a moment's notice, left homeless and empty handed. the sister port city can only do so much and the league is scrambling to tend to those bleeding from the aftermath's of the tragic night.

silph co. is one of many to open their doors. their head quarters in slateport may be down but the company is quick to scramble and realign their resources. it's a repeat of what happened in kanto and fernando's prepared. those under his helm open up their doors and redistribute what they can. food, sleeping bags, toiletries—none are turned away as the lilycove contest hall becomes a temporary shelter for the slateport refugees.

"let me lend a hand."

the next person to come up to rhian is carrying an injured pikachu. they were both caught up in an EXPLOSION that rocked the docks as they barely caught the last fleeing boat. dried blood cakes their various injuried as the young boy struggles to keep upright.

fernando wraps an arm around the young boy's shoulders, allowing him to shift his weight onto his taller frame and relief himself of the effort needed to stay standing. two slowkings and a kirlia flank his side. sweat beads down all of their heads as they prepare for another prolonged session of HEAL PULSE.

"looks like it'll take more than one pokemon to patch them up."

the sight

that greets them is quite grim.

so far, rhian had seen a sprained ankle, a couple minor wounds, a dehydrated marshtomp. in contrast, the pikachu's burn marks and coughing hint of a fire, but the additional injuries complete the puzzle and tell the rest of the tale: this is the result of an

explosion

all that crosses her mind is an appalled that's awful, but she can't exactly say that—not to the boy's face—so she gulps down her horror and nods at the man.

while their pokémon join efforts to heal the pikachu, rhian kneels down to the boy's height. she offers him a friendly smile. "don't worry, your pikachu will be all better soon. just hang in there, okay?" the boy's eyes follow her, but stare back emptily. rhian feels herself tear up. he can't hear her. it takes all of her emotional strength to instead reach for the pen hanging on her pocket and write her message on her small notebook.

it's okay now. you're both safe.

"that poor boy," she speaks up after he's moved on to reunite with his parents and they've taken him for a checkup, "my heart goes out to him." his pikachu would need further treatment to recover from the burn marks, but his hearing? that would require technology they currently didn't have.

turning to the man, she adds, "thanks for helping back there. i don't know if cherub's
heal pulse
would have been enough."

fernando observes, speechless. he's more of a solemn guardian, watching over the scene and keeping up with the progressively worse situation around them. it is rhian who tends to the emotional injuries of those they touch. she's able to demonstrate a heart warming empathy that fernando can't quite match. instead, he allows his actions and steadfast persistence carry his charisma. he works tirelessly, a pillar of resolute strength. his touch is rough but what they need now is durability.

"tragic. reminds me of kanto."

they're both given a moment to chatter. pokemon shift positions and fernando points to a few more pokemon that have yet to receive treatment. his own scatter, dividing up to better spread out their workflow.

"that's what i'm here for—that's what we're all here for. it's the least we can do to help. thank you for your service."

rhian takes in

his words slowly, as if picking them out with tweezers. until this moment, the tragedy in kanto had always been distant: word of mouth, contemporary history, the news. despite hailing from a city bordering kanto, her family managed to keep her sheltered enough and shipped off all the way to hoenn before the rocket takeover.

"you've been there," she breathes out, awestruck.

with the emergency case tended to, the queue returns to its first-come, first-serve basis. the man's pokémon disperse, but rhian only has the one. the blissey follows his lead towards a group of ailing psychic types.

out comes the smallest of giggles, equal parts nervous laughter and honored smile. "oh, i'm not— i'm not in the force." the smile falters for only a second as self-consciousness takes over her features. most people here would have been league officers, wouldn't they? "not yet, anyways!"

a gardevoir is in the middle of removing the coagulating blood from a duosion with

telekinesis

when they get to the scene. the sight of a duosion bleeding internally is one rhian's sure she won't forget, maybe as much as the boy and his pikachu. she can literally see the blood expanding inside the translucent green. a moment passes before they can

the gruesome setting doesn't discourage her. she may not feel like smiling, but looking as grim as the patients surely felt would only lead to excessive worry on their part—which in turn could result in their situation worsening.
