he was here, not that he wanted to be. a man his age could be out doing a great number of things, none of them good. yet, here he was, lowest on the totem pole and assigned... guard duty.

he sets down his magazine, turning an annoyed look onto the cage.

"what do you want?"

he lets out a sigh of annoyance and pushes himself to his feet, sliding the magazine in a lazy stroke until it's off the table and into his hands once more.

"uh, people's magazine." he gives another glance at the thing before he rolls it up and, in a surprising move, places it between one of the bars.

"somethin' about the champion, if you're interested."

he walks back to his desk, content for a mid-afternoon nap.

he grunts on his walk back, a heavy thud following as his heels meet the top of the desk, and the creak of his chair tells her he's leaning into back into it.

"im sure i don't need to tell you that, when you're bored, just about anything will do."
it certainly doesn't help that he was restricted to zero electronics. security measure or whatever.

"nothing in there about the league, so, don't get your hopes up."

it clicks.

avery steps inside and listens to it close behind him. with a trickle of forced effort he taps a rolled up magazine against his open hand.

"you'll never guess the solution to last week's mystery - hint hint, you were wrong." he leaves it dangling on the rusted steel, looking through the cage to spot the frail woman.

"you look like shit." he did too, admittedly, but he doesn't focus on that.

he slips something something in-between the pages - a warm bun.

"read and find out." he says in a chastising tone, eyes still taking the disheveled woman in.

she didn't know it but, conditions here were getting worse. rations were getting low, potable Eater restricted, and that was just the beginning.

"still no excuse y'know." stacked next to the magazine and buz,, he places a room temperature water bottle.

he waited, leaned back against the concrete wall, arms folded and fingers tapping idly against his tricep.

"boring," he says with a sigh - it was his usual answer. "might be the last magazine for a while. people are getting antsy."

he tosses a look in his peripheral, to the cell door and the looming shadows from within - to her.

"ya holding up?"

"i won't be by for a few weeks. i've been assigned to do something else, so, you'll have to get by without me and my amazing company for a bit."
