He wondered why nobody wanted to take this request.[break][break]

It was just simple guard duty![break][break]

…or was there something else that they weren’t supposed to know about? wondering if he had to get a little serious, he decided to bring his usual team of six along—at least this wasn’t going to involve launching some energy at some malfunctioning machine this time…to be honest he’d lost a little respect with the Space Center’s staff, because what the hell were they doing, using an untested machine and asking two people to blast it with electrical energy?![break][break]

Shit, I can still remember picking glass out of my hair after that fiasco… he thought angrily to himself, waiting outside the Mossdeep Space Center one balmy evening. He knew that he was waiting for someone to show up—and hopefully they didn’t have to sic their Pokémon companions around the area.[break][break]

He already had his Braviary on aerial recon, and the little Cutiefly was resting on his nose after having gone around the place a few times.[break][break]

His Magmortar was coming around the corner, him having partnered up the Fire-type with his Riolu, Vincent—and the smaller Fighting-type made a yipping noise and pointed down the way, which caught his attention.[break][break]

“Someone’s coming?” he asked the Riolu, who nodded his way.[break][break]

“Alright, thank you, Vince,” he said, pocketing his phone and looking up at the approaching figure…

Thomas would fly onto the scene on the back of his Hydreigon. Upon landing, Thomas would give the dragon a pat on the head, before dismounting, then sending the three-headed beast up to do aerial recon. The trainer, looking rather dejected, walked up to the guard post where he was to meet his partner, Alexei Ivanov. By now, he figured the Gym Leader would've heard about the results of the rescue mission, and the investigation he found himself under, thanks to the actions of his subordinate.

"Alexei, how are you doing?", Thomas asked the Gym Leader, trying to put on a smile, one that didn't last very long. From there, he would send out the rest of his Pokemon on guard duty. Voltanis the Vikavolt would take to the skies, taking on a different position from Kalameet. Ripper and Brutus would take to patrolling the area around them, watching out for any signs of intruders. Brutus in particular, thanks to the sprig he kept between his teeth, would be handy for such a task. Finally, Freke would stand near his master, serving as a communication hub, and quick backup, should his services be needed.

"I suppose you've heard the news, right?", Thomas asked his partner.

Sooner or later the Braviary would be joined by a Hydreigon as he soared through the air—at least he wasn’t going to be alone this time. He knew that Alexei had to keep Gabriel near him just in case something happened—and that he’d spotted some several familiar companions scattering from the vantage point that they were at right now.[break][break]

Back down on the ground, the Riolu came to a stop before sniffing the air around Thomas, and then slowly approaching him and giving him a reassuring pat on the knee.[break][break]

“Agni, go on, you have this covered. Kyou’s in the air and you have companions just in case things go south,” he said in the Magmortar’s direction, watching as the Fire-type then joined the substantial Pangoro around the area.[break][break]

He still hadn’t forgotten that damned experience with the Pangoro from before…[break][break]

Anyway, the Riolu was distressed—having picked up on Thomas’ own aura before looking back and forth between the two humans. He was there to help calm the brown-haired one down as much as possible![break][break]

“You don’t sound so… chipper,” he began, noting the change in disposition as he was being alerted by his Riolu. “I’ve seen it… it’s a circus. What exactly happened?” he asked, hoping the other would be willing to answer that brief inquiry of his.[break][break]

“I… don’t really believe the media… you know how shitty it is,” he added a few moments later. “I’d rather go straight to the source and ask them what happened.”

As Thomas walked up to the Gym Leader, he would be greeted by the Riolu. Thomas would give the blue pup a pat on the head, and flash it a small smile in response to the reassuring pat he got on the knee. The smile itself was fleeting, as his expression slacked back into lingering dismay. He could tell that the Riolu had picked up on his emotional state, looking clearly distressed. Alexei himself was able to easily pick up on Thomas' state, not that it was really all that hard.

"Long story short, the two men attacked us on sight, bringing out six Pokemon between them. Given their drunken state, the way their Pokemon behaved, and the fact that they were anything but scared, I say it's safe to say they were Rockets. But even then, it doesn't excuse my subordinate roasting them alive.", he would tell Alexei, getting down to brass tacks.

"But even if Agent Saber was out of line, it was ultimately my fault for not properly reigning her in.", Thomas would continue with a sigh, putting his hands in his pockets as he stood with the Fortree Gym Leader. "After all, I knew something was up with her the moment we met.", Thomas muttered, clearly in regret to what happened.

It wasn't the fact that three Rockets died during the mission. After all, the men sent their Pokemon after them, and outright attempted to maim Stormy with their Sandslash. It even looked like they were attempting to radio in for reinforcements as things continued on. And even if he didn't aim his gun at the Commissioner, or any of those present in the warehouse, the Admin guarding the Commissioner was still a potential threat.

They all made their choice when they threw their lot in with Team Rocket.

What bothered Thomas was the fact that any intelligence they had on them was brought to their graves. If he could've had it his way, he would've taken the Rockets alive, and pumped them for information. While the value of the two drunken guards was dubious at best, considering they were most likely cannon fodder who knew nothing about what the upper echelon had planned, if they did know anything, their heavily inebriated state would've made it easier for them to spill whatever they knew. The Admin, on the other hand, would've been a valuable catch, having access to vital information that could've aided in their war effort. The problem would've been pumping him for his knowledge, since he'd be far less likely to talk.

"Of course, what wasn't covered on the news, but I'm sure you've been filled in on, considering Stormy's involvement, was the death of a Rocket Admin, armed with a handgun, who was guarding over the Commissioner in the warehouse. He met the same fate as the two drunken guards outside the warehouse, roasted to death by a Fire Spin performed by Agent Saber's Chandelure.", he'd continue on. "At first, I wondered if it was either the liquor, or something else that caused a Fire Spin to outright roast those men alive, rather than just trap them in the vortex of fire. But after seeing what it did to that Admin, I'm wondering just what that thing is made of.", he'd confess to Alexei.

The moment he heard the other side of the story, his eyebrows went up so high, they almost threatened to vanish into his hairline. “That—you know, the way the news presented their side of the story? It was complete and utter bullshit,” he began with a dour look on his face.[break][break]

“I’m not sure how much influence Rocket’s managed to exert, but to have the press release something like that… I’m starting to speculate that some of them might be working for the press at this point as insiders. Moles. But then again, this is nothing but pure speculation at this point,” he added a few moments later; thoughtful look on his face.[break][break]

Silence fell between them for a few moments, before he collected his thoughts and then voiced what was on his mind.[break][break]

“How—what I want to know is, how in the hell can a Chandelure’s flames incinerate someone alive? To ashes, if nothing else? I know that they’re heralds of the dead, but no Fire Spin attack can be that powerful—and then you mentioned something about alcohol, right? Was… was the ‘Admin’ reeking of it, too? Or just the two Grunts that got caught in the line of fire…” he mused, his mind going a mile a minute.[break][break]

“Oh, speak of which—when exactly did this happen? I’m not sure if you were aware of something also going down at Navel Rock…”[break][break]

Well, even he had a story to tell. But he wondered if the other would like to hear it.

Thomas found himself surprised by what Alexei had to say. Perhaps it was the fact that perception turned against him after the fact that warped his expectations of Alexei to give him some sort of shit over what went down. "To be honest, it's hard to say, at least for now. While I don't doubt Rocket would've gotten its tendrils in the local media, especially with a story like this being pushed out, this is what I've come to expect of the media in general. If it bleeds, it leads. They'll push any sensationalist garbage out they can, regardless of who's side they're on.", he'd reply to his friend. "But I sure as shit don't doubt Rocket's got someone spinning stories in their favor, while potentially looking out for any threats.", he'd continue.

After a moment of silence, Thomas listened as his friend broke it. "No, the admin in question didn't seem drunk. But then, I didn't see much of him, aside from being roasted alive while Lao's Gallade teleported the Commissioner out. Kyle did try to reach out to him, only for Agent Saber's Chandelure to roast him alive. And as for how the flames were that powerful, even I couldn't tell you. That whole fucking night was a trip.", he'd tell Alexei.

It was then that something began to approach the group. "Looks like this night just got more interesting.", Thomas muttered, gesturing Alexei over to the bushes.

“Have you—have you gone to visit her? The… The Commissioner, I mean,” he continues, quiet and contemplative. He’s trying to focus on what Thomas had said—the way the sensationalist garbage had come spewing out, it was just plain nuts at this point.[break][break]

“What are they going to get out of it, anyway? Asides from trying to ruin the League’s reputation, which might I add… I don’t know, I’ve been getting the feeling something’s about to go down. Not sure. But you know instincts… they’re almost always right. Sometimes too much so,” he adds a few moments later.[break][break]

Now that he’s musing on how a Chandelure could be able to incinerate someone into a dead crisp was possible, he couldn’t comprehend it. While the Litwick line are native to Unova, he knows that their reputation as heralds of death only preceded them because of all the ghost stories that surrounded their line so much.[break][break]

Maybe it was a good thing he didn’t pick up that Litwick years ago, otherwise he’d have been dead now. But that was neither here nor there, and this was the right now.[break][break]

“Wait, who’s—“ he says presently, looking up from his quiet musing and quickly fishing out one of the last few Pokéballs he has on him. Ready to throw the Salamence out just in case whoever—or whatever—was coming their way wasn’t friendly.
