[attr="class","inner-finally"]This weekend wasn't one that would be wasted, not after all the plans she'd made for the upcoming weeks. A backpack and a lengthy flight gets her to Fortree, a quick search over the net having guaranteed a whole day of fun to be had at the local ren-faire.

But where should she start? That question echoes in her head as she stands with Reiner by her side, their eyes drawn to every corner of the festival that sparkles and shines. It's filled with raucous laughter, soaked in cheer and readily invites her into the midst - It's a quaint memory of being brought to a street fair for the first time.

"Let's try... over there." Nudging Reiner, she points to the game store with a strangely large tank. "Looks fun, don'tcha think?"

No. But… He just so happens to have been in Fortree to deliver some supplies to the local ranger HQ, and he also just so happens to have spotted the event on his way out of the forest city. Why not check it out, right?

The pond draws his attention first, not because he cares at all for catching fishes, but because the prize for it happens to be plushies resembling all sorts of pokémon, and the biggest one, the one that’s supposed to be awarded to the person who catches the most Magikarp, that one is the one his gaze fixes on. The one he wants. Not for himself, but for his Yamper, mind you. Dame Clover Cottonbottom is ever so spoiled.

”Sure. I’ll give it a shot.” He tells the person in charge of the game, and it’s only then that he notices the girl, gazing down towards her and her Luxray. Her presence doesn’t change anything, he’s still getting that plushie.

[attr="class","inner-finally"]The plushies catch her eye, her fingers laced with Reiner's mane as she slows to a stop. It's big and soft and looks very much huggable - Much like the Corsola doll she has been holding onto ever since she returned from the other world...

"I'd like to try!" She smiles, stepping up and placing some coins on the table. The gamemaster grunts, passing her a net as he gestures for her to take her best shot. So she does so, carefully standing by the tank and looking around for the slowest moving Magikarp.

"Alley... oop!"

Her net strikes fast, ensnaring the fish and pulling it straight up to the surface. Then, she swings it over to her own smaller tank and releases it. As she does that, Reiner watches the tank for another possible ~~victim~~ target, pointing with a paw and growling at her.

Most people wouldn’t be big on the idea of ruining a kid’s fun. They would see her playing her game, back away, and let her enjoy herself.

Tam, though? Tam couldn’t care less that the kid is there. He wants the prize, so he’ll play the game and win, and if that ruins Eris Halla’s fun, well… that’s too bad for her. It’s not even that he doesn’t like children. The thought of how she might feel or how his actions might affect her just… completely eludes him.

Crouching down by the tank, it’s immediately that he makes his first attempt, ensnaring an unsuspecting fish with his net and releasing it into the smaller tank beside him. Is it the one the Luxray had been eyeing? Yes. Does Tam realise as much? No.

That much is inconsequential to him, and there isn’t even a call of celebration before capturing the second fish.

Why is there even a game like this at a ren-faire? Why is there a ren-faire in Hoenn to begin with? Tam is no history expert, but this sure doesn’t seem like the sort of place where any of this would be historically accurate…

Oh well, the plushie is all that matters.

She squints at him for a second, but decides to move on anyways, whistling softly as she scoops up her second and third fish. Reiner growls back at times, nudging her arm and snorting when she dips her net into the water.

"Another one!" She calls out, grinnning as she nets her fourth. Every now and then, she does throw a look over to the stranger's tank, always counting to try and remain at least one ahead of him. If it's a fight he wants, it's a fight he gets!

Maybe one day in the distant future, when Tam has his own children, he will be merciful and let them win at silly games like these. Hell, maybe he’ll even help them and they’ll all have a great time with it. This particular kid’s happiness, however, couldn’t matter any less to him.

Right now, Eris Halla’s happiness is in direct conflict with his wishes.

Of course, such complex consideration regarding the feelings of another does not cross the ranger’s mind, but he does narrow his eyes when seeing that the girl is managing to keep up. That just won’t do. He puts down his net, rolling up the sleeves of his ranger uniform, and once he’s done and picks the net back up, the next Magikarp is caught within seconds.

A kid may have all the enthusiasm and determination in the world, but in the end, a kid is still a kid, and he sure is faster and stronger, and the way his tank fills up with Magikarp comes as proof of it.

[attr="class","inner-finally"]For once, an adult seems to take her seriously, even taking off his coat just to face her properly. However, him picking up the pace only serves to fuel her desire to win, her eye narrowing as she quickly rolls up her sleeves and stretches her wrists.

Every fish he picks up, she matches. Every time he goes for a Magikarp, she and Reiner find another in the opposing direction. And with how fast the two of them seem to be snatching the fishes up, it isn't long until a crowd begins to stop and watch their antics.

Even the storekeeper seems amused, his finger wagging as he counts the remaining number of Magikarp in the main tank. Then he turns his attention back to the crowd, grinning as he starts taking bets from passing visitors. Is it considered illegal? Eris wouldn't know. After all, she's too focused on trying to beat this absolute stranger!

Tam doesn’t notice the crowd gathering, he doesn’t notice the bets, and to be honest, he barely even notices the girl and her Luxray. What he does notice, however, is the Magikarp, and the fact that there’s concerningly less and less of them in the main tank.

Somehow, the girl has managed to keep up and come close to taking his prize.

Close, but not close enough to catch the last couple of fishes before he does.

”HA!” He hadn’t said a sound for minutes, but when he finally opens his mouth, of course it has to be just as heccatches the last of the fishes. It’s a yell: loud, victorious, and arguably far too ecstatic for a man who is competing against a girl who is only twelve. Tam doesn’t consider that, obviously. He came here to win a prize and win a prize he has.

And, when standing to go claim said reward, does he turn to look at the girl to check that her feelings aren’t hurt?

[attr="class","inner-finally"]They draw closer and closer to the end of their duel, a fierce battle of the nets and sheer wits as they fight for whatever remains. And yet at the end, there can only be one victor.

As she watches the stranger snatch the last Magikarp before her eyes, she scrunches her nose and inhales sharply. But no curses or tears will escape her, not when she knows its just a game. If anything, she's happy to wait her turn for a prize, shrugging to Reiner as the game master hands the giant plushie off to the man.

Why did he want such a big plushie? She doesn't know... Maybe he's lonely at night and needs a friend to keep him company in the dark. Adult have some secrets they can't speak about at times!

"I'll take the Flareon plushie, please!"

Defeat is met with grace, her fingers pointing at the relatively smaller plushie and accepting it with open arms. If anything, she wonders if the man will go on to ruin some other kid's day with how competitive he is...

Oh well, she's sure someone will take care of him if he becomes a real problem!
