Brine filled the air at the cavern, the scent of the ocean being tangible and ever-present even during low tide’s hours. It was a strange place to him, unfamiliar and different from everything he was used to, and apparently, the same could be said about most Hoennians.

From what he had been told, most people didn’t venture this deep into Shoal Cave; where the ice overtook the cavern and hung from the rocky ceiling in the form of sharp icicles. When they did, getting lost apparently wasn’t a rarity, and so it was that assignments like the one he had been given came to exist: find the missing cartographer.

A bit of a high-risk mission to be assigned as his first one in Hoenn, but the reality of it was that he was mostly here to accompany Laurence Anderson. And, of course, as should only be expected, the irony of a cartographer getting lost completely eluded Tam.

”...At least it’s better than finding someone lost in the desert.” He really didn’t look forward to visiting that part of Hoenn, and the cool temperatures of Shoal Cave were pleasant enough, even if he had to look for his parka before heading to the island.

In hindsight, that was maybe for the best.

“…better down here than outside, summer’s almost here, too,” he mused quietly.

Unlike Tam, the complete and total irony of the situation hadn’t been lost on Lars. How in the actual fuck did a cartographer, someone who was knowledgeable with exploring and taking record of the lay of the land, had gotten fucking lost in a cave like this?

Well, to Lars, Shoal Cave felt like another ‘home’ at this point; especially during the worst of the summer months, because having a connection with a certain something had only exacerbated his hatred for the heat—clearly ice did not like fire at all.

And then he realized something.

“Don’t you find it odd? Out of all people, a mapmaker, getting lost… especially with a place they’re supposed to be deeply familiar with at this point,” he thought out loud as they traversed a familiar-looking corri—

Uh oh.

Had perhaps, the ~~idiot~~ missing person found ‘that’ cavern by accident…?

For the most part, this was just parroting of the things Tam himself had been told when announcing to friends and family that he would be moving to the region. After all, few things bothered the Unovan, and summer’s heat could admittedly be one of them, but as if made of perfect contradictions, napping under the sun was also one of Tam’s all time favourite activities. Was he some sort of feline or something?

Right. A cartographer was a mapmaker, and they probably had been mapping Shoal Cave when going missing. Now that Lars made him consider it properly, it did seem a little odd, but then again…

”Eh… What if they slipped or something?” Tam shrugged dismissively, because as far as he was aware, most people seemed terribly prone to making silly mistakes like those. And it was slippery, mind you, but it thankfully wasn’t Tam’s first time dealing with conditions of the sort.

”Do you come here often?” He asked then, since it soon became clear that Lars seemed to know the area quite well.

Slipping was a possibility, however he’d clean forgotten about another factor:

That motherfucking Glalie.

“Either that, or one of the apex Pokémon cornered them somewhere…” he voiced out loud—originally meant to be just a thought, but holy shit…

“…I better warn you now, there’s a Glalie that wanders around this cave system. Likes to think he’s the boss of everything. But truth be told he’s no longer the boss…” he trailed off.

Shit, what if the crazy cartographer had found the cavern where the—

“I do. It’s the only place cold enough to withstand Hoennian summers. And summers around here are no fucking joke, heat waves become pretty common around July to early August…” he continued, before he thought he felt a frigid blast of wind shake the cavern.

Just as Tam had suspected, Laurence Anderson did know the cave system well. Even well enough to be familiar with the pokémon roaming the area. Of course, if the Unovan had been more of a suspicious person, he would have perhaps pried for more information as to why the Head Ranger spent so much time in a gelid cavern, but Tam being Tam, he found Lars’ explanation to be sufficient.

It made sense: if summers in Hoenn really were that unbearably hot, of course some people would do anything in their power to avoid that weather.

”Really? I never had to deal with heat like that in Icirrus. Can’t say I’m looking forward to it.” He sighed, and just as he did, his breath was taken away by a wave of frigid wind. Too much heat wasn’t enjoyable, but the same could be said about too much cold, and even if Tam had grown up in a city that was often covered in snow, he still found himself sneezing…

”That probably wasn’t the Glalie you mentioned, huh?”

The smallest of smirks reached his lips.

But, if it hadn’t been, what caused the gust? As far as he was aware, there weren’t any exits out of the cave marked to be nearby.

“No, definitely not. Said Glalie I’m keeping an eye out for tends to favor Ice Shard and Freeze-Dry a lot. Thinks he’s a big-ass hotshot when he attacks, too.”

He couldn’t help but crack a smirk at that.

Another colder burst of wind shook the cave, and he then realized that they’d just passed the five-foot thick ‘pillars’ that denoted the location of the lowest cave in the place—

Just how had some crazy person gotten lost in the underbelly of the cave, and hopefully not run afoul of that Pokémon that lurked down here?

Before he could say another word, though, the clip-clopping of hooves rang throughout the space. Before he could even yell at the other to get the hell out of the way—

His Glastrier decided to show up, all frigid equine body just emitting a colder sort of frost.

“What the hell are you doing out here?!” he muttered, and never mind if Tam was going to see this first-hand, but reached out to the frozen equine and rubbed his bare fucking hand across the Ice-type’s neck.

If Tam were someone else, he would have found it funny to hear an ice type that favours Freeze-Dry and Ice Shard be called a “hotshot”, but just as it happened before with the irony of a cartographer getting lost, it all just goes right over his head. Needless to say, the Unovan isn’t great with word play.

”Well… That’s good, I guess. Would be troublesome if we found ourselves a freeze-dried cartographer.”

Was that a joke? Maybe, but as per usual, it was spoken with a calm and neutral tone, and it was also almost as if bad foreshadowing for what was about to happen.

Just as Tam began to lower his guard and think that maybe this could go smoothly and they would easily find their lost explorer, the ambient temperature harshly dropped, and with the clip-clopping of hooves, an equine pokémon that looked as if made of ice suddenly approached them.

One that apparently Laurence Anderson was familiar with. So much so that he gave the pokémon’s neck a few pats with his bare hands. That had to hurt, right? Wasn’t it freezing?

”Cool horse.” Literally, but the play on words was no more than a coincidence. Completely and totally unintentional. ”Isn’t that cold?”

At Tam’s words, he couldn’t help but let out a bark of laughter.

“Pun absolutely intended, I take?” he said while running not just one, but both his hands now over the equine’s frozen skin like it was a completely and absolutely normal thing to do.

“What, this?” he continued without blinking, snapping off one of the wayward-sticking icicles off the Glastrier’s mane. “Nope, it’s just like any normal…”

And then, his own brain began yelling at him.

What a way for Tam to find out that his own boss was kind of… a…

Oh, fuck.

“You… you saw that, didn’t you?” he belatedly added a few moments later, before the frozen equine let out a snort and a whinny, before trying to pull at him and take him down a certain way.

“What—what is it?” he asked the Pokémon, who for some reason continued to whinny and bang their hooves on the floor, before pointing their head and trying to pull him along.

“I think they found something down there.”

Okay, how was he going to make this un-awkward now? Him, literally touching a sheet of living ice and not even suffering any signs of frostbite? Yeah…

”Hm?” If Lars had been privy to Tam’s thoughts, at that very moment, he would have heard something akin to a dial-up tone. A few seconds of processing until it finally all clicked, and the Head Ranger’s comment suddenly made sense to him. Cool horse. Right. ”Sure.”

Denying it would have been more bothersome than a simple white lie, plus… it was terribly easy to get distracted from such a simple topic when Lars called to his attention and the frozen equine pokémon whinnied and neighed.

Choosing to leave the fact that somehow his boss seems to be either a little insane or impervious to the cold, the blond steps forward, wandering down the path the Glastrier had come from.

“Normally they just run around here like there’s nothing, but for them to be agitated about something—I guess we’re about to find out.”

The Glastrier continued to whinny and snort quietly, giant hooves clip-clopping along the cold stone floor as Lars followed alongside, one hand absentmindedly running through the frosty, cold skin like it was nothing at all. He thought he saw a few stray icicles here and there growing on the equine’s mane, and proceeded to snap them off without a second thought.

The odd party continued walking in silence for another few minutes, before the equine came to a stop and tilted their head at a certain alcove…

And then, right then and there, a colder wind blew through the area.

“Tam. Go into the alcove, now,” he began after the silence as he stripped down his overcoat before throwing it at the other to catch. “Get this on our missing cartographer, quickly!”

Hoping the other didn’t waste any more time, he stared down at the passage where the wind was coming from—which then made the Glastrier bolt away. Even they weren’t going to face the other so boldly—as only Lars could—

If Tam would notice, there was a pressure building up around the air, and a drop in temperature, but to Lars it was absolutely nothing. Another burst of cold air, before the iceborne mirage themselves appeared, not too far from the apparent ‘end’ of the stretch they were traversing.

‘Really?’ was the first thing he said in his mind. ‘Fucking really?’

‘I don’t know how that human got lost all the way down here!’

‘Did you do that weird-ass Kantonian thing of luring people to their de—’

‘NO! What the hell has that redhead been telling you?!’

‘What? It’s just a tale! The hell are you being so defensive about?!’

There they were, in the fucking flesh and blood—the harbinger of winter, at least in Kantonian legends; the one who lured people to their doom in the snowy mountains…

There are certain undeniable advantages to being someone who doesn’t question most things in life. It often makes things much easier, less complicated, and that’s exactly what Tam has always been about.

Even when his ranger superior tossed him his jacket while deep within an ice cave and told him to go into an alcove.

Someone else would have perhaps asked the same question Tam had asked before: ”Isn’t that cold?”, but this time, he didn’t even bother. All he did was catch the jacket, look in the direction in question, and reply with one single word.

”Sure.”
[break][break]
He didn’t waste any time indeed, and even though Tam may not have been the most knowledgeable about first aid, he did know his way around such things well enough to make sure the cartographer wasn’t in great danger. His tone wasn’t particularly reassuring, mind you, but it was calm, telling the lost man to put the jacket on and that they would get him out of there soon…

It was then that something changed in the cavern.

Pressure built in the air, falling heavy upon them, and the temperature dropped so much that every breath became painful and a struggle. It was… strange, but the reason why soon became clear: there, before Lars, was a huge avian pokémon of azure feathers.

Articuno.
[break][break]
One of the most known about legendary pokémon, meaning it was also one Tam actually knew about.

What was his reaction?

He just shrugged and turned back to look at the cartographer. ”Let me help you up.” Once that was done, he looked at Lars, and his tone was as calm as usual. ”So, I’m guessing you’re one of those avatars, huh?”

He had heard of that when moving to Hoenn, as everyone does.

The clip-clopping noise of hoofsteps fading in the distance signaled that the Glastrier had long since bolted, and now he was left to face the iceborne mirage alone.

Well… not alone alone, but one got the point he was trying to make.

‘I don’t know how that human ended up here!’

‘Really?’

‘I speak the truth! Do I sound like I’m lying?!’

‘Maybe, you’re acting so defensive.’

‘What the hell!’

‘See?’

That quick exchange, and the interruption of Tam’s voice made him turn around—with him just wearing a thin shirt, and having absolutely no reaction to the immense pressure that was more likely than not pressing down on Tam (and their missing person, now found) made him realize he wasn’t alone.

“No hiding it, I suppose,” he admitted quietly, before he turned his gaze again to the mirage and then gave him his best attempt at a withering glare.

“I’m surprised you haven’t turned tail and bolted. Anyone else who gets lost in the depths usually makes a run for it, or so I hear. The pressure around the area is too strong for most anyone to take.”
