There was a feeling of bitter nostalgia in Gwyar's chest as he walked into the stadium that hadn't quite been there when he and Raki participated in the HsT.

As the roar of the crowd washed over him and each step he took brought him closer to competitive battling once again, he breathed in and out slowly, gently, the several rituals he used to go through during the many tournaments in Galar coming back to him.

He grounded himself. As ever, he was not there to fight, nor to win. He was there merely to spectate. And, should the worst happen, to console Raki once more.

Walking besides him, Raki breathed in and out slowly as well, matching his trainer until the reached their end of the battlefield.

Gwyar came to a stop, but Raki kept walking on, leaping into the arena.

With one last, deep breath, the puppy stood completely still for a moment.

Then his paws suddenly came crashing together, arms extended forward towards his opponent as he bowed politely.

"Raki, Third-Class Disciple of Bajiquan, requests for a duel!" Boomed Gwyar from his side of the field, arms folded behind his back.

Then, Raki slowly and smoothly transitioned to a low stance, arms sweeping through the air in broad movements before centering before him.

'Come.'

If the HST is anything to go by, Luka isn't cut out for such competitions. She's too soft for such rigorous battling, and her techniques are basic and unrefined. Despite having made some definite progress since late year, a tournament like this not not normally up her alley.[break][break]

But it's an excellent chance for Helios to stretch his legs and put years of training to use. Though Luka does her best to exercise her father's ace, she knows he's been itching for a true test of his expansive abilities. A tournament like this is the perfect opportunity: all she has to do is step back and allow him to fight to his heart's content.[break][break]

They make for a rather mismatched pair as they approach the stadium floor. Helios, tall and proud, and Luka, timid and fluffy as a wisp of cotton candy. She tries not to cower under the stares of the crowd and their opponents, nor the booming introduction from the other side of the field. Her back remains straight, but her hands fiddle nervously with the hem of her skirt.[break][break]

"Ah, um...we accept?" Her voice is soft and timid, and the Blaziken beside her snorts. "Um, t-that is! Helios and I are honored to be your first opponents of the night!"[break][break]

Despite the poor introduction, Helios bursts into the arena with the finesse and ease of one who's done this a hundred times before. He stands upright and tall, exuding an aura of blazing confidence. The bow, received with a cock of a feathered brow, is returned in a curt nod.[break][break]

With a fiery breath he steadies himself, exhaling an aureole of flame as talons curl into clenched fists.[break][break]

There's no consideration paid to the size or stature of his far smaller opponent. A fight is a fight, and he won't disgrace himself by underestimating any opposition. As Helios charges in to begin the battle, his eyes focus in on the Riolu with a singular goal: aim low.[break][break]

The battle began, with Gwyar falling completely silent. From here on out, it was all on Raki.

The puppy was pressed as his opponent came out swinging, and swinging hard (and low), the puppy's paws sweeping through the air in an attempt at parrying the blows.

He was sent reeling back by a strong strike, paws grinding across the dirt underneath as he bared his teeth with a low growl.

Bringing his paws together, aura gathered between them as he brought both to his side, the Aura Sphere swiftly growing in size to become a beach ball, before the puppy chucked it at the Blaziken with a yip.

Just like her opponent, Luka falls silent. There seems to be a mutual understanding between them- that this is truly a battle of skill between two Pokemon, with their trainers only present as facilitators.[break][break]

Not that Helios needs a cheerleader, but she wants to offer as much support as she can. His successful hits are met with clasped hands and shining eyes- silent, for now, since it seems rude to cheer.[break][break]

Helios faces the aura sphere dead on, with no flashy attempts to evade or avoid. Instead, a powerfully, taloned foot flings out in an attempt to kick the sphere away like a football.[break][break]

Crackling energy shoots back towards its caster, aimed with a deadly precision. But whether it hits or not is irrelevant, for Helios follows his attack with more fancy footwork, dropping low and attempting to sweep Raki's feet from under him with a fiery low sweep.[break][break]

Raki yips in surprise as the opponent kicks back the sphere, his arms pinwheeling through the air in front of him as he lowers his stance to the ground, legs splitting underneath him as he lowers his forehead to the floor.

The aura soars over him, making the fur on the back of his head stand on end as he quickly tries to spring back to his feet- only to take a low kick to the chops as he does stumbling, spittle flying out his maw as his head rockets to the side, his brain jarred inside his little skull.

Vision blurry, the puppy nonetheless can feel the aura around him, his opponent's powerful, brimming energy as bright as a bonfire.

Reflexively, the puppy's paws attempt to clamp around the Blaziken's leg as his own ground themselves, before he tries to swing the opponent into the floor with surprising strength.

"Ah, um...Helios?" A soft voice squeaks tentatively, barely audible over the sound of exchanged blows. "M-maybe you should go a little easier on the poor thing..."[break][break]

Watching Helios whale on the puppy almost feels like bullying. But perhaps she isn't giving the stalwart young pup enough credit— going toe to toe with a much bigger foe is no easy feat.[break][break]

Her Blaziken, likewise, pays her little regard. It would be disrespectful, in the avian's opinion, to treat his opponent with kid gloves. And the pup's fighting spirit is worthy of respect.[break][break]

The attack meant to down him doesn't work out so smoothly. Though Helios is lifted, he catches himself on the floor, bracing with powerful arms until the blow is barely glancing. In this position, he pushes up with his biceps, counteracting Raki's momentum with his own. The Riolu attached to his leg is carried with him as he leaps up, up, up, and then purposefully pivots back down. It's a modified version of a seismic toss, though the intent and purpose is the same: to slam his opponent into the ground with all the strength he can muster.

Luck just wasn't on the puppy's side that day.

His attempt at a counter, well, countered, he found himself flying through the air as the Blaziken leapt high in the sky, still latched onto the rooster's leg.

Wind whipped past swiftly as the earth swiftly approached, promising a punishing smash and crash for the puppy. This was going very not good for Raki.

Losing was bad enough, but losing in the very first round? Gwyar would never let him join on any serious mission.

He couldn't lose- He wouldn't lose.

Raki's eyes shone a glimmering red, the world slowing down as his perception accelerated.

Z-Move

Inner Peace

riolu attains momentary enlightenment, allowing him to parry and return three moves. if a Z-move is parried, the state is ended prematurely.

Raki's own leg suddenly kicked up, ramming his knee behind Blaziken's own as he tucked in and shifted his center of gravity, swinging them around in an attempt at forcing the Blaziken to crash first and eat its own momentum.

EFFECT: The user rolls with advantage, using their highest roll for every column, and gains +10 to that roll for this knock out round.

Topor: 85 or 7 depending on how Knock out rounds work?

Their midair tangle is almost lost to sight as Luka strains to see what's going on. The cheers of the crowd are divided; some rooting for the powerful Helios, others screaming their support for the (quite literal) underdog. Their shouts follow the pair struggling in midair, a fight that comes to an explosive end as the two opponents come crashing back down to earth.[break][break]

It's unclear who hits the ground first. The arena is bathed in a wave of dust from the impact of two souls that fight until the end. Raki's skill must be commended, for Helios does hit the ground, and hard.[break][break]

It's a powerful attack, one that may turn the tides of the entire battle. But will it be enough?[break][break]

The dust clears, slowly but surely. And somehow, the Blaziken's figure still stands. Helios staggers on his feet, but shakes it off. He grunts, clicking his beak, and flexes his muscles with a Bulk Up before preparing for his next attack. This time it's a flurry of kicks, giving the small Riolu no time to relax or celebrate a successful attack. [break][break]

Good luck, bad luck; there was no such thing.

Only absolutely fricking horryingly borderline tragedy luck could be found here.

If the air-counter phased the giant chicken it certainly didn't seem like it, the smokescreen whipped up by the sonorous crash on the field being swept aside by powerful kicks that sent sweeping arcs of fire, sending Raki the tired into a backwards scramble, hands sweeping all around to try and brush aside the attacks.

Gwyar hummed; things weren't looking well. Raki's previous move had been excellent, but it seemed as though the moment of enlightenment had been much too brief to fully turn the tide of battle.

Well, it was do or die. Raki either turned things around now or fell.

Skill, timing, and perhaps a bit of luck. That's what Helios has always considered the ingredients to a successful battle.[break][break]

In this case, all three have been on his side. It's not a brag- he's above such things. Despite the way their battle has played out, he still holds his opponent in high esteem. There is no gloating or cawing when that expert move fails to bring him down; if anything, he respects Raki more for throwing all of his tiny might against a creature of talons and flames.[break][break]

His steady kicks don't relent, accompanied by small bursts of flame to give them a boost in power. Some may be parried, some not. For a moment Luka thinks he's giving his opponent a chance to recover, but that's assuredly not so.[break][break]

The kicks build in intensity until he launches himself into the air, swinging a flaming leg down and around hard. It has all the style and flair of a finishing move...but will it actually land?[break][break]

All of Raki's efforts seemed to be for naught. Whatever he tried turned up ineffective and even the faintest the closet of exchanges was always in his opponent's favor.

He could be depressed about it later, though. For now, he still believed himself to have a chance at this, even if the deck seemed stacked against him by now. He would smash the deck to pieces.

USE YOUR HEAD, screamed a random spectator.

GOOD IDEA!

Raki leapt at his opponent with his head cocked back, head gleaming a magenta glow as he gathered energy unto it and tried to smash the Blaziken in the face.

Helios leans back just as the pup's head comes hurtling towards him. The move is one that reeks of desperation, but it's a solid strategy nonetheless. The Blaziken hadn't seen that coming.[break][break]

The strike lands; a powerful blow from a small opponent. Shaken, but not downed, Helios corrects his stance to keep himself from stumbling back, unwilling to allow yet another opening.[break][break]

Now, he's starting to get annoyed. The battle should have been decided by now. Any admiration for tenacity is replaced instead by the desire to get this over with.[break][break]

Another series of kicks is sent the Riolu's way, faster now, almost impatient. Double, triple- the number doesn't really matter. All that matters is that they land. The pup seems to be on his last legs; Helios can outlast him, surely. All he needs to do is continue to wear him down and deliver the finisher.
