LIKEWISE, fernando does not come as the pokemon’s representative. he sits further in the back, alongside the crowd, as the pokemon’s actual trainer takes up that side of the ring. yes, the pokemon belongs to fernando, licensed and caught by him, but the actual training has been undertaken by hired help.

it’s the same way fernando handles most of his non-personal pokemon. it’s also what sharpens a bulk of the pokemon that reside at the slateport gym.

“you got this, chammy,” the ringside trainer boasts, wiping the sweat off her brow.

the pancham stands as tall as it possibly can, making use of all twenty-four inches, before staring down the scizor with a pantomime jab.

“battle routine set!”

she utters fernando’s catch phrase, the one stipulation he has on their training, right as the bell rings.

“execute!”

and the pancham runs forward, starting off with the basic fundamentals: a quick jab at one of the scizor’s legs.

FERNANDO CONTINUES TO WATCH with waned interest. his specialized SILPH SCOPE sits over his right eye, recording the match and movements of both pokemon. from the way his arms are crossed, his attention is focused more on the recording than the performance of the pokemon themselves.

“chammy!”

there is an urgency in the trainer’s voice that causes the pancham to jump back. it tries to weave through the scizor’s strike as best it can before going back in for a swift kick.

AND SWAT THE PANCHAM AWAY it does. a quick punch is able to hit the pancham at just the right angle and speed to send it backwards, dizzy as it stutters over its own steps. a pivot on the ball of the pancham’s paw brings it back up close as it tries to attack again.

THIS TIME the pancham deftly dodges the pincer as it comes down. the sheer size difference makes navigating in and out much easier for the smaller pokemon. a successful love tap opens up to follow up with a more concentrated punch.

PRECISION IS WHAT DETERMINES a clean blow. this time, the jab connects where it had previously missed. the result? sending the pancham backwards due to the opponent’s superior physical strength.

instead of coming back in, the pancham steadies itself, preparing for a signature move.

ATTACKS CLASH and the end result is damage to both pokemon. by the looks of it, pancham managed to pull off the intensity required for the move. but the scizor lands an equally clean blow with its BULLET PUNCH.
