It’s hot. Even by Hoenn’s “summer in the tropics” standard. The kind of heat that’s dry, that clings to clothes, that’s almost visible in the way it distorts sights when staring at them for too long. The air is stagnant, and even beneath the shade of Route 121’s tallest trees, there’s no escaping from it.

It could be said that passing by the route on his days off has become somewhat part of the banker’s routine, and because it has, Mars knows well that this is not how it’s supposed to be. Something is off about this heat.

When he calls out his Castform, Aeolus, the artificial pokémon immediately takes to its Sunny Form. Harsh sunlight, of course.

But, hadn’t the weather forecast this morning said that the temperatures would be mild? And how is it so dry when the ocean is nearby?

This is definitely odd.

Even the Castform, who supposedly shouldn’t mind changes in weather, ventures closer to the nearest shore, as if lured by the cool waters. With a sigh, Mars follows.

the noon sun, pale and diffuse in early afternoon, stabs his nape, prickles the ledge of his shoulder. his leafeon tips too close to him — pitches like the arc of a rusting pendulum, then catches its footing. fatigue seizes them all, as if they do not know how this strange heat began, nor how they intend to end it.

This heat sinks into his skin like teeth; grips him in an uncharacteristic bout of lethargy that finds him while he takes a respite, standing for a while at the verge of the sea. blades of kelp tease his calves wet as he wanders; water darkens the silk of his pants in the outgoing of this last tide. on its return, jin feels a seeping confusion: white and red, a sudden wash of stark black, and then the collapse — a resonant p l u n k in the briny shallows.

panic seizes his leafeon and grips until its dancing futilely in the damp sands along the shoreline as if in mute search for a sign of rescue.

Everything about this day is unexpected. The extreme heat, unexplainable and unforeseen, is as unwanted as it unwelcome, for it makes every breath be a labour and causes sweat to drip down, marking his shirt. Still, that much Mars knows how to deal with. Just make sure not to overheat.

The sight of someone unconscious at the shore, however, is a much different problem.
[break][break]
The first thought to cross Mars’ mind could be considered grim by some, but it’s the result of his own experiences in life: ”A corpse?” That might be the case, but distressed Leafeon looms close to the body, as if fruitlessly attempting to help, and truth be told, the sight of it reminds him of a similar scene where a Sylveon had done everything it could to protect its fallen master…

The memory causes a sense of unease to rise within him, transporting him back to those days. And, for a few seconds, Mars hesitates.

Then, like the ebb and flow of the waves that continue to crash against the shore – the ocean uncaring for this unknown person’s distress – the feeling is washed away.

By then Aeolus floats over the body with curiosity, and Mars notices the subtle signs of breathing. Good. Not a corpse, then.
[break][break]
”Use Rain Dance, see if you can lower the temperature a bit.” The banker commands, reaching for one of the Luxury Balls clipped to his belt just as he crouches down next to the stranger. From it, a Gardevoir is released. ”Give him a Life Dew,.”

Hopefully, the healing waters that have often helped him will be enough in this situation, but Mars being Mars, of course he starts thinking of all sorts of contingency plans. It would be pretty bad to be caught next to a corpse, after all.

Which, admittedly, also makes him wonder why he didn't just leave this stranger there. It's not his problem, so why is he helping? He has been acting so odd as of late...

"Hey. Are you okay?" The question is asked as water gently rains down on them.
