first suspected aliens, now suspected ghosts. the more paranormal side of hoenn never ended, did it?[break][break]

aries, again, wasn't about to give the suspected hauntings the benefit of the doubt. it was just an abandoned mansion, which meant people were just paranoid about it. and, in all honesty, there was everything that had happened with hoenn in general. all the weird shit had probably made people nervous, which....they couldn't blame, really. it was making aries themselves a bit nervous, too.[break][break]

it felt like they were just all waiting for the next big thing to happen. how long would it be until something happened they couldn't fix?[break][break]

pushing those thoughts to the back of her mind, she pushes the door to the mansion open. it swings open fairly easily, practically on its own, but that's nothing to be concerned about. probably just a combination of a draft and the door itself being broken somehow.

Oh, god. Oh, god, ghosts. Howl has to bite back a yawn. Oooh, ghosts. Scary.

Listen, Howl’s mother had been 100%, grade-A certified, insane. She was a do-or-die narcissist with money problem and a pathological liar, to boot. And her thing was getting rich quick off of other people’s misfortune. So she called herself a Psychic and sold that shit to the greedy masses, and then along came Howl who had a thing for Ghost-types? Like, little baby HoMac attracted those spectral suckers like flies on crap. So, Howl’s mom pumped her toddler full of drugs, slapped them on YouTube, and started raking in those dolla dolla bills, y’all.

It was a wild ride which set up for an even wilder childhood and it had not been fun. Then Rocket had taken over Kanto and things had gone from bad to worse.

Anyway. Here they were, now, an idiot and their Greninja, staring down a haunted house, and trying to face some past demons and realizing that the potential ghosts were the least scary part of what they were walking into. Luckily, though, some other sucker was walking in first, so Howl screwed their courage to the sticking place and followed.

“Did it open all on it’s own?” they ask, announcing their presence long before they’ve approached the green-haired stranger. Their voice takes on a spooky, warbly tone, for effect. “They like to do that. It’s a shtick.” They squeeze the straps of their backpack, hemming.

“Mind if I come in with you?” they ask. “Greater Mauville asked for my… expertise.”

that's aries' second thought, the first being wondering how and why they didn't notice this stranger sneak up on her. any nerves can be brushed off as that, though, and not the chance of any ghosts. it takes her a moment to answer, though, with a scoff (not quite a laugh) at the implied ghost comment.[break][break]

"there's not going to be any ghosts. the most i'm worried about is a rotting floor." because, once again, the place was just abandoned, and something told her it probably wasn't in great shape on the inside.[break][break]

"is there a reason i should mind?" despite seeming completely serious, aries doesn't make any move to stop howl if they do decide to come along. even if she wanted to, she can't exactly stop them, and...if her suspicions about the place maybe not being taken care of are right, she doesn't want to stop the one witness she'd have if she gets hurt.[break][break]

"i hope you know more than i do." just in case, she admits it with a sigh; an unspoken admission that she doesn't actually mind if they go with her. she just hopes she doesn't regret it.

Howl tilted their head in recognition. “Riiight. Of course. No ghosts.” They walked up the steps and pushed past Aries, peering into the foyer beyond. “But you’re right, the rotting structure is the most dangerous. Not to mention the mold.” God, there’d been a lot of mold in their childhood. And asbestos. And shitty, old, electricity.

“I mean, not unless you wanted to hog all of this,” they gestured to the darkness beyond the open door with an exaggerated sweep of their hand, “beautiful glory to yourself.” They flash a grin and step on through, testing the floor further with gentle, leaning steps.

“I, uh,” they pause, thinking. “I probably do. Against my will. And better judgement.” And just to show that they weren’t scared, of the creepy house and its maybe-ghosts or any of the lurking demons of their childhood, they turned their back on the whole thing, reaching out a hand for Aries to shake.

“Howl,” they said, blue eyes bright in the gloom, tone friendly. “Howl McCoy."

the stranger's reaction to her skepticism has aries' brow furrowing in confusion. "what?" she asks, at their words. they aren't actually expecting her to believe in ghosts, are they? the aliens she had dealt with not long enough are enough, and even then a part of her wants to reason that it was something else. [break][break]

they push their way to the foyer without any fear, and she wonders, briefly, if they've done stuff like this before. it would make sense, between what they had said about their expertise and how used to situations like this they seem. they practically confirm it with their comment about the structure and the mold- which, honestly, she's grateful for in her own way.[break][break]

it means at least one of them will know what to look for.[break][break]

if howl glances back, the wrinkle of aries' nose in response to the house being beautiful or glorious is enough of a sign that she doesn't see the same thing they do- even with the sarcasm. it's just creepy to her. despite the fact that she doesn't really want to, though, she follows after them- even with their careful, testing steps, she steps down just as easily behind them, trying not to use her full weight.[break][break]

"huh." this stranger's answer to knowing more is...concerning, honestly, but if they want to talk about it more then aries will let them do it on their own time. even if a part of her is curious to as to what they mean-[break][break]

how quickly they turn catches her off guard, if only for a second, and she hesitates before reaching to shake their hand. "aries. lamore."

“So, you don’t believe in ghosts, huh?” Howl asked, tone conversational, as they turned to press deeper into the house, taking careful footsteps and judging the strength of the floorboards beneath their feet.

One cracks a bit, and they step to the side with a grimace. “Ugh, houses are the worst. Big buildings, like hospitals and factories, are slightly better. Built to last, you know.” As long as you’re careful on the higher floors.

It’s like walking a fine line between their past and their present, allowing the knowledge from a childhood spent suffering in places like this to leak through while trapping all the bad and trauma erstwhile. It felt good.
