The warmth of his hand tugged her lips up into a small smile as she leaned into it, her fingers gently wrapping around his wrists.

When the moment washed away and their hands began to retract, she turned towards the ocean, fixing her gaze onto the waves which kissed the sand.

The question might've seemed unprovoked, a randomly generated thought, but it wasn't. It was far from that.

It the question she fell back on when Theo spoke to her, twisting her career into a futile endeavor. It was the same question the bleated into her ears throughout her sessions with councilman Gabe, who both made her position feel powerful, and yet, not enough, all at once.
