the two officers lead bobby out of the prison. a fist wrapped around each arm. as if she's a wild houndour liable to leap from their grasp and bite the man they're leading her to. as if her diminutive size and the cuffs on her wrists aren't enough to ensure her compliance.

it's smart.

even as she's granted the freedom she's wanted for so long, bobby can't help but want to do something unwise. to snap at the guards to loosen their grip. to get revenge for slights real and imagined by stomping on their toes, or by clasping her own fists together and socking one in the gut. she wonders how far she could get before they'd drag her back.

the thoughts occupy her long enough for them to reach their destination: the end of the long path that leads to the prison doors, where her true escort is waiting.

she can't help but bristle when she sees him. he's looking down on her. he can't help it of course -- he's rather tall -- but he's looking down on her nonetheless. for just a second bobby considers spitting in his face.

"captain silph, sir," one of the guards greets him, tipping her hat with the hand not wrapped around bobby's bicep, "happy to know you're the person they sent for this one."

the other reaches into his pockets and holds out three objects to the man. bobby's hands clench in front of her; would that she could have any of them.

in the officer's palm are the keys to her handcuffs and two pokeballs.

matias nods at the two guards, dismissing them back into the prison.[break][break]

bobby's hands clench a bit tighter as the stranger takes her pokemon in hand. it's infuriating, watching him pocket her partners without a second thought and knowing there's nothing she can do about it. even once there are no longer two guards restraining her.

she vents that anger in shamelessly petulant fashion. the man before her -- 'captain silph' -- asks after her name and she responds by first spitting at the ground. far enough from his boots to plausibly deny aiming for them.

"my bad," bobby says insincerely before looking up to meet silph's eyes, "this place leaves a bad taste in my mouth. gotta clear it out, you know?"

"so i'd prefer to get this shit on the road before it really makes me sick."

her loogie splashes over blades of grass only to slowly drip to the ground, soon to coat dirt with her vicious goo. even if it had landed on his boots, he would not have cared much.[break][break]

the doors to the prison close, leaving them to their own. it's then that matias uses the key to unlock her handcuffs, essentially freeing her.[break][break]

"come on. it's a long walk to hq."

the spit and the blatant disrespect are supposed to be a powerplay. silph is supposed to get angry, or brusque, or at least tell her to watch her tone. instead he seems completely unperturbed; and more than that he undoes bobby's cuffs.

she's left momentarily stunned as she looks at her now unbound wrists.

"uh, okay."

for a moment that dangerous part of her brain tells her to run, but then she remembers: he has her pokemon. dilly and dally are in his fucking pocket. bobby looks up at his face again -- eyes still challenging despite the utter failure of her last bit of defiance.

"will you give me my shit when we get there?"

without giving her a chance to grace him with another smart response, he turns on his heels and starts walking in the direction of the league hq; one of many scattered around hoenn.[break][break]

since it's a long walk, he finds it appropriate to engage in small talk to help pass the time. it would be an awfully awkward journey otherwise.[break][break]

"so why'd you end up in prison again? did you stab someone?"[break][break]

"behave? how about i -- hey!" whatever she's about to say is lost to indignity when silph turns and begins the trek to the local headquarters. his long legs mean the energy for sass has to be devoted to catching up.

"didn't your mom ever teach you not to turn your back on someone talking to you?"

she falls in line beside him with a huff.

his question about her record is met with an incredulous expression. her lips pull back in a sneer and her eyes narrow as she sets her eyes on his jaw (the closest thing to his face she can catch with him facing the other way).

"what kind of stupid fucking question is that? you have my file don't you? 'assault with a dangerous weapon', assault," she sounds almost offended as she speaks, "i'm not dumb enough to risk an attempted murder charge stabbing someone. i just waved the knife around a bit, cuffed him with the handle."

really, she wanted the money out the register -- and that wasn't worth the time you'd get cutting someone.

"i didn't want to have to use it -- and i didn't!"

the response from silph about his mother barely registers, bobby certainly doesn't trip over it. she's not one to feel bad over social faux pas or feel pity for others without reason. dude seems like he's doing just fine all things considered.

"yeah well technically it was inconclusive if the bruises on the dude were definitely the result of a knife instead of my fist so legally i didn't do shit."

she's not the smartest woman in the world, not even fucking close, but she pays attention when her lawyer talks. her lawyer was very confident about this point in particular.

unlike the mom comment, the question after her motive does catch bobby a little off guard. been a while since anyone gave a shit about that. maybe silph still doesn't. maybe he's setting her up for a classic "cool motive, still theft" response. either way it looks like they've still got a way to walk and she's not trying to pass the time in awkward silence.

"that time? rent. needed to pick up dad's slack, and the drug slinging didn't quite get me there by the due date."

"well yeah, i still robbed the dude and threatened to stab him. the difference is if i actually did stab him they probably wouldn't have offered this to me."

bobby huffs through her nose at that. this little program they'd slotted her into had some pretty strict parameters for who was allowed to participate. as far as the law is concerned she's a petty thief who got out of hand, but if she was an "attempted murderer"?

the comment on rent knocks her right out of that heavy train of thought. she barks a laugh before replying.

"with that last name? i bet," her words are equal parts bitter and bemused, "a bit hard to pay it at fourteen when your dad's skipping half his shifts and wasting what he does make."

despite the topic of the conversation, bobby's tone is light. affected towards a cloying sunniness.

"same goes for the other times: rent, utilities, food. i had to make ends meet. every once in a while i got myself something nice, though. a dye job, some new shoes."

she thinks of the former while running fingers absent-mindedly through her now black hair. gonna have to do something about that.

matias has never had to pay rent, really, as most of his life has been spent on military bases and later camps all over kanto. wherever duty required him to be. despite that, it was anything but blessed.[break][break]

bobby can't deny it sounds nice. room and board, three meals a day. it's more than her old "work" promised her consistently. and yet still, what silph has to say makes her a bit anxious.

'as long as you're good'

she sighs.

"i don't know, sounds a bit like bad news waiting to happen," bobby's not sure 'good' is a thing she can be. has ever been fully capable of.

she watches the headquarters loom in the distance. it promises sanctuary. it summons images of prison. in more ways than one bobby imagines it's a bit of both.
