“Motherfucker,” he echoed, looking down at the note, brows furrowed. “I have no fucking clue.” Not that he was really in the know about everything, of course; but hired muscle tended to know each other.

He looked over his shoulder at the hell house.

“This was messy,” he said-- his words were perfectly echoed by the wet slop of dead Sandslash hitting the ground-- “too messy. But I don’t think this was for us, specifically.”

He tucked the note into his pocket and fished in a different one for his cigarettes. Fuck, he needed one.

“If I had to guess,” he said around the paper in his mouth, “I’d say the trap was intended for the police. Maybe they knew they were being watched, but not by who. Why go through all this work to take out two no-name Rocket grunts?” he clicked his lighter and brought the flame up, clicked it shut again.

He ashed his smoke into the wind, exhaling. “But it’s personal, now.”

As to what they do now… he turned to look at the shitty, old cabin.
