She’s tired. She wants to sleep and can’t. So she sits with her toes in the water, chin in hands, fingers pressing into the pockets under her eyes, trying to make peace with the weight of her dark circles. It’s a warm night, lonely, with nothing but the stars and moon for company--

--and Gremlin, who scurries up her back, making her yelp when his claws dig in for purchase. He clambers to the top of her head, heavy, and leaps off to belly flop into the water. Her neck jars with the motion, and the ripples from his impact roll up her thighs to her pajama shorts.

“Thanks, Grem,” she says, rubbing her sore neck, “now it looks like I wet myself.”

Gremlin spits a spout of water into the air and chugs around on his back, teeth glinting in the moonlight.

Gremlin backstrokes right into the Qwilfish, but his skin is so thick he doesn’t even recognize it until he’s done a full lap with the thing embedded in his shoulder.

“Here, Grem.”

Cyg helps him sit up with the added weight, standing in the shallows, the Qwilfish’s tail paddling angrily in the air.

“Let me hel--”

Before she can finish, Gremlin turns and forcibly bodyslams the Qwilfish in the dirt, scraping it off on the pebbles lining the shore; there’s a hilarious wheeze, like air being squeezed out of a balloon, as the thing deflates.

“Well.”

Cyg taps it with a Pokeball.

“That’s one way to do things.”
