still near the edge of dewford town, theo sets up shop by the edge of a small pier that stretches out into the sea. he's dressed like a fisherman, bucket hat and all with a few fishing rods held in place by the floorboards.[break][break]

there's just something about small towns that brews great music. roxie doesn't get it, probably because she's not from a small town, but whenever she comes out to dewford to watch a show it's just some of the sickest stuff.

she's cooling off after catching an afternoon performance -- killing time before the evening one -- when a voice calls out to her.

"ah!" she startles in place before whirling around to see some local uncle fishing on the shore. there's something immediately endearing about the man. such a serious face on a dude in a bucket-hat and waders.

"yeah, hey! anything biting?"

the uncle's display is met with applause that is initially much too loud for fishing. it quickly turns into something quieter when roxie realizes her mistake.

at the offer to join the man she waves her hand dismissively.

"ah, naw man. i'm not really the fishing sort."

but she walks up to stand next to the man regardless. ditches her shoes and socks, rolls up her jeans, and sits down so her feet can rest in the water.

"but a bit of company to pass the time does sound nice."

jk! he can. fishing can be seen as cruel by some, he's heard, and though he understands the points they make, he disagrees with them in the end.[break][break]

even before he casts his line back into the water, a cloyster surfaces, spreading its LIFE DEW across. theo throws it a berry in offering before capturing it with a pokeball.[break][break]

cruelty is a good enough reason as any, but not the one roxie personally settles on.

"it's just kinda slow."

she speaks in a gentle voice to emphasize her next point.

"and you old guys insist on staying so quiet, too. neither of those are really my thing."

it's playful, light, but her distaste for fishing is clear. disparagement is disparagement -- even if you smile and wink while you do it. the snacks, however, are met with genuine excitement.

"these are very much my style, though."

she picks out a bag of chips and gets to munching like she was born for it. the arrival of an ekans only sweetens the deal. she snakes (haha) a hand out to scratch at its head and it winds its way up her arm. when it takes a curious lick at the air around her nostrils she pulls out a pokeball and puts it to its nose.

in the near distance, psyduck's SWIFT SWIM takes it closer and closer as it performs the backstroke, elegant in the way the sun glistens against its yellow skin. it's enough to make theo throw a pokeball at it.[break][break]

no sooner does the ekans vanish into her pokeball than an ariados snaps at the air where it had been. she startles a bit at the hungry pokemon, its fangs actively dripping an ichor that burns when it touches the back of her hand.

"woah there, chill. there's plenty of room in the gang."

she gives the spider a pat on the head it doesn't seem to appreciate as much as the ekans would have, but treats it just the same. pokeball out and . . . boop.

her eyes shift back to the man next to her.

"sixteen," she answers, and then after a moment's pause, "and, like, a couple months."
