Ever since the dome enclosed Hoenn, the marine life haven't quite been the same. Staring out into the distance, brilliant blue fins decorate the coastline, swimming up and down the high tides and waiting for their next meal.[break][break]

"Oh, I remember you little buggers. Almost killed me once, you did." He whistles, "Surely you guys ain't hunting, are you?"[break][break]

He may ask, but he knows better than to expect any answers. And yet, he's obliged to try by any means to understand why they're crowding around these parts beyond the whole 'unable to get out of the region' spiel. And beyond that, he has a duty to the people to try and dissuade these angry sharks from attacking them and their beachgoing pokemon.[break][break]

Sharks. Why did it have to be sharks.

CJ looks out at the queen blue sea, her surface serrated and torn by at least twenty, if not more, jagged, angry fins. Nausea swells in their gut.

Sometimes you grow so close to a person that you start to take on pieces of their identity, their wants, and fears. Jeannie had been deathly afraid of the water and all things in it. They’d been friends for so long that CJ was having trouble remembering if the terror squeezing coldly through their veins had been their terror or Jeannie’s.

Distancing yourself from the death of someone you cared for was always bittersweet, but CJ couldn’t help wishing to sweetly leave this trepidation behind.

They squeeze their eyes shut and try to break it down to basic facts: there are too many Sharpedo here. The dome is causing a hazard, and the wild Pokemon are a hazard to themselves and to humans. CJ’s first and foremost job as a ranger is to protect people and Pokemon. The equation is simple-- but CJ has always been shit at math.

They’re still puzzling over the problem when Kinnick yowls a friendly hello (which sounds like a demon yawning, to be honest) and another voice filters in over the sound of the waves.

“Oh,” CJ breathes, as they realize they aren’t alone here (fear can do that to a person, can isolate them)-- and this stranger seems to be much more focused on their directive, “what-- what are you planning on doing?”

It’s an innocent question, like asking the time of day; certainly not because CJ has no idea what to do next and is looking for an answer. Also certainly not because of this stranger is planning on doing anything untoward to the Sharpedo, CJ would be forced to stop them.

He can recognise that yowl from a mile away. Or rather, he can probably recognise the species to which it belongs to. And so does Skadi inherently, her icy glare thrown towards the Jolteon as she tilts her snout up at him. But before anything happens, a hand is placed right over her eyes, earning a small scoff from the Glaceon as she immediately flicks her head away.[break][break]

"I've been tasked with handling this Sharpedo infestation. In other words, everyone else is off duty and I was the only one they could call on such short notice." He lets out a sigh as he rests a free hand on his neck, cracking it with a quick tilt of his head.[break][break]

"How about you? If you're just here to take a swim, I'd strongly recommend against it!"

Kinnick meets the Glaceon’s eyes with a look that’s all springtime thunderstorms, rampant energy obvious in the reflective basalt of her irises. She senses a challenge, and is ready to rumble--

--then the frozen feline’s trainer interrupts and Kinnick grumbles low in her chest. She, too, averts her gaze, looking out to sea.

“S-same,” CJ says, taking a step toward the stranger. They’re here for the same thing, so there’s a kinship there, whether intentional or not. Plus, it really is just nice to not be all alone staring down the barrel of a gun, if the gun was 64 sharks in a kiddie pool.

“Oh, god, no,” CJ laughs, a nervous trickle of a thing that belies their overall anxiety at the situation, “I’m terrified of sharks. Just standing here makes me want to pee my pants. I’m just-- trying to come up with an idea, I guess.” They tug at their braid, voice lilting up into part sarcasm, part faux-hope. “You wouldn’t happen to have any that you’d mind sharing, would you?”

"That's rough buddy."[break][break]

Still, he shouldn't ignore the question posed, just as much as he shouldn't ignore how Skadi is turning her attention back to Kinnick.[break][break]

"It's rare for them to crowd like this, so there must be something luring them in." His steps turn towards the sea, his eyes drawn to the choppiest parts of the water where the Sharpedos all seem to congregate. His eyes narrow, his lips pursing as he catches the smallest streak of red.[break][break]

"Blood perhaps..."

CJ smiles, shrugging. “It happens.”

It really-- it really doesn’t, though. Nothing like this has ever happened to them before. Never have they ever been forced to solve the problem of sixty-four sharks in, essentially, a swimming pool.

“Everything’s all fucky-wucky with the end of the world,” they add, as though that explains things.

CJ peers after the stranger, their feet moving almost of their own accord. They stay safely back of the sea, squinting into the water to see if they notice anything. They don’t really know what they’re expecting. A corpse? A bucket of blood?

“Maybe from… each other?” CJ offers, because it’s the least macabre thing they can think of and they desperately hope it’s true. “Scuffling and fighting with each other in close quarters?”
