jupiter thinks he may be coughing up water for a solid week after the dunk tank.[break][break]

obviously, he had been expecting to get dunked eventually, but it hadn't stopped him from taking in a mouthful of gross-ass water before he could even really realize what was going on. not to mention his poor hair....all that styling had been for nothing after all. which, yeah, he had also expected, but it was still a hassle to deal with.[break][break]

he had ended up pulling it from the ponytails, the bands on his wrist so he wouldn't lose them in the festivities, and had wandered across the beach to try to recover and maybe find something that didn't involve swallowing as much water.[break][break]

and then he sees it. or thinks he sees it- a flash of pink in the crowd, out of the corner of his eye. it's enough that he falters, just for a second- maybe it's the energy of the festival, or knowing what's in store for hoenn, but he can't help but hope it's her. despite everything that had happened.[break][break]

but it can't be, because she's not in hoenn, and she doesn't hold a monopoly on liking pink, even if it feels like she should sometimes. so he squishes down his hopes, that turmoil of emotion, and moves to go on his way.

orchid is beaming at her previous success with the dunk tank. sure, maybe it’s not the most like her image to be grinning this widely for such a small reason, but hey — she had fun. she was having fun.

…until one glimpse ruins it all. the slightest hint of blue on yellow in someone’s hair, not too far from where she herself is standing. it isn’t styled, sure, but that can also be quickly explained away by the fact that it looks soaking. as does the person it’s attached to.

she so badly wants to explain it away as a trick of the light, as someone with similar hair dye to him — maybe a fan, someone with questionable enough taste in both clothes and music to try to mimic orchid’s ex. but no such luck. orchid can only see jupiter torres themself, in the same damn location as them. she should’ve known better than to think that moving to another entire region would spare her from her ex randomly showing, she guessed. she should’ve known better than to believe that perhaps she would be safe in a region possibly set up for doom-by-meteor.

this is cruel, considering that just moments before she had been having the time of her life and now her heart feels like it might melt into her feet in the worst way possible. leave it to jupiter, her once-love, to ruin a good thing.

tense now, she finds herself falling back into her prescribed persona. untouchable, unattainable, there for what she wanted and nothing more. she wouldn’t let jupiter get to her once more. no, she had already decided she would never be reduced to her post-breakup state again.

they plan to go on their way. they really, really do. but the crowd shifts, just enough that they can catch a better sight of the person in pink, and their heart drops. it's her, in the flesh, or they've inhaled too much water and they're actually dying somewhere. they think both sounds possible at this point.[break][break]

they aren't far from where they had been when they first saw her- the realization had frozen them, and now they think their legs won't move. they don't even know what they should do- part of them wants to get as far away from orchid, and the festivities, now, as possible. another part of them wants to make their way through the crowd, to her, and ask if they can spend hoenn's last few months together.[break][break]

the thought of that hurts, though, because jupiter knows it wouldn't work out the way they wanted it to. if they're trapped on hoenn like everyone else, if they're going to die here, it won't be with orchid and they know it.[break][break]

they linger for a moment longer, unsure, and then make what feels like the second hardest decision in their life. they think orchid probably hasn't seen them, hopes she hasn't; it makes it easier to pretend that they haven't seen her. to pretend that, as they move away from the crowd, away from orchid, that they've just been distracted by some other event.

jupiter recognizes her. there isn’t a single doubt in her damn mind, he had seen her, spotted, her, known it was her. fuck. this is what she gets, she guesses, for branding herself so strongly. pink isn’t the quietest color.[break][break]

jupiter isn’t moving. they’re staying there, staring at her, and orchid can feel their eyes on her, damn it. it’s horrible, it’s excruciating, and it’s all she’s wanted for the past god-knows-how-long since they’ve broken up. [break][break]

she’s tempted to go to him. her secrecy had been ruined anyways, and any chance of her going unnoticed dead. with all the fear in the news recently, she can’t help but want to fall back into what had felt so safe for so long, to run back to jupiter’s arms.[break][break]

god, she was one of those people. the ones who couldn’t stop yearning for their exes even when it’s more than clear that they’re through, over, gone, done with. it’s humiliating, to want this person so badly when she had had them before, and it had gone so horribly south.[break][break]

and yet, she finds herself chasing jupiter when he begins to move away. she tells herself it’s because no one runs from her, damn it. no event here could be more interesting than her. even she knows she’s lying, though, as she feels her heart sink at the possibility of their meeting being so brief, so utterly nothing. [break][break]

there’s no hope left for jupiter that orchid hasn’t already seen her. it clicks in the back of her mind as she moves away that she had been staring for a reason, and that reason was because they both knew the other was in hoenn now. that knowledge makes it harder to keep walking, makes it so tempting to turn around and meet orchid somewhere.[break][break]

the event was big, yes, but surely if she turned back now she’d be able to find her fairly easily. she pauses, then, trying to think of her options. it’s either keep walking and deal with the unknown on her own, or, if she goes back, deal with a new and potentially different type of unknown. she doesn’t even know if orchid wants to talk to her.[break][break]

fuck. she fucking hates this.[break][break]

she gathers her courage, turns around, and-[break][break]

orchid is already there. not close by, but enough that jupiter can’t deny she was being followed. everything she plans to say dies in her throat, and she only manages a simple “orchid.”[break][break]

i missed you, she both wants to say and never admit, but the words won’t come either way. “i didn’t know you were in hoenn.”

at first, she isn’t sure whether jupiter has noticed her nearby. it doesn’t take long for that to change, though, because soon enough jupiter is addressing her. actually speaking to her. [break][break]
it’s jarring, orchid will admit. to suddenly hear the voice she so carefully avoids, except on nights when maybe she’s a little stupidly vulnerable and maybe it gets to her enough that she watches her phone’s old collection of videos. the only time she’d heard it otherwise had been in surprise-attacks, commercials or interviews that get sprung on her while her tv plays. [break][break]
her throat is surprisingly dry as soon as she speaks, and she takes a moment to clear it. she tries to seem unimpressed while doing it, though she isn’t sure how well it works. [break][break]
“i could say the same about you.” she looks him up and down, still in disbelief, trying to disguise it as judgment. [break][break]
“just moved here,” she offers, after a moment. “gotta be the new popstar in town, or whatever. why are you here?” perhaps it’s more hostile than jupiter deserves, and a pang resounds in her chest at talking to jupiter this way. but then she remembers what had happened the last time she’d been even remotely vulnerable with them. she bites back a comment that comes to the tip of her tongue, the desire to ask jupiter if unova had gotten bored of them. [break][break]
she didn’t even believe that could happen. and again, it’d… it was more hostile than jupiter deserves. at least for now. [break]

all of this doesn’t feel real, and jupiter isn’t sure that he likes it. any other time, he thinks he would have laughed about it– being trapped on some doomed region, only to find out his ex was also on the region? it sounded like something out of some horrible drama, something he would have laughed at before he moved.[break][break]

he’s not laughing now, obviously.[break][break]

his mouth feels dry, and he thinks his heart is beating hard enough in his chest that orchid, even with the distance between them, could hear it. already, he’s cursing himself for even stopping, because orchid is clearing her throat, seeming unimpressed, and there’s no way this could have gone the way he wanted, he was a fool to think otherwise–[break][break]

he’s not expecting orchid to ask what he’s doing here, and, even if he was expecting the hostile tone, it still stings. it’s just more of a reminder that he should have kept walking, pretended that he never saw orchid in the first place. “i was just curious about hoenn. saw a lot about it.” his answer feels almost friendly in response– he can’t bring himself to sound too hostile about it, and he’s torn. torn between lying, saying he’s busy, or staying where he is.[break][break]

his body’s refusal to move makes the decision left for him, and he’s left feeling, again, like a deer in the headlights. he hates it, hates whatever greater being would have thought this was funny.
