this was just supposed to be a quick trip to survey damages on the city. to find himself assigned with someone else was less than what kyle finds comfortable, especially with a stranger.

"so, uh, did they force this on you?" he asks.

callista luna moon. immigrant from johto and sergeant of the league, at least it's what was said according to her files. he doesn't know much about her besides that maybe her parents hated her for giving her a name like that.

he's not going to point it out though, since he knows it's probably a sensitive topic if she had to grow up with that name.

"force this?" her brow arches, lips upturned in an amused smile. "no."

[break][break] kyle lopez, champion of hoenn and AQUA committee member. she knew a lot about him and yet nothing at all. a cursory google search had told him all that she had needed - or cared - to know. since she didn't plan on challenging the gyms in hoenn, she figures that they would probably never cross paths.

[break][break] except AskMews hadn't mentioned how he was also apparently an officer.

[break][break] maybe she'd skipped that article.

"you sound like you're trying to get out of this. you have somewhere to be, mr. lopez? i can cover for you — if you have a hot date." she'd seen a snapshot of him looking cozy with noah faber at a ramen shop, though she wasn't sure if that'd been photoshopped. she'd seen something identical with MATIAS SILPH too, but she was pretty sure he was spoken for.

the tone she exerts already tells kyle she's not the type he can get away with joking around with, especially if the jokes he's prepared to fire are half-meant.

"oh, no. definitely not. i'm being a productive member of society today, yup, yup."

as much as he gets along with the people of the local slateport police precinct (mostly because they're stuck with him), it wasn't the case with the other branches of law enforcement.

kyle takes out a phone to take pictures of the perimeter of the crater city for documentation. phones these days were developed to have lenses rivalling older dslr camera models anyways, so it should suffice.

"i was just wondering if, you know, want to be else where. not that i mind you here, though! company is nice, but not when it's forced, yeah."

awkward words come out to defend a statement that doesn't need to be stated in the first place/

[break][break] her head tilts as she watches him take a snapshot of the crater city for documentation. she supposes that she could do so as well, but what's the point when he's already doing all the work? it's why she likes paxton concordas as a boss, because she can often get him to do all the icky paperwork for her.

"plus, i don't have that many friends yet. i mean — other than matias." her gaze twinkles as she looks at him. "you know him too, right?"

an awkward laugh ensues, but it takes the edge off from being alone with a stranger.

he raises a brow at the mention of matias. he sure does come around a lot for someone who talks stern and straight to the point. he'd judge people befriending him if he wasn't considered one of them.

"silph? yeah. pretty much everyone does, i think," he answers. "guy's a menace. you get along with him?"

kyle drops down a ledge and continues to walk across the perimeter of the crater.

[break][break] she laughs then, voice light as it carries through the area. even though MATIAS SILPH was technically her boss, he'd never been as stiff as a board the same way Greyson Connors and paxton concordas were. if anything, he was like a dorky older brother.

kyle finds himself stifling a chuckle at her assessment.

she was right. MATIAS SILPH is just a bunch of hot air. easily read too, which wasn't exactly a bad thing for kyle.

when she asks him a question, kyle finds it a bit uncomfortable to get an answer out. he, nonetheless, gives a response.

"in a way, it's bothersome. i'm basically stuck with it, but it's not like i have any other choice."

he inherited the title out of seniority from what he had guessed. confidence wasn't there yet, though hanging out with other people who have their eyes on it does give him a bit of clarity with the situation.

"what's your take on people who want the title for the sake of having it?"

[break][break] but maybe that's because all she's ever thought of the gym circuit was what she'd seen as a kid. plenty of stuck-up, prep school boys bragging about how they would be the new champion, without even having a breadth of the skill.

[break][break] "not what i'd expected of the great champion," she admitted, before smirking at him. "though - it's kinda cool. makes you more human, if you ask me."

[break][break] she turns towards him at his question, looking surprised, before kicking a pebble down the crater.

[break][break] "stupid! what's the point? fame? glory?" she laughs, though this one sounds more hollow than the others.

the relatable nature of her answer brings the smile on his expression. it's faint, but it's there.

"you get me," he tells her.

it sounds hypocritical to agree on her on that when he wouldn't voluntarily give it up, but he'd argue that he'd rather keep it than have to work with someone who wouldn't stop rubbing it in front of everyone else's faces.

"at best, it's just bragging rights. don't tell anyone, but i'm only down to holding it just so no one else can have it."

his eyes follow the sound of the pebble rolling down, easing himself up after being put on high alert by the unexpected noise, before going back to the path.

"what would you do if you got the title? i'm running out of ideas with it."

kyle doesn't really spend much, nor does he have anything big to spend money on. getting new games without waiting for sales or consoles on release was a pretty nice privilege though.

"oh. i did use it to cut lines once or twice before." it was more than two times. "same thing, right?"

it really wasn't.

the path eventually dips down closer to the ground, but still away from the main city. they'd probably be spotted if they went any closer, but in any case, league officers weren't exactly banned on sootopolis by law.

still, kyle follows a winding path down. they'd still need documentation for the ground, after all.

"say, have you fought big fights with rockets before?" he asks, eyeing the city from afar.

[break][break] "i'm sure there are philanthropic organizations you could donate to." her gaze flicks downwards, to his sneakers. "i'm sure there'd be a lot of orphanages who would love to have pairs of your old sneakers. imagine - being a kid, and being able to say, 'i'm wearing the champion's sneakers!'" her voice pitches higher as she mimics the 10-year old kid who would love to be kyle lopez.

[break][break] her brows disappear into her forehead as the champion leads them down the winding path, probably past where they were allowed to go. well mdash; it wasn't like she was going to argue with him.

what callie suggests strikes a chord. he did come from one. he comes to think about the prospect of it for a noticeable amount of time. he compares himself now to the him before and comes to a conclusion.

he didn't care for shoes when he was a kid anyways, so he'd probably prefer pokeballs or something.

the change of tone prompts him away from the thought of donating to the nearest orphanage. it jolts him awake, as the familiar bite of aggression can be sensed easily under the tone.

"ah. is that why you're here on hoenn? it's a pretty shit place after all."

before it was invaded on, it had nothing special. after the fact, crime was on an all time high. later on, there were even supernatural events and disasters that happened on a bimonthly basis.

"i actually worked on johto before too," he points out, finally finding a topic he can chime in on. "for the blackthorn gym. that city has the same vibes as sootopolis too, and-"

it's then that kyle stops himself from talking. he looks at the city from a distance. people start taking out their pokemon, most notably water-types, to get near them through the little volcanic lake that formed inside the crater.

"ugh. i can't be bothered to deal with those people."

technically, they were still allowed despite rocket taking control of the city, but the local people who support their causes aren't usually the brightest. having a conversation with them just wasn't engaging, or fruitful.

"do you want to just go?" he invites callie. "these photos should be enough to monitor the state of the city, i think."
