Ruby exhaled sharply in something resembling a sardonic laugh at Isaac's sarcasm. "Yeah." But the direction he took next had Ruby's brow raised. She got that each person had lines they were and weren't willing to cross, Rocket or not, but being against one of the organization's largest operations? In retrospect, she wasn't all that surprised. This was Isaac, after all. But that just raised the question that she spoke aloud: "Why are you even in Rocket? You sound more like one of those vigilante types or something."

[break][break]Was it a personal question? Yeah, definitely. But it wasn't like Isaac hadn't already started probing into Ruby's own past. Fair was fair and all that.

[break][break]"Yeah, sure," she said to Isaac's thanks. She found herself unable to meet his eyes for a moment, unused to being thanked like this. It should have felt nice, but it stung like the prick of a needle in her heart. And she knew why when Isaac spoke again.

[break][break]"Oh, don't give me that shit." Energy returned to Ruby's voice, though it was venomous, angry, something she'd grown more used to than the more intimate tone the conversation had taken on before. It drove her to stand up, not wanting her to keep still as it coursed through her. "You think I'd be here if life worked like that? It fucking doesn't. It was either this or—or being left in the fucking dirt." She stopped herself from mentioning her family. What was left of it, anyway. "So don't give me that 'make your own destiny' bullshit."

[attr="class","skullbody"]Why was Isaac even here? That was a question with at least three answers to it, and Ruby didn't exactly need to know any of them. Instead, he simply hushed up and let her work through everything. That last thought of his got her mad. Not the usual mad, either, but genuine vitriol and disgust. He'd hit a nerve?[break][break]

Good. That was proof her dream wasn't as dead as she insisted it was.[break][break]

He let the silence hang in the air between them, giving Ruby the chance to get a good seethe in. And then he started to speak. "I spent the last four years running from the past and hiding from the future. I was basically a burnout with no plans, no resources, no backup, no prospects, nothing. Just whatever odd jobs would get me by and whatever routes were safe enough to camp on. And in the four months I've been with Rocket, I've made bigger strides for myself than I had in all those four years," he said. "Rocket's got the community and stability I've never had before. And, hell, I can't lie. It's nice feeling like I have a purpose."[break][break]

"Sure, I could give it all up to be some vigilante. Try and take on the League in some perfect, pure way where nobody gets hurt and it's all sunshine and rainbows. You know where that'll get me? Locked up, if the League got me first. Dead, if Rocket did. And if I somehow slip everyone's notice, I'm right back at square 1. Nothing to my name but my Pokemon and the open road." He couldn't help but grin wearily as he looked Ruby in the eyes. "It's either this, or get left in the fuckin' dirt."[break][break]

Isaac wasn't an idiot. He knew the wheel gets lubricated with blood either way. But either he could be the one pulling the trigger until the stress of it gnawed a hole in his brain, or he could keep it in the back of his mind while distracting himself by doing "good" in the process. A Grunt was just a tool to Rocket, but proper tool maintenence mattered.[break][break]

"Still. We're fucked for life, but that doesn't mean getting fucked's all there is to it," Isaac said. "Make a disguise. Chase your dreams on the side. God knows you wouldn't be the only one. If anyone gives you weird looks, just say it's more cash for HQ and a safe place for any Grunts on the go to crash. Hell, with the kind of shit we go through? I doubt any of the injured or the traumatized would complain about a therapy service that wouldn't turn you down for being here. Rocket's not gonna fuck up a good thing if it benefits them, right?"[break][break]

"I'm not saying you gotta. But, hey. No harm in coloring outside the lines when no one's looking, y'know?"

At first, Ruby narrowed her eyes at Isaac's refusal to talk when he'd come in here with these probing questions and comments. But then, once he'd let the seething silence hang for a while, he began to speak. Finding community and stability in Rocket? That... That was fucking sad. And probably dangerous, too, given that it was Rocket. The anger ebbed from Ruby's face into a more neutral frown as she listened. Despite his morals, he wasn't a complete idiot. He knew trying to play the hero without bending to the League's will wouldn't end well for him. Her brow creased when he echoed her words right back at her.

[break][break]"Smartass," she mumbled without any real vitriol.

[break][break]There was plenty of sarcasm in her rebuttal, though: "Yeah, sure, lemme just go get certified, start my own business, and put on my customer service smile." She elected not to demonstrate that last part. "And who else besides you is gonna admit to being fucked up and come get help? Nobody wants the Sharpedo to smell their blood."

[break][break]In a world of power-hungry criminals, Ruby had been taught not to show any weakness. If she did, she'd be easy pickings for those with the will to stay on top. Some people got by by keeping their heads down and not stirring the pot. But those people would inevitably be overshadowed by those with ambition and drive and the will to do questionable things. To Ruby, fighting was the only choice she had if she wanted even a sliver of a chance to rebuild her life.

It was funny. Back when he was wandering the region, Isaac was surprisingly taciturn. Without anyone to interact with but the Pokemon by his side, he drifted from town to town in relative silence. Sure, sometimes he chatted with the locals. How else was he going to find odd jobs? But compared to the extensive banter he had with half of the grunts here, those brief, pleasant exchanges were practically silence.[break][break]

Was Isaac's loud mouth a side effect of him finally having someone, anyone in his life to open up to? Or, especially after the shit he'd been through in the past week, was he just asserting himself the one way he knew how? If he breathed, he was defying the death of his body. If he thought, he was defying the death of his will.[break][break]

Would Ruby follow in his footsteps? Or would she just let her dream wither away?[break][break]

At the mention of Ruby's customer service smile, Isaac snickered a little. "God, no," he said. "We're trying to welcome people here, not scare the shit out of 'em. Have mercy on these poor souls and give them the usual death glare." Hey, if she could be sarcastic about her smiles, so could he![break][break]

Her other point was an interesting one. It was true that Rocket tended not to be an organization where you wanted to show weakness. But was hiding it really the answer? "I mean. Do I look very strong to you right now?" Isaac asked. "Having some pink puff floating around my head's not gonna change that. If anything, it'll only make me stronger. Physical injuries, too. If a mission goes bad and you lose an arm, well, you can't exactly just grit your teeth and will your arm back on."[break][break]

"Think of it this way. What's a young, up-and-coming Grunt gonna prefer when this life blows up in his face? Getting kicked to the curb for losing all his value, or swallowing his pride and taking a second chance?"

Ruby probably wouldn't be able to imagine a taciturn Isaac, especially since he still kept up his quips despite his shell-shocked state. As much as she said that his jokester personality annoyed her, part of her was jealous of being able to hold onto that part of himself despite what he'd been through. It'd be a cold day in Hell before she admitted to being jealous of any part of Isaac Merlo, though.

[break][break]Ruby tried to give Isaac the usual death glare, but it was hard when she knew damn well she'd started this. What would her customer service smile even look like? She needed a mirror after this.

[break][break]"You're different," was all Ruby said to Isaac's question about looking strong. She wasn't even totally sure what she meant by that. All she knew was that Isaac had to have something going for him to stick around Rocket. He seemed more like the resourceful type than the tough, intimidating type. Maybe that was it.

[break][break]He was preaching to the choir about how a service Pokémon would make him—and anyone else—stronger. But it was about appearances, and appearing with a service Pokémon just gave people a target to aim at. It was total bullshit, but that's the way it was. For a moment, Ruby's fist clenched. Her heart stirred with a memory of fighting to erase the stigma of service and therapy Pokémon and even disabilities in general. It was still selfish, given that she mostly did it for Jade's benefit, but it was one of the only times she'd fought for something bigger than herself or her family.

[break][break]She had to resist every urge she had to hit something in frustration when the stark contrast between that and where she was now slammed into her.

[break][break]"Assuming they're even given a second chance," Ruby spat bitterly. "And even if they are, that still leaves at least three other problems." Certification, starting a business, and actually being decent at customer service. There were probably other obstacles that Ruby wasn't considering, too.

[attr="class","skullbody"]What did Ruby just say to him? That he's different? For once, it was Isaac's turn to look downright baffled. Did she mean that as an insult? A compliment? Some sort of objective statement? Was she saying he was weaker? Was she saying that he was stronger? Was she saying that the strength her pursued was overall something different? It was the most unclear that the infamously blunt, direct Ruby had ever been. Isaac had no idea how he felt about that.[break][break]

"Aren't we all?" was what Isaac finally settled upon saying. Ruby could read whatever she wanted into that.[break][break]

Ruby didn't seem too optimistic about the idea of grunts getting second chances. She had a point. Whether the League quashing them before they could get back up, or Rocket tossing them to the side when their usefulness expired, a failure of a Grunt didn't always have the brightest prospects for the future. Once you made a name for yourself and proved your worth, you started getting a little bit of wiggle room. But that was hard. Being tossed to the side was easy.[break][break]

Still, they wouldn't just cut their noses to spite their faces, would they? "Get a grunt back in action, and you've earned their loyalty for life. Write him off, and you need to waste time training up another. Cost-benefit seems pretty clear to me," Isaac said. "And I'm sure if a Beast or an Executive ends up biting off more than they can chew, they're gonna want treatment. You're not gonna just turn your back on one of the org's best because some Leaguer fucked their arm up beyond repair, right?"[break][break]

But that was just one angle. Ruby was right. You couldn't just snap your fingers and, boom, business. "Lots of people in Rocket have shell companies and side hustles. If you get approval for the idea, I'm sure you can bring it to one of them for a helping hand," Isaac figured. "A good mentor and some forged papers should at least get you half the way to starting. And the rest?"[break][break]

"The rest's cold, hard effort. And that part's all on you."[break][break]

If Ruby knew what the hell she meant by what she'd said, she would have made it clear, but she was still trying to sort it out, herself. She didn't think he was weak, that was for sure. But his strength was something different, something Ruby didn't know how to identify. His response was surprisingly profound, too. "I guess," Ruby said with a shrug. He wasn't wrong, at least.

[break][break]Ruby's brow furrowed as she thought on Isaac's points. Yeah, it was one thing to toss aside a useless grunt who got cocky and went in way over their head, but it was another thing entirely to throw away someone the organization had already invested a lot of time and resources in. And in turn, that person had invested in Rocket. It was mutually beneficial and all that jazz. But would that really be able to overcome the stigma of disability? Ruby almost laughed at the thought that it could.

[break][break]"Okay, when you put it that way, it almost makes sense," she relented.

[break][break]Her eyebrows jumped up at Isaac's other point about shell companies and side hustles. How the hell had Ruby not thought of that? She literally knew a Rocket who owned her own business; she could just ask her how she did it! Ruby had been so focused on believing that it could never happen that she hadn't even thought of how it actually could.

[break][break]That last sentence had her eyes rolling, though. "Ugh, I told you not to give me that crap. Are we done here? I told you everything you need to know, right?"

Would he, an acquaintance of Ruby's at best, take time away from all of the shit he'd been through just for a plan he had no faith in?[break][break]

Regardless, he could see the shifts in her face. She had gone from disbelief and anger to genuine consideration. Even as she rolled her eyes at him in that typical Ruby way, Isaac knew he had made a difference today. Maybe it would pan out. Maybe it would fizzle. But now, Ruby had something new to fight for. And if Isaac knew anything about Ruby, it was that she could fight when she wanted to.[break][break]

He wanted to say that this was everything. But was it? Was it really? One more idea, one last temptation, tickled at the back of Isaac's mind. "One other problem. But it's a quick one, and I'm not gonna turn it into another big ramble," Isaac said. "My ankle got kinda fucked up a few days ago, too. It should heal up well enough, but, in case it gets worse . . ."[break][break]

Was he doing this? Was he really doing this? No, no. The better question was why it took him so long to do this in the first place.[break][break]

"If you've only got one good leg, what kind of therapy Pokemon could help you there?" Isaac asked. "Like, would I need to worry about mobility aids? Heavy lifting? Complications I didn't even see coming?" Even if he'd never go home again, maybe he could make one final difference. If he could at least do that much . . .

"Yeah, well, we'll see if anyone else thinks it is," Ruby said with a shrug. She still wasn't fully confident that the higher-ups would think like Isaac, but maybe if she brought up his points, they wouldn't completely hate it. Though she wouldn't just be satisfied with that, would she? No, if this was something that could benefit her and Rocket, then why shouldn't she be allowed to do it? Despite her dismissive words, there was a spark in her eyes. Isaac was right: There was some fight in her yet.

[break][break]Isaac apparently needed one last thing. "What?" Ruby asked, eyebrow raised and arms folded.

[break][break]Apparently, it was Isaac's ankle. Ruby instinctively glanced down at his leg. She didn't remember him limping or anything when he came in, but it wasn't like she was paying a ton of attention. Eh, fuck it. She wasn't a doctor; it wasn't her job to diagnose him.

[break][break]"Depends on how bad it gets. If it's just your leg, you can probably just use a cane or something, but a mobility-aid Pokémon's good for if your balance gets really bad or something. Something tall and sturdy enough to lean on, quick enough to catch you if you fall, not too big or it's hard to get around unless you wanna ride on it, stuff like that. There's a lot of choices there. Heavy lifting, Machoke and Machamp are usually good for that, but there's probably other good Fighting-types, too." She paused in her info-dumping and knitted her brow. "But if it gets that bad, I dunno what Rocket's gonna do with you. It'd make field work a bitch." And given that most of their work was field work...

Fighting seemed the most likely candidate, though msybe Ground or even Psychic could help. That all made enough sense, Isaac figured. The criteria seemed pretty broad, but that was okay. Isaac could tackle the research from here.[break][break]

"Still, thanks for the tips. See? Told you your first consulting job'd be a breeze. Look at how much better I'm already doing!" Of course he was. He had a problem to solve now. He had one problem for himself, then another for Elliot. Hell, he had a third for Ruby, too. If he was fiddling with these, he would be too busy to fiddle with the recesses of his mind. That was a good thing.[break][break]

"Anyway, I'm gonna head out. Try and find a Musharna. Even if I don't, that fresh route air might do me so good. Better than being cooped up in this can of sardines," Isaac said. Slowly, the cheeky grin on Isaac's face started to settle into something a touch more genuine. "Thanks for tonight. You sleep well too, okay, Ruby?"[break][break]

And with that, Isaac turned on his heel to leave. If Ruby had any other questions for him, now was the time to ask. If not, he'd disappear just as quickly as he had barged in.
