[attr="class","skullbody"]Isaac practically had to bite his tongue to avoid cracking a joke about it being sandwich artistry, not rocket science. He tried to get Subway jokes spreading among the Grunts a few times now, to decidedly mixed results. But, damnit, this would be his personal choice of hill to die on![break][break]

Maybe the hill dying could wait until later, though. The sun was finally starting to set, and summer nights got real dark, real fast. He gave his pull a single, final tug, eyeing the waters closely to see what last minute catches he'd end up scoring.[break][break]

A Wishiwashi, huh? Not the biggest, not the smallest, but the mass of other Wishiwashi falling away from it as he pulled his rod from the water was always a sight to see. No luck on the sea serpents, or other rarities of the sea, but it was a fun note to end on. "Well, guys. It's been a blast," he said, flashing the sisters a winning smile. "Gonna head home before it's dark. But we should do this again sometime, yeah?" And with that, he was gone.[break][break]

Wait. Wasn't that his fishing rod over there? Oh dear, it seemed Isaac forgot something on his way out!

Surprisingly, Isaac didn't have anything else to say on the matter. Ruby gave him a dubious side-eye, waiting for whatever quip he had brewing up in that head of his, but nothing came. Weird.

[break][break]Ruby, too, noticed the sun starting to dip below the horizon. It'd be time to pack it in soon. There was another tug on her rod; she reeled in whatever she had managed to snag this time.

[break]Another Milotic, and this was a big one! Shame it wasn't Ruby's kind of Pokémon.

[break][break]When Isaac finally spoke again, it was to announce his departure. "Yeah, we should get ready to go, too," Ruby said.

[break][break]"It was nice meeting you," Jade said to Isaac before he left. Ruby gave a noncommittal grunt and wave.

[break][break]The older Garcia was examining her catches when something caught her eye. "Did he seriously leave his rod behind?" You know, the most important thing someone needed to fish? What a dumbass.

[break][break]"Oh, we'll get it back to him," Jade said a bit too eagerly. "Atlas, can you go grab it?"

[break][break]"Wha—Hey, you don't gotta do that. It's his fault he forgot. He can just get another one."

[break][break]But Atlas had already placed the rod in Jade's hands, where she was making sure it was reeled in. "We'll be right back," she said before Atlas began wheeling her toward the departing Isaac.

[break][break]The only thing Ruby could get out was a baffled "Uh—" before she stopped, staring after her sister. What the hell? Why was everyone acting so weird all of a sudden? Her face pinched as she watched.

[break][break]"Excuse me, Isaac!" Jade called. "You forgot this!" As she handed the fishing rod back to him, she lowered her voice: "And, um, I just wanted to thank you for being Ruby's friend. Don't tell her I told you this, but she's been through a lot in the past few years. She may not act like it, but I think she needed a friend like you."

[attr="class","skullbody"]Isaac stopped short as the girl and her Machamp approached. Apparently he'd left his fishing rod behind, and they seemed pretty intent on bringing it back to him. He felt a little guilty about putting them out like that, but the gesture was sweet.[break][break]

"Hey, thanks," he said, only for Jade to approach a little closer and lower her voice. Apparently it was her turn to look out for Ruby, thanking Isaac for going out of his way to be her friend.[break][break]

He wasn't surprised to hear that Ruby had seen some shit. You didn't get that tension and edge to you out of nowhere. However, it was still a little disheartening to hear. She seemed like a good person, deep down. And her goals were some of the noblest Iaaac had ever heard. She didn't deserve all of this.[break][break]

"Always happy to help," Isaac said, swallowing down his worries before Jade can hear them. "She's pretty damn cool, once you get to know her. If anything, here's hoping I'm just the first of many. And if you two ever need anything, I've got your backs, okay?"[break][break]

And with that, Isaac was gone . . . dragging an increasingly stretched out length of fishing wire behind him. Oh no! Had his abandoned rod gotten snagged on one last catch?[break][break]

Jade smiled, partially grateful for Isaac's words and partially amused that he'd stopped censoring himself. "She really is. I hope so, too. Thank you again." She nodded her head in a facsimile of a bow. She heard his line strain against something as he left. Had the hook caught on something? She giggled to herself. He'd notice it soon enough. "Let's go, Atlas."

[break]Back at the water's edge, Ruby had one eye on her approaching sister and the other on a Whiscash that she'd snagged while Jade was gone. "What were you two whispering about?" she asked, her tone suspicious yet not accusatory.

[break][break]"I just warned him to be more careful with his belongings," Jade said easily. "This was just a fishing rod, but if it had been something more valuable, someone might have taken it."

[break][break]Would Isaac leave something worth taking behind? Surely he wasn't that careless. Then again, he'd forgotten a whole-ass fishing pole, so who knew? "Mm. I think the judging's about to start. Wanna see if this big Magikarp can win any prizes?"

[break][break]Jade could hear the power and weight behind said Magikarp as it flopped about on the shore. If there was one bigger, it'd be pretty close. "Of course," she said. "Shame we can't enter Isaac, though."

[break][break]Ruby snickered alongside her sister's giggling. "Nah, he's a shorty."

[break][break]"I don't think you have much room to talk."
