It was exactly 7:01 AM when Calliope walked through the doors of the Slateport Ranger Station. Head held high, she had marched to the front desk and ask very politely (read: intimidated) the worker into allowing her to speak with whoever was in charge. This would happen to be Tam Fawley. It was a real shame for him.

She was directed to a seat. Callie picked up one of the waiting magazines to flip through as she waited. And waited. And waited.
And waited some more.

What was this guy doing? Sleeping?

Tam is not a morning person. He has never been one. However, being Ranger Captain means that his shifts at headquarters usually start early. He had tried to change this, but in the end, it is what it is, and a fight over schedules is too much trouble for him to bother with.

This morning is one when he’s particularly tired. The kind where despite having a cup of coffee right in front of him, he still ends up drifting off into sleep the moment he reclines on his chair. Yes, Calliope’s assumption was right: he has been sleeping.

Nothing about the way he looks would imply as much, though.

The moment he’s woken by a knock on his office’s door, telling him someone is here to see him, he sighs, downing the now lukewarm beverage. Calloused fingers run through blonde hair, and putting on his jacket (featuring a golden captain’s armband), he walks down to the lobby. A Yamper diligently follows at his heels, her steps eager and quick.

”I heard you were looking for me.” Sky blue eyes fix on Calliope Marks, his expression emotionless. A hand is offered for her to shake. ”Tam Fawley, Slateport Captain. How can I help you?”

When Tam Fawley appears, finally, Callie rises to her feet. Shoulders straight, head held high, her single blue eyes cuts sharp into into the man's. Much like the other, she is unimpressed. Scowling. Most who see her thought she was angry or upset.

Callie takes Tam's hand and gives it a firm shake. Respectable.

"Hire me."

Simple and to the point.

Callie opens up her purse and pulls out a manilla folder with all the paperwork already filled out. She had even gotten stamps and approvals for later down the line from those who she could bully into it. The folder is offered to the other.

Expectant.

Some people would probably be intimidated by someone like Calliope Marks. Tam is unfazed, because most things in this world seem utterly incapable of fazing Tam.

”Hire me.” She says.

”Hm.” He replies, as if this were the most appropriate response to that demand. He would ask her why he should hire her, but she passes him a manila folder, and this is taken as her own answer to a question that was never spoken.

Once letting go of her hand, he takes the folder, opens it, and looks at it. Information is calmly read, gathering the most important bits and pieces. A few of the pages are given a glance over. Impressive record, but this is not something he says. He just looks at Calliope once he has read enough.

”Why do you want to be a ranger?”

What? It's not like he would immediately agree.

Callie does not flinch or fidget as she awaits Tam Fawley's reply. Once, she was used to close scrutiny. The public would notice any little tick or weakness. You had to be ice when you were on a pedestal. She just waits.

She blinks, once.

Callie had expected many questions to be asked but not that one in particular. Yet, she just gives a moment of consideration before answering.

"I'm tired of sitting around my house when I know people need help."

Full disclosure, Tam sucks at understanding people. Empathy is not his thing, he can’t relate to the issues of others, and really, he doesn’t even want to. Too much effort, and for what? Nothing good has ever come out of him trying and failing to put himself in another person’s shoes.

However, not wanting to sit around and do nothing? Knowing there’s people they can help? Knowing that the region needs capable rangers?

These are things he can understand, because years as a ranger have taught him to think as much.

Calliope Marks’s response makes sense in his eyes, but most would have. He just wanted to have a vague idea of what kind of ranger he’d be dealing with.

”Alright, then there’s some paperwork I’ll need you to fill out and you can begin your training after that. There’ll be a couple of exams to pass, but you can probably handle it just fine.”

He shrugs, as if nothing. Most people do fine at those. Given her record, she should too.
