Rain covered the city of Mossdeep in a perpetual mist, lingering in a haunting shroud as Talia joined in one of the numerous Ranger and Officer patrols that had been demanded here since the Darkest Day.

Strategically, Mossdeep's proximity to Sootopolis alone put it at risk of stockpile raids. Desperation and aggression were an unfortunate combination, and both had intensified in the local population to an alarming degree.

This warehouse was one of many that had been classified as a high-risk target. This late at night, in weather like this, Talia secretly hoped that no one would bother.

Yet precisely because of those reasons, she suspected there was a higher chance that someone might.

Dressed in her white Ranger's uniform, Talia's allegiance was clear, and her resolute expression was one of professionalism; this was not her first stakeout, and though she was by no means an especially seasoned member of the Rangers, she had lost the nerves that characterised her early missions.

Her Dragonair curled behind her, luminous eyes staring ahead as winged ears stilled with intensity of focus. Overhead, Talia's Noibat flitted about; its own large, velvety ears swiveled to and fro, attuned to the slightest sound.

When the name Silph was invoked in the line-up for this mission, she had naturally assumed it to be the one that she had already met: MATIAS SILPH.

She assumed incorrectly.

FERNANDO IS NO STRANGER TO TRAPS. the invasion of slateport may be forgotten by those new to hoenn’s shores but make no mistake, hoenn is filled with corpses. like rattatas, only the shrewd survive. those that fall for easy bait find themselves struck under vengeful machinations.

it has been a short few years but peace has made careful men weak. feeble.

an unwitting misstep spoils their operation. the hidden stripe of fernando’s kecleon blends in with the red tape of bureaucratic goods. it reads ‘fragile’ but the pokemon proves anything but. the sharp crack of a whip is the last thing an unlucky rocket will hear as their air way in constricted by a lizard’s tongue.

most forget that these pokemon can be adept predators. after tonight, one person shall make no such mistake. they wheeze and gag as they’re dragged to the floor.

the haunting giggles of a mimikyu TAUNT them and their pokemon. there will be no escape. no TELEPORT. no get out of jail free card.

the trap maker is thorough. polished by experience. tempered by previous encounters.

outside the warehouse, fernando’s voice whispers into her ear. his orders carry their decadence, even when she has to hear them second hand. for the ear piece coordinates them should the worst happen.

“that’s our cue.”

Where he had prepared offense, Talia's initial support came in the form of defense.

Her Dragonair's large eyes flashed brightly as she slithered forward, and amidst the water droplets, a curtain of white light descended on her Pokémon and his in a pale SAFEGUARD.

Johto had taught her painful lessons, too: that enemies could come silently and unseen, and that the unprepared fell to them first.

Just as she had fallen, unprepared, to Cillian Quinn on a rainy day much like this one.

Now, that hard-won knowledge was mirrored back in practise as she followed another, more experienced soldier's lead, and embarked on the offensive.

As FERNANDO SILPH whispered into her earpiece, she responded immediately and without question; hers were the agile motions of a dancer, but they found use in maneuvering swiftly and efficiently towards where the Kecleon had the Rockets in their clutches.

The revealing cries of the intruders attracted her Noibat's attention, yellow eyes darting wildly towards the enemy Pokémon with the howl of a HURRICANE. Ensnared by the TAUNT of the Mimikyu, there was no reprieve to be had from the searing accuracy of the squalls and tempests: each beat of the bat-like Pokémon's wings resulted in a devastating blow of spiralling winds and rainwater.

Water soaked the interior of the warehouse, the collateral damage of her actions the first thing she saw before her eyes focused in on those present from the doorway before she cautiously slipped inside.

"Ready," she murmured into the earpiece, her knuckles white as she gripped another Pokeball in preparation.

Dragonair uses SAFEGUARD.
Noibat uses HURRICANE.
It is RAINING.

“BATTLE ROUTINE SET.”

a scuffle is small. a few pokemon and people, littered like insignificant insects. they squabble over food or territory, jaw clenched and stingers poised. a spectacle to watch but far from noteworthy. it is when numbers are included and the chaos unfolds that passerby stare and marvel.

“execute!”

fernando’s entrance into the warehouse is flashy and bright. lightning sparks from his zeraora’s coat and paws, PLASMA FISTS catapulting it forward in a long drawn sprint. a compromise of his position but an inadvertent SPOTLIGHT that diverts attention away from his partner and other pokemon.

brought into a frenzy, their opponents bring out their pokemon as well. some look to win, others look to flee, but all will fight. no one surrenders.

i'll chase the light of that distant star

A searing brightness heralded the arrival of mythical Pokémon and human alike; Talia recognized Zeraora by legend, but had never witnessed the feline creature in the flesh. Motes of blinding light dazzled forth from its flying PLASMA FISTS, the entire room seeming to come alive with the hum of electricity.

Sparks danced from puddle to puddle of water in ceaseless arcs, mirroring the violent, breathtaking spectacle before her. The Ranger didn't dare move from the doorway, for fear of being a casualty herself.

When Talia's Noibat bared SUPER FANGs towards the foes distracted by SPOTLIGHT, the lightning invoked by PLASMA FISTS in this place gleamed in the bat's wicked smile. The crunching and gnashing of fangs crackled like thunder, sizzling with the sharp hiss of newfound static.

In this artificial storm that had brewed in the warehouse's interior, the serpentine form of her Dragonair slithered towards Talia's partner, seeking to return the trainer's earlier favor. The next Pokémon to dare to face the man would face a targeted THUNDER WAVE, the glare of the dragon's large eyes arresting them in place.

At this distance, Talia couldn't see the man working alongside her for who he was.
