A serious eevee? He nearly laughed at that, but remained quiet and passive, not wanting to scare the poor terrorized creature. It was obvious she enjoyed being around Juno, so it just seemed better to keep the two together, but he was not going to object to the gift. Levy nodded at that, with a little smile. "Okay, I'll take care of her, I promise." It made a warm funny feeling twist up in his gut. Wren had thought of him for this task. He believed in him, even if Levy didn't believe in himself.

"Minerva, I like it." Juno and Minerva, it was cute. "Can nickname her Minnie." He was not very good at names so he laughed at this one, thinking it was pretty dumb. Levy could feel that there was still something between them. It was a strange, confusing tension that made Levy admittedly a little scared. Wren didn't make a habit of being somber or tense. Though he had a habit of mixed feelings and confusing signals that had taken years for Levy to read.

"Don't want me to hate you? Wren, what are you talking about — I could never hate you." His brow furrowed in confusion at that. Once again Wren's attention fell away, babbling under whatever pressure what currently building up in him. "Wren, please... just tell me. You're kinda scaring me here." Was it really that bad? Was the eevee a distraction to hide something horrible? Levy could feel his gut twist up further, on the brim of dropping entirely. It made him feel a little sick.

“I know you will!” The smile that settled on his face was short-lived given his anxieties, but still a bright one. “I think Minnie is perfect. And I’m pretty sure she’ll respond to it. Maybe more than she responds to me.” He spoke light and fast, rapidly realizing he was running out of leg room to continue putting off his other news.[break][break]

Wren fidgeted in his seat, staring down at his half-finished piece of cake. “Um..yeah, okay. If you say so.” He didn’t sound all that confident in it, and really, somewhere in the back of his mind he knew that he was probably making it all out to be way bigger than it actually was. But it still felt like the worst sort of thing to do. Maybe because the thought of being apart from Levy intimidated Wren just as much.[break][break]

You’re kinda scaring me here.[break][break]

That seemed to snap Wren out of his concentrated silence, wide eyes snapping back up to Levy, though there was still a crease between his brows. “I’m sorry! I’m not trying to be scary. I just–” His toes scuffed at the floor under the table as he tried and failed to get a hold of his antsiness. “Well, I thought that when I signed up for the ranger cadet program, they’d pick my placement based on where I already was. So, Slateport…orrr, or like, Mauville, right? Somewhere commutable.”[break][break]

He sucked in a big breath, and then let it all fall out in an equally as big exhale. “But they based it on interest and predicted compatibility, and so I’m being sent…to Ever Grande. For my training.” He drooped then, shoulders sagging and head lowering like a sad puppy. Eyes falling away because he wasn’t too sure he wanted to see Levy’s initial reaction.

Levy’s response timing was off. Maybe because he was still slogging through a hundred possibilities of what Wren was going to say that when he finally came out and said it, he didn’t immediately react. He didn’t even really fathom what he was saying at first so only managed a little. “Oh.” Ever Grande. That was a long way away, wasn’t it?

Truly, he wasn’t sure if it was better or worse than the possibilities running rampant seconds before the truth broke. Maybe it was a good thing to have that time to think of things far worse than simply that Wren was fulfilling his dream. It was just… the distance part that was a little hard to swallow. Was Wren expecting him to be mad? Was he thinking he’d be angry and confused and demand he stay closer to him?

Part of Levy wanted to be selfish, to complain and ask that the other request transfer to a closer location. However, he couldn't do that. He couldn’t be that friend. After all, Wren didn’t owe him anything. Levy owed him. For years of support, what else could he do but support him?

Distance dissolved friendships, he knew that even if he didn’t have the quantity of friends to count for experience. He’d seen it before with close friends after highschool. This would be no different, would it? I’ll keep in touch, that’s what they always say. Wren would make friends, he was so natural at that. He’d meet people with interests more like his own. Maybe even someone that was more than a friend, which Levy didn’t even want to think about.

“That’s it? You scared me there for a second. You’re doing what you always wanted. I’m proud of you, really… Sure, I guess… it’s kinda far away, but that’s not forever. I’m happy for you, Wren.” He wasn’t lying, entirely. He was happy for him. What kind of person would he be if he couldn’t be happy for his best friend? A horrible person, that’s what. Hoarding his feelings was a skill he’d perfected over years. Maybe this too would pass? He could be upset about it on his own, not right then.

For a beat, Levy just…stared. Wren could feel his anxiety flare, the itchy feeling crawling up his throat to start making explanations, or finding ways to alleviate the inevitable upset that he was sure was about to come his way. Of course, Levy being Levy, did not lose his cool on Wren.[break][break]

Wren’s brows knitted together. “Yeah? What else would it possibly be?” Wren never once considered doing something like parting ways from Levy on a permanent basis. It was a notion that had never crossed his mind, so the response he was given confused him. Because he genuinely didn’t know what Levy could be insinuating. Though Levy’s response had been delayed, and Wren still felt guilty, the slowly positive response began to make him perk up again.[break][break]

“R-really? You are? Good! I’m so relieved,” he said as he heaved a sigh, and then his smile was returning. Bright and excited as it ever was, though maybe a bit softer. Just because it was Levy. Only Levy.[break][break]

“I’ll still come home for holidays and things, and I’m gonna take some classes online—my advisor already told me that would be okay. Oh, but you gotta come visit once I get settled in an apartment there. It wouldn’t feel right if you didn’t.” Wren babbled on, unconsciously reaching for Levy’s hands across the table again, obviously pleased that Levy wasn’t upset or mad with him for waiting to tell him as he sorted everything out.[break][break]

He sighed again, head tilting a bit as a more somber through lifted back to the surface. All bittersweet and achy. “I’m gonna miss you, though.” His bottom lip poked out, but it was no less genuine. Ever since they were kids they’d been attached at the hip. And now Wren didn’t really know how to grapple with the idea of living so far apart, especially when Levy had always been right there.
