If they took stock of everything, maybe someone from the league’s science division would be better prepared to come along on a later visit.

Wren frowned, watching as Shalin seemed to grow more burdened from the swelter. He was sure that he probably looked just as worse off. It was a cloying, oppressive sort of heat that made breathing progressively more difficult. Already, he felt like he couldn’t wait to get back to a closed, indoor room with a functional AC unit. Yikes.

“You okay?” he asked regardless, brows knit in obvious concern for his companion. Even then, though, his head was nodding in agreement. “I think you’re right. I don’t know what I was expecting, but it definitely wasn’t this.” He defaulted to her judgment, even if he was the commanding officer. As they wheeled around to make their way back, he managed to crack a grin, “Good discernment, by the way! Shows good leadership—that’ll take you far. I’m sure of it!”

But for now, getting somewhere cooler so that they could regroup was the chief priority!

He made note of it all, jotting those findings into a datapad he’d carried along with him. “You definitely don’t see that everyday,” he replied as they circumnavigated the apparent wasteland in a wide arc. “What d’you reckon caused it?”

The longer they flew the hotter the air seemed to swelter. He noticed it before Shalin actually said something. The heat clung to his clothes, sinking into his skin in a way that felt damp and uncomfortable. So too did the metallic body of the skarmory heat, forcing Wren to avoid touching the long slope of its neck—even with gloved hands. “I’m good,” he called back regardless, but there was a wince in his smile. “This is something else, though…”

Sweat-licked hair hung in his face, and Wren pushed a hand through it to force it out of his face. His smile shifted into a small frown as he tried to scan for the source. “Do you think it’s coming from those biomes you pointed out?” It certainly seemed to be the case, growing hotter and more arid the closer they drew—even from the air.

Another day, another moment to sneak away from the incessant buzz of the ranger base in Petalburg. He used to enjoy the constant movement, and always having something to do. Recently, though, it felt like more of a burden. It was strange, not really knowing what was going on in his own head. So the moment he had the chance to step out, Wren seized it. The safari zone was quiet—the sort of self-soothing in untouched nature that he needed.

“Probably should start heading back soon,” he chirps to his leafeon. It’s time to go back to work, unfortunately. Much as Wren would like to stay right there in the safari zone and hide out. But before they go completely…he spied a ralts trailing from a distance. One last catch! Spurring Juno forward, she darts toward the littler Pokémon—wrapping it up in a LEAF STORM until it doesn’t quite know which direction to flee.[break][break]

But even if it’s just Elijah looking into it, Wren could work with that.[break][break]
“Huh?” His head whips to Elijah, not expecting the shift in topic. “What’s that got to do with anything?”[break][break]
Wren chews his lip, “I dunno. I don’t think I’m always as nice as people think I am.” He just keeps it all locked up tight. Too willing to placate most situations rather than act on his own frustrations or selfishness.[break][break]
In his mind, this isn’t exactly kindness, so much as being a push over. It’s a newer perspective. Something he didn’t fully realize until he rose to captain and accommodation became a more frequent bedfellow.[break][break]
Or at least a more obvious one.[break][break]
And beyond that…isn’t a matter of ego, too? It feels good to be viewed as the good and compassionate one.[break][break]
Maybe that’s not so good or compassionate at all.[break][break]
“You’re right, though. It doesn’t feel like enough people care.” The ecosystem is literally dying around them, and for what? For power squabbles to take precedence?

If she was running behind, Wren didn’t really keep close note of it. It was nice enough to be out in the warm sun—the blaze not as intense as it had been earlier in the summer. Autumn was well on its way, and it reflected in the balmy heat that didn’t leave him fanning himself or desperately wishing he’d packed more than just the water bottle he had along with him. Around the area, the foliage hummed with the quiet life of wild pokemon, but he left them be for the time being. It might serve him to catch some to add to his numbers, but he could get to that in due time.[break][break]
When the young woman showed up, Wren managed a smile. Not as sunny as it normally might’ve been, tired at the edges. But warm and friendly none the less. His hand lifted in a lazy wave. From the ground, Juno’s ears twitched as she noted the new presence, leaflet tail swishing in similar greeting, though her eyes didn’t blink open just yet. “It’s no issue. It’s been nice just enjoying the weather. Cadet Conway? Nice t’meetcha.”[break][break]
The leafeon’s eyes finally slivered open at the presence of the curious magneton. Her nose twitched, head craning on her neck to give the metal creature a curious sniff. Wren’s head, meanwhile, nodded at the continued introduction. “Gwendolyn,” he echoed with a second nod. “You can call me Wren, by the way. No need for formality today.” He grinned, nose wrinkling. “And it’s no problem. It’s nice for me to get out of my office too. This is a good area for that. Shouldn’t be too much trouble out here - if at all.”

[attr="class","sam-banner-up-blurb"]It was almost a little dizzying just watching Shalin at it. “You’re way more experimental than I could ever be,” he remarked with a short laugh. It seemed like whenever he encountered the other ranger, she was testing some limit or duration of capacity. Wren could barely handle more than one roller coaster at a theme park in a row—how in the world did she manage, sygna suit or not?

Soon enough, though, they were turning to the task at hand.

“Thanks!” His hand stretched ahead of him to give the skarmory a pat on its long, plated neck. “I don’t have many flying companions—I should really go on the hunt for more. But this one’s never given me an issue or need to go looking!” The skarmory was a sturdy companion, durable and steady in the air. A good thing for Wren, who was more accustomed to riding mounts from the safety of the ground. “Kinda unexpectedly calm for a skarmory.” Their snapping bites were no joke. His eyes scanned the expanse around them. It certainly didn’t look ideal for living, so she must’ve been right about that. “Yeah, still good to keep in mind!” he chirped back. “Even if things look calm on the surface, there’s no guarantee it’ll stay that way.”

Situated in the saddle, he looked over at Shalin. “No time like the present, then!” That said he was prompting his skarmory to kick off, and they lifted into the air, twisting in the direction she had indicated going. “We should look for some good landmarks, yes?”

"Awesome!" The safari ball clicked shut, the clasp growing bright green as Wren and Juno approached from their hiding spot. He stepped around a pinchurin minding its business and carried on, stooping to pick up the ball now containing the growlithe. He turned it around between his hands. "We lucked out on that one."[break][break]

Cramorant secured, the pair continued on. Just off the path ahead, he spotted a growlithe snuffling around in the bushes. Probably for something to hunt down. Immediately, the fire-type reminded him of his run on Josh Devlin’s Braver months and months ago. His hand went out, quietly signaling to Juno not to go on the offensive. They’d try stealth with this one. Creeping up as quietly as possible, Wren took careful aim and then threw a safari ball at the canine’s unassuming back.[break][break]

[attr="class","body"] He was feeling more and more exhausted as of late. The duties of a captain hung heavy on narrow shoulders. Often, he wondered if he was necessarily fit for this. No matter how much he cared about the state of the environment around them, or the Pokémon that inhabited it, he seemed to come up short. There was always something else to do, and there were many more aspects of the job that felt less involved with the outdoors and more focused on delegation and local bureaucracy.[break][break]

so any chance he could manage to slip away from his desk at the Petalburg HQ was one he’d seize upon like his life depended on it. And there was just…something fond about patrolling with the rookies and new recruits that found their way into their numbers.[break][break]

This will be good, he told himself as he waited by the route sign for 104. Juno sprawled in the grass by his feet—the leafeon content to sun herself as long as she could while they waited for the new recruit. Gwendolyn, if he was remembering the name on the memo properly. This’ll be just as good for me as it is experience for her. she reemphasized it in his mind like a mantra.[break][break]

Like an encouragement. Like when he’d been fresh out the gate and eager and enthusiastic, and all the things he was struggling to conjure these days. Just to himself, though, of course. No one else need know he was anything but his typical, sunny self.
