“Oh! Look, Juno! Cherubi— go get it for me?” He pointed at the little berry Pokémon. The polite ask is replied to with a tip from the leafeon before she sprints toward it. She BITES down, dragging it back to Wren proudly as if it were no more than a squeaky ball. One she’s momentarily reluctant to let go of before he collects it in a safari ball.[break][break]

It'd been some time since Wren had last made it out to the safari zone. Between the blight and the rest of his head ranger duties, time had been stretched thin. He'd thought about asking Levy Alinsky to join him on the little outing, but when he'd left that morning, Levy had still been sound asleep. There were dark circles under his partner's eyes, and he couldn't bring himself to disturb him. He'd been working just as hard, after all.[break][break]

So today it was him and Juno! A little partner pokemon bonding time never hurt anyone.[break][break]

Shalin Nariya

[attr="class","sam-banner-up-blurb"]He could sense the worry that rolled off the greninja next to him. As they watched, his hand lifted to give the amphibian a reassuring pat-pat. Surely she knew what she was doing, even if this was a new experiment. Any trepidation Wren might’ve felt, he kept to himself lest he worry her pokemon further.

Yeah, there was no way he was about to try this. Even if he had a suit and coupled with years of companionship with Sprout…being yanked around by her vines was far from a fun time. At least in his opinion. Shalin, on the other hand, was very clearly having a great time. He didn’t know how she did it! Wren watched the blur of her figure as she clung to the end of the vine, doing her utmost to hang on before the second powerful CRACK. The venusaur, though still lashing the vines with strength and vigor, avoided going all out.

Which was probably kinda good considering that the VINE WHIP angled vertically was naturally stronger than it was horizontally. He wondered if she was experiencing it all in a strange, surreal sort of slow motion. Because to him, it was all in the space of a few blinks. One second, she was there, perched on the edge of the vine. And in the next, she was being shot up into the air as her hold finally fell through.

Wren’s jaw dropped, head tilting back as she rocketed upward. “Woah…” Soon her flygon was a blur as she too took the air in order to catch her trainer. A disbelieving laugh slipped free, and his head shook side to side slowly as his glance moved from Keimi, over to Sprout. “Think you gave her a trip to remember, that’s for sure.”

From there, it was just a matter of waiting for the synced pair to come back down. A grin split across Wren’s face to mirror hers once it was realized that she was a-okay, and the next thing he knew he had burst into a round of applause.

[attr="class","star2"] “I don’t disagree.” His frown deepens, voice layered with a somberness that doesn’t necessarily match his bright personality. For someone so optimistic and willing to see the best in just about anyone, referring to something as an abomination is no small thing.[break][break]

But whatever this is only seems to destroy. There have been no hints of green under the rot. A failure to persist for even the toughest strains of flora.[break][break]

Instead, the world around them remains muted and sickly brown. His gogoat doesn’t even attempt to bend and root at the ground for anything. As if he knows better than to try.[break][break]

“I would assume that more investigations will be made in order to address this,” he answers honestly, “along with whatever restorative measures might be taken up. Just to see if anything will work.”[break][break]

A mild grin tries to return to his face as his glance turns sideways. “Too many people regard these woods highly to let it be ignored. I love them too much for that.”[break][break]

Most of his life has been spent tied up with this city and these woods. His head tilts, “What about, uh, your end?”

Wren, in all honesty, felt just as gangly and awkward as Levy. He was just great at masking it behind his optimism. Sure, he did believe that improvement would come, but there had been a lot of frustrating days mixed in with the satisfying ones. He didn’t broach the topic of what Levy did at work. It was far more preferable to just come home to him. That was all he wanted to do, anyway.[break][break]

“Oh, yeah. It’s meeee,” he replied with a tired sigh. He was reluctant to rise and move away–instead he seemed to hunker down that much more in rebellion. He was probably squashing Levy, but he was comfy there. The mention of baking did make him perk, though. Just enough to tilt his head to look up at him. “Baking what?”[break][break]

Something good? Probably something good. Wren couldn’t bake for beans, so whatever it was was sure to be enjoyed by him. He withdrew his arms for a moment, letting them stretch up over his head as he yawned again. Then they looped around the other’s middle again. He propped his chin on Levy’s shoulder and pressed a kiss against his cheek. “I dunno, it sucks and it’s overrated.”[break][break]

Okay, so he didn’t hate his job, but it was exhausting. Most days he felt dead on his feet. Today had been a bit of a bummer, though. Enough for him to be on edge until he left. “I wanna go back to cutting classes with you,” he grumbled.

[attr="class","sam-banner-up-blurb"] Wren shrugged, his smile matching hers. “Yeah, seats can be like that, but your experience should speak to your capability!” Though he didn’t say it out loud, the thought passed through his mind– if he could squeak by and manage to take up a seat in Petalburg, then she was by far more than prepared to do the same!

The conversation fell away, and he could only watch with an amazed sort of wonder as she scooted to the very edge of the vine before Sprout lifted them into the air. “You’re braver than me!” he called back with a laugh as his venusaur took it easy on her for the first stages of the VINE WHIP. Once she seemed to have her bearings, Sprout knew it was time to kick things into gear.

Though he was far from reach, Wren stumbled back a few paces as the snap of Sprout’s vines sent Shalin careening this way and that. “Wow!” he blurted, looking between the blur that was the other ranger, and Keimi. “I don’t know how she holds on,” he remarked to the greninja with a laugh. Looking over, he noticed the flygon beginning to glow a bit as well. Huh, so that’s how they connected. It was interesting to see the correlation manifest–even if he hardly knew how it really worked.

It wasn’t long before his attention darted back to Shalin as Sprout let out another rumble. Clearly, the venusaur was enjoying the fact that she was giving the young woman a ride to remember. She shook the flower on her back again, the twist and yank of her vines slowing before she geared up to whip them around again. That time the heavy vines snapped vertically in arching ripples like visible, emerald green sound waves.

“Hang on!” Wren shouted, hands cupping around his mouth. Though he had no idea if she could really hear him.

[attr="class","sam-banner-up-blurb"] Gold eyes widened at the description his fellow ranger provided. “Yeah! That sounds incredible, really.” It was definitely worth looking into, he decided. Whether or not he got whipped around at wild speeds like she did.

“That sounds right up your alley! I’m sure it’d be good to have someone spearheading that endeavor– or at least furthering any exploration already in progress.” Wren was admittedly a bit of a homebody. It made sense for him to return back to Petalburg, and do the bulk of his work there–even if he still enjoyed helping out and traveling to different locations to lend his hands to different causes. But everyone had their own different strong suits, and this one was definitely Shalin’s. “That’d be pretty incredible! And I mean, probably not impossible. There’s still so much for other legendaries hiding out that we haven’t even heard tell of as being in the region yet.”

It’d be pretty fantastical, when Wren thought about it. He hadn’t encountered any himself beyond, perhaps, a short glimpse at Littleroot of something apart from Dialga. But that was something that he wasn’t sure had been real, or a trick of the imagination.

Talk turned toward his venusaur and his brows rose at the suggestion that Shalin put forward. He looked back toward Sprout. “Whatcha think? Wanna help her out?” The venusaur rumbled her agreement, thick vines lowering to the ground in offering for Shalin to climb on. Wren, meanwhile, stepped to the side and out of the way for whatever transpired next. He looked over at Keimi with a grin. “Think she’ll manage to hold on?” he asked the amphibian before he nodded at Sprout to let loose the quick snap of a succession of VINE WHIPS.

[attr="class","sam-banner-up-blurb"] Eyeing the suit curiously, he nodded along with her words. “So, it’s like, that much more unifying, huh?” Wren mused aloud, humming as he rubbed his chin. Maybe he’d have to look into having one made–if it could assist with his job. Probably cost a pretty penny, though. “I can imagine! It definitely doesn’t seem like it’s for the faint of heart.” A laugh followed his response. Sadly, he was definitely probably nowhere near as able to hold his own at speeds like that. Suit or no suit!

Wren perked up at the news she was finally able to deliver. “Oh yeah? That’s great to hear!” His hand raised in the offering of a high five. “You’re bound to knock it out of the park, really. If I can lend any further recommendation on your behalf, let me know!” He’d be happy to, really. And it’d be nice to have some more friends as fellow captains. Though most of the rangers naturally worked together with little issue, he found it much easier to strike a pleasant and easy balance when working with those he got along well with.

Not that Wren was all too difficult to befriend in the first place, but still. He knew Shalin would be plenty qualified to fill the position.

“Isn’t she though?” Wren agreed enthusiastically. He leaned backward, tipping enough that he might tumble if he wasn’t caught–but a long term trust in the venusaur informed him that he’d be caught. Sure enough, he could feel her wide, flat forehead push against his back–guiding him to level footing again. “It’s hard to imagine she’s the same tiny bulbasaur I got years ago.”

She’d been sooooo small and cute! A holiday gift from his family, just like Juno had been. One of his very first pokemon as a teenager.

As if to demonstrate Shalin’s suggestion, Sprout paraded the sweep of her vines as they shot out from the base of the massive golden flower on her back. They waved at the woman as the venusaur let out another loud chuff of pleased sound.

[attr="class","star2"] Wren lets his head loll to one side in pronounced thought, the vibration of a pitched hum rumbling in the back of his throat. Gold eyes lift to the foliage up above them that the sun only barely peeks through as it dapples the path they follow in the shape of curled leaves. [break][break]

“Well, I suppose I say divine in the sense that most people associate it with–pokemon with capabilities that outreach us, so divinity is affixed to it.” A slight grin twists the corners of his mouth. “The end times of the most devout zealot.”[break][break]

Wren isn’t a zealot, of course. He wouldn’t even claim to be all that religious in how he views the symbolic importance or prevalence of legendaries.[break]break]

“My point is–maybe a salandit couldn’t do this. But something else?” His fingers lift from the gogoat’s reins to wiggle in a spookish way. “A harbinger of your end times.”[break][break]

But perhaps that is simply just a way to explain the unexplainable.

[attr="class","sam-banner-up-blurb"]He had to admit—Shalin’s base was pretty dang cool. Wren had grown up playing in Petalburg Woods, and he’d never thought to set up a base as cool as this one. His own had been tiny; a child’s playhouse more than an actually sustainable home. But such was to be expected from a little kid and all. He waved again when Shalin noticed him. “Of course! It wouldn’t do to leave the woods all blighted and sick! It wasn’t any trouble at all.”

A bit tricky, yes, but never a problem. The woods were special, and deserved to be nurtured. “Tell me what?” he echoed aloud as her words were cut short.

Wren laughed as a shower of water droplets sprayed overhead. Grinning, he eyed the greninja and immediately nodded his head in return. “Hello to you too!” Behind him, Sprout let out another bellow of greeting—clearly, he wasn’t the only one entertained by the antics of this crew!

The sudden, shrill buzzing startled him, though, and Wren’s attention darted back to Shalin. Or rather, the blur of Shalin as the flygon shook her wings dry. Even just watching made his stomach flip over. “Holy moly, I don’t know how you do it!” he exclaimed once she was back to normal speed again. His head shook in amused disbelief. “I think I'd pass out.”

But obviously she had tons of fun with it—as evidenced by her whoops and cheers that had drifted through the air. Something only audible once Sandy’s wings had begun to slow down again.

[attr="class","sam-banner-up-blurb"] “I’m sorry to hear that,” he answered with a short sigh of his own. He couldn’t say he’d experienced anything similar, so he couldn’t really imagine what that must’ve been like. Still, it was sort of a shame, wasn’t it? “Great! I’m sure we’ll get along nicely.” Of course, it wasn’t exactly difficult to get along with Wren, who sought to please or accommodate most everyone he encountered, but all the same! And if this would help him with his stubborn goodra, all the better!

As the other explained, Wren listened intently– nodding along seriously, only for a laugh to brighten his attempt at somberness. “Oh, well that might be the problem then. I’m a bit of a softie, if I’m being honest. Especially with my pokemon.” There really wasn’t anything about Wren (in looks or personality) that screamed firm, or stern. His more compassionate nature tended to bleed through, even when angry or upset.

“A chef, huh? Wren didn’t mind the short conversation deviation. “Think I burn most things I try to cook–maybe I’ll stop by your restaurant sometime!” It was definitely bound to be better than anything he could come up with on his own.

His head tilted in thought, and a low hum followed the suggestion. “By that logic…should we battle, then?” His voice perked up as he suggested it, and one loose fist smacked loosely against the flat of the opposite palm as the lightbulb went off in his head. Granted, despite being a ranger captain, he wasn’t much for battling. After all, he used his team to protect and serve the region more than compete against others when it could be helped.

But if it would help bring his goodra to a less rebellious point, maybe he should explore all possible routes.

[attr="class","sam-banner-up-blurb"] Honestly, Wren couldn’t fathom how Shalin managed to tolerate the vibration of her flygon’s wings. With or without the sygna suit aiding her. Still, though, it was definitely a sight to see–all blurred light and buzzing noise.

“You good up there?” he called out, the edge of laughter mingling with his question. Even with a suit on, she seemed slightly winded from the practice. He waved back to her, “Seems like you’re not letting any time go to waste, though! That’s for sure!” Nothing wrong with practice, naturally. Especially with something as intensive as her work with the sygna suit seemed to be. “No problem! I needed to get out on a trip and stretch my legs a bit, y’know?”

He usually stuck to land mounts, but today he had at least one flying-type in his roster. In a flash of light, his skarmory flew free of his pokeball before thudding heavily to the ground for Wren to climb up into the saddle. First, he stooped to scoop up his psyduck, and then plopped the water-type into his backpack. His wide bill poked out under the top flap. “That sounds right, though! You been out here much before now?” Admittedly, the Mount Chimney area wasn’t as much his area of expertise.
