[attr="class","sam-banner-up-blurb"]As much as Wren loved being back in his hometown, the offer to travel out of Petalburg’s limits, and assist Shalin in mapping a new area sounded nice. It was a dose of adventure that the young captain felt like he was in dire need of. While he still oversaw many tasks out of doors, there was also a fair portion of his days allotted to things like paperwork, and delegating different duties to his squad, rather than taking them on himself. While that was part of the job, of course, the young captain was eager to assist in a more natural landscape rather than spending his afternoon in his office.

Per usual, Wren was unfazed to approach their designated meet up space and find Shalin in concentrated practice. While he’d enjoyed riding Flit back on their first trip to the silent icelands months ago, he couldn’t imagine hanging out on a flygon’s wing the way she so confidently managed. Beside him, his psyduck honked at the sight–arms lifting to press against his forehead. It seemed the wild movement and choice to subject herself willingly to those vibrations left the lil guy in a tizzy. Clearly Winston would not be one to ride a flygon.

Wren laughed, crouching down to console the silly psyduck as he waited for her test run to finish up.

[attr="class","sam-banner-up-blurb"]He was pretty sure he wasn’t running behind. But time always had a habit of overtaking Wren. And now he was trying his best to hurry through Petalburg Wood, with the moseying pace of the venusaur in his company keeping things nice and steady. “Hope we’re not too late, Sprout!”

Even though it seemed like such a funny name for such a big pokemon now, Wren would never regret naming him as such. It still fit, after all– no matter his size or skill, Sprout would always continue to be a bit of an overgrown, lovable baby. Even if he proved to be a formidable force to be reckoned with when put to the task. For now, though, he lumbered through the forest behind Wren. Normally he might’ve opted to sit on the massive, unfurled flower on the venusaur’s back–huddled among the bright, sunny yellow petals. But today he felt like walking. It was nice to connect with nature in that way. Particularly in a branch of the wood that was slowly returning to normal with the blight cleared out.

It was unsurprising to find Shalin up to her typical antics, quite literally on the verge buzzing around her home. His hand lifted in greeting. Behind him, Sprout’s wide mouth opened as a rumbling grunt beat Wren to the punch. “Hello, up there!”

[attr="class","sam-banner-up-blurb"] “No worries, either way! Mix ups happen–I know I’ve caused my own fair share of them,” he admitted with a sheepish laugh. He could be, well…a bitforgetful and scatterbrained on even the best of days, so he wasn’t about to take it personally.

Wren perked as the other introduced himself, enthusiasm seeping into his voice. “Likewise, Shin! I look forward to working with you.” Shinobu’s speculation was fair, and Wren nodded along to himself as he considered–“I guess I wouldn’t say she’s mean exactly, so much as unruly.”

Mad stubborn on top of that. She would be doing what she wanted, when she wanted, thank you very much. Or so it had been made clear to the captain, who had just wanted her to help put out a small brush fire at the edge of Petalburg Woods the week prior. In the end, he’d had to scramble to call out his vaporeon to assist.

“Mmm, no I think she’s just your typical goodra. No variation, or anything. I guess it can be chalked up to no two pokemon are just alike, but she’s really a bit wild.” And prone to lumbering off at her whim, and at a wildly quick pace for a goodra.

“Ah, well that’s no good. I’m sure you’re totally capable!” he chirped in response. The redhead certainly seemed to know his stuff, after all. So who was to say that didn’t extend into all aspects of his life? Plus Wren had never really been the sort to make snap judgements. “I’m sure it gets to be a little bit of a repetitive thing, though. So it’s all good!”

Looking down at Juno, his hands balled into loose fists at his hips. The leafeon yipped cheerfully in response, and returned to wind circles around his ankles. “So! Where do we start?”

[attr="class","star2"] Basil is equally as uneasy about treading the blighted ground. Hooves sink into dry soil and rotted plant life as Wren coaxes him forward, until they can plod alongside Elijah and his own gogoat.[break][break]

Wren hums doubtfully. “Do you think a salazzle would be capable to this extent, though?” And if so, why? He’s never seen a disease so rampant, either. But then again–he’s still green.

Any sort of botanical epidemic would be a new experience. He’s limited to photos and footage he’s seen in his classes.[break][break]

His hands reach up to thread through the finer fur at the top of his gogoat’s head between the horns. Basil huffs, impatient to either get out of the area or carry on rather than treading in place.[break][break]

“You’re right,” he says after a beat. A slow sigh filters out of his lungs, and he can’t shake the weird vibe the area seems to have.[break][break]

“Feels kind of ominous, you know? Not in, like, a natural way.”

Obviously they weren’t actively avoiding one another. They didn’t really talk about work when they were together. That time was filled with the sorta stuff they’d always talked about, and…other things. That was okay, some aspects of Levy’s job he thought were maybe best left out of sight and out of mind–even if he wasn’t as aggressively anti-rocket as many of his fellow rangers could be. For now, it was enough to actually enjoy the fact that he got to be with Levy now in a way that hadn’t been previously accessible to him.[break][break]

It still felt a bit unreal at moments, but Wren had never been the sort to take that feeling pessimistically. It felt a little more like awe, really. But with the way their schedules managed to clash, it was a wonder to actually have a night with a decent chunk of time together. Maybe he should get better at that–but juggling captain duties had proven hard. He’d get there, though. Surely. Maybe just…when he was old.[break][break]

“Huuuhhh?” he replied, not budging from where he’d nestled himself. His head was still firmly planted in the crook of Levy’s neck. “Time for what?” Wren failed to stifle a yawn, the sound muffled against Levy’s shirt, though eventually he regretfully sat up to rub at his eyes–sore from reading paperwork throughout the day. Way too much paperwork.[break][break]

“Could sleep a thousand years, I think.” But despite his fatigue and stress, he smiled at Levy. Drowsily, he leaned forward to boop their noses together. “You have a good day? Sorta nice to actually get home around the same time for once.”

Not that Wren took any issue with that.

“That’s strange, I’m not sure why they wouldn’t send over that info.” He perked up, easily turning chipper as he introduced himself. “I’m Wren. Or, well, Captain Rourke from the Petalburg division, but Wren’s just fine!” A lighthearted laugh twined through his rambling.

“But yeah, I have this goodra that I just can’t seem to get a handle on. He’s way more finicky than my dratini..” His hands clapped together at the explanation given, quick to agree to any help he could get. “Any insight you can give is probably way better than what I’ve tried to come up with.”

Ready to get to work, he paused with a small frown as the other paused. Wren shook his head instinctively, something frantic creeping into his tone. “Oh, no! That’s not a problem at all! I don’t mind, though I’m sorry if I gave the impression that I might be.” Juno trotted forward, peering up at the manectric in curious greeting. His leafeon was as forward as ever.

[attr="class","star2"]True to the assumption, Wren knows exactly the message is from when it shows up in his inbox. Terse as ever, it seems. No less deterred by that taciturn demeanor, Wren sets out on the designated Tuesday.[break][break]

Though admittedly, despite being a morning person, he finds it a bit difficult to peel out of bed and away from the warmth of being snuggled against Levy Alinsky ’s back.[break][break]

But it’s important, so he sets off early– a like minded proclivity. His steps might have dragged with morning drowsiness had it not been for the steady pace set by his gogoat. elijah gardner didn’t need to inform Wren of the purpose for the meeting request for him to assume what it might be about.[break][break]

At least the birds still sing in the trees. No more than an absent thought as they trot deeper into the thick of the woods. The blight spreads around them. Shriveled and rotted plantlife dotted with sickly signs of deterioration. The further they tread, the quieter it grows as the wild pokemon migrate away from the destruction.[break][break]

As Petalburg’s captain, it feels like a pressing issue. One that this meetup will allow a closer look at. When he finally finds Elijah, a worried frown has settled on his face. Gold eyes drift up to study the other, and despite trying, he fails to rouse his typical cheeriness. “Not at all…” his head still dips in greeting. “Morning.”[break][break]

“Strange, how abruptly this happened.” Once blight sets in, though, is where the real issue takes hold.

[attr="class","sam-banner-up-blurb"]Dragon types were admittedly not Wren’s strong suit. Sorta vexing, really— he liked to think that he was decent in getting along with most Pokémon he came across. It had been that, along with his love for the environment, that had spurred him to become a ranger in the first place.

Though he supposed there were exceptions to the rule—like the eevee he’d caught for Levy. And apparently, his goodra. He didn’t get it! It was a water-based dragon, and he’d thought they were largely docile creatures. But this one was hell bent on stubborn mischief!

He couldn’t manage to train her a bit! It was a little embarrassing as a captain, in all honesty. But he was young, and doing his best. Even Wren had to acknowledge the need for help sometimes.

It felt a bit odd to be meeting in Sootopolis, given its Rocket occupation, but Wren wasn’t about to start complaining. It was a city known for its draconid roots after all. Maybe it’d have some sort of calming effect on his goodra?

Approaching the designated meeting spot, he spied a redhead turned away from him. Unaware that the younger man wouldn’t see him, he lifted a hand to wave. “Hey! Are you Shinobu? I think I’m supposed to be meeting you here. About my goodra?” His leafeon paced beside Wren, ears twitching curiously at the stranger.

[attr="class","sam-banner-up-blurb"]Clover is a dutiful creature—sturdy and resilient. If Wren weren’t so fond of traveling via his gogoat, it would be likely that she traveled with him instead. As it stands, though, she does well in assisting him with his current botany projects, and in tending his personal garden.

So it was a no-brainer to send her along to work on filling the patches allotted for a crystabloom project. As other mudbray and mudsdale dig up their designated areas, Clover follows suit. Rototiler ploughing up the soft earth in a fastidiously straight column.

Back and forth until the section is adequately prepared for the next round of growth promoted by other types of Pokémon assigned to the task.

Was he really cut out for this job? Wren had to wonder if that was so. The learning curve had been a steep one, and even after a handful of months he was still adjusting. At least graduation has been taken care of and his botany classes were one less thing to have on the agenda[break][break]

But still he was tired. His keys jingled in the knob as he pushed the door open, posture slumped as he kicked his shoes off in the entry and nudged them to the corner with his foot. Juno followed dutifully behind, before flopping in her bed in the corner of the kitchen.[break][break]

There was something baking in the oven, but the kitchen was empty. A dial timer ticked on resiliently in its solitude on the little ledge above the stove. Wren dropped his bag on a pulled out barstool and kept wandering.[break][break]

Seeking out the source of respite he knew he’d be able to find in Levy.[break][break]

Was he hiding? No… of course he was sitting in the den, curled on the comfy, but second hand loveseat they’d scrounged up when they had first moved in a few months ago. Suddenly this cozy cottage type deal had become home despite the fact that he still got some rooms mixed up with the memory of the layout of his last place.[break][break]

But Wren knew that home had more to do with who filled the space beside him.[break][break]

Like a cat demanding attention, he beelined for his partner and half-crawled, half-flopped onto him. A wordless whine of exhaustion was pressed against the curve of Levy’s shoulder and neck as Wren sagged, gold eyes sliding shut.

[attr="class","star2"] He felt comfortable like this. Like he could finally take in a breath of fresh air. There were no thoughts in his mind that things might take a turn toward the worst. All he’d wanted since he’d seen Levy fall at Littleroot, was to find him again. For things to be like they were before, even if some aspects had changed.[break][break]

This was all he needed. For Levy to stay.[break][break]

His eyes fluttered shut as fingers threaded the pale strands of his hair. Only to sliver open again as Levy spoke and a smile slipped across his face. His own stretched wider, heart skittering in his chest. “Yeah, me too.”[break][break]

Each kiss provoked a sigh as something lightened in him more and more. After so long of holding this part of himself back, and biting down on his tongue, it was a relief to not need to anymore. Finally, it’d been said aloud, and he hadn’t been turned away for it. He’d been welcomed—it had been returned.[break][break]

Wren’s arms slid around Levy’s neck, careful to mind his bruised shoulder as he pressed closer. Maybe awkwardly so with his clumsy leg cast. But with no less effort. A kiss pressed to his ear, his neck before he nestled his forehead there. “You know, I could say the same exact thing, Lev.” Even if he didn’t believe it, Wren knew it to be true. And unlikely to change anytime soon. Ever.

[attr="class","star2"]There was a part of his mind that wanted to read into every little thing Levy said. To twist the context of liking sweet things so that it meant something more directed. More personal. But that obviously wasn’t what he meant, and Wren would be stupid to take it that way. “Sweet tooth, huh? That’s funny–I’d think that you’d like to drink your coffee black.” Just to be cool. Not that Wren thought that was a problem. He quickly shut his mouth to keep from babbling and backtracking.[break][break]

Besides, he probably wouldn’t think that Wren was all that sweet if he knew those were his inner thoughts. How selfish Wren actually was inside where no one was able to see past his cheerful nature.[break][break]

His eyes followed Levy’s attention to the television, but he wasn’t sure what was fascinating about it. Maybe he was interested in the news report. Or…sports? That didn’t seem correct, though. His attention drifted to study the other’s profile, internally burning up with guilt for staring at him so directly. He was really bad at this being chill thing, wasn’t he?[break][break]

“Bet they still remember you, though. People are good with regulars like that.” He nodded knowingly–as if he, a teenager, had any real idea about it. His head tilted, face warming in sync with Levy’s. But soon enough a grin stretched across his face despite any nerves. “Yeah, sure! Like…what?”
