breaking in to either ranger headquarter in lilycove or slateport would prove to be far more complicated than it needs to be. but it makes sense considering for them to store their information physically. it removes the threat of being hacked.[break][break]

thankfully, two of rocket's finest have been assigned to this mission. how lucky, too, as it gives theo the chance to assess how his recruit does in the field.[break][break]

she was comfortable, now. KING WAYLAND had told her she would either sink or swim, and she was still breathing, racing, climbing. she’d gotten blood on her hands. she’d trained with the beasts, and she was well on her way to becoming a force to be reckoned with.

if only NIKO MANNER could see her now.

a pokéball released a rotom.

”take care of the cameras and any alarms you can find, please.”

and then it was off to disable surveillance and make its way inside. shortly after, a door was unlocked. there was the smallest spark in a window directing them to which one.

nina started towards it.

the rotom buzzes to life, gets to work, and within a minute they've earned safe entry into the building without the risk of being detected by cameras. efficient, he has to admit.[break][break]

so he follows after her, approaching the appropriate window only to place his hand on it to slide it up. it gives without much resistance, leading them into what he assumes to be the break room.[break][break]

"the file room should be in the basement."

the window slid up and they made their way into the ranger headquarters with relative ease. it was dark, and nina opted to leave it that way. in case any cameras remained overlooked, she pulled a hood over her hair before leaving the room and further into the offices.

”got it.”

looking across the space, she then looked back to theo. she had an especially good locater-of-things if need be, but she guessed it wouldn’t hurt to ask, ”do you know where it is?” for efficiency’s sake.

theo doesn't bother with a disguise or with concealing his identity. but this is nothing new as he's always made it a point to be seen since arriving in hoenn.[break][break]

despite that, there are many that are still unaware of his infamy. surprisingly.[break][break]

he pauses for a moment to think, recalling the floorplan of this building. he might not have a photographic memory but he is someone who is well-prepared.[break][break]

"i believe it will be the third door to our left once we make our way down the stairs."

nina was aware of theo’s infamy, of course, but she wasn’t ready to give up her own identity just yet—especially not when she was looking for a new side gig.

the underboss came prepared with knowledge, unsurprisingly, and nina nodded and echoed affirmatively, ”third door on the left.”

she proceeded towards the stairs, and down them, and then past one door… two…

rotom hovered beside her as her hand reached to open the third to what she had the utmost faith would be the file room.

for a man his size and build, theo is able to move quietly, footsteps not quite loud enough to carry down the hall. he follows her, staying close enough to jump in to help if needed.[break][break]

the door opens to reveal the file room. it seems their mission would go according to plan. at least for the moment.[break][break]

nodding, he gestures into the room before stepping in himself. he makes sure to close the door afterward.[break][break]

"hm."[break][break]

he looks around the room at the many, many cabinets.[break][break]

"they must've buried it somewhere in here."

the file room was on the other side, seemingly unguarded. it was full of a sea of cabinets, and she was suddenly flashing back to her mission with @kane and her frantic search in a sea of pokeballs.

”there’s so many…”

she then commanded the rotom over her shoulder, ”help us look for anything on giant pokémon.” it went off to do as told, phasing through various cabinetry to rifle through the contents.

nina tried for a more strategic approach, looking at each label on the front of the containers for any relevant words.

”do you know if they’re calling it anything? like, there’s mega evolution, and then there’s… you know, whatever is making the pokémon so big.”

he admits as he peruses through various files. most are of uninteresting and of no use, but it is interesting to see how the rangers sort their files. they basically don't.[break][break]

"alpha sounds like a good name for it."[break][break]

one of the cabinets he pulls open has a sticker of a black purrloin on it. it's spooky enough to make some unsuspecting cadet jump but theo just stares at it with indifference.[break][break]

after a moment, he glances back at nina.[break][break]

”this is insane. how do they find anything like this?”

another drawer was slid shut quietly, and she moved onto the next. there wasn’t really any quicker way to do this that she could determine.

at theo’s suggestion, she glanced over. he was just making up a name. unsure how else to respond, she nodded, ”yeah, alpha sounds cool.” and returned to her search.

”no. it’d be nice if they were at least alphabetized… what about you?”

apparently, the lilycove rangers prefer their files digital. it's the only logical explanation he can think of as to why their files are such a mess.[break][break]

she kept looking, as did the floating rotom, phasing in and out of cabinetry to rifle through their contents and coming up short every time.

”yeah, same, nothing here either.”

a metal drawer slid shut, latching quietly, and she was onto the next. soon enough, her thoughts were wandering, having little to do with the monotonous task at hand.

”so like, you’d probably be good at getting forged documents and stuff like that, right?”

it was then that a thought hit her. she’d been ready to ask him for a passport, but how did leaving the region as a small-fry like her look to rocket? like a potential escape, probably. a lot of people wanted out, right? she’d come to realize that, after voluntarily becoming part of all of it.

”um, actually… never mind.”

she would ask later, after she had established more trust. proven her loyalty. the last thing she wanted was to look suspicious. that just wasn’t her style.
