Geez, that thing that happened in Sootopolis was pretty wild. You know the one, the sky went black and an alien tried to destroy the world or something similar. Jax was not physically present, but he was here to help with the aftermath nevertheless. Rangers across the region were called upon to help the area recover, and boy did the water surrounding Sootopolis need a check up.

Jax's specific job was to scour the water for injured corsola, apparently the dark powers of the aforementioned alien did quite a number on their population. Yeah sure no problem, one thing though: Jax did not have a water pokemon. I mean he supposed he could swim, but he was not really dressed for it. Hopefully his partner Caleb Harcourt would have something they could use to cruise the sea. Otherwise they would look pretty silly!

And thus Jax awaited his companion, like a princess waiting for her hero to rescue her from a tower. A lot of waiting involved is all...

Caleb was no fairytale prince, but he did have a water Pokémon, and it was upon her back that he now rode towards the rocky beach outside of Sootopolis to retrieve his princess - er, partner Ranger - for the day's mission. Jax Cox was easy enough to spot, with his usual flourish and his now-somewhat-windswept platinum blond hair, and Caleb directed Lyra to the other man's position with efficiency. She swam up close to the shoreline so that Jax would be able to access her great shell.[break][break]
"Oi, Jax!" Caleb called out teasingly to his fellow Ranger, flashing the other man a playful grin. "Need a ride?"[break][break]
Caleb knew Tam Fawley had assigned him to this mission precisely because Lyra would make it easy to visit the islands nearby to Sootopolis to check up on the Pokémon populations there. Something about Corsola in need of rehabilitation, he'd remembered reading in the mission file (he used to ignore them, but he was trying to do a bit better these days - for the Region's sake). He wasn't entirely sure how one would go about "rehabilitating" a Corsola, but Jax was a medic, so he surely knew what he was doing. Caleb was happy enough to provide the ride and then just sit back, relax, and watch the other man work.[break][break]

As Caleb's floating form came into view, Jax would light up and begin waving his arms as if he were difficult to see. "Caleb!" He shouted as he hopped up and down, "I'm over here Caleb! Caleb!" Jax hoped to at least get a chuckle out of his mission partner, a bit of light hearted tomfoolery before what was likely to be a heavy mission. Helping injured pokemon was not exactly fun and fancy free after all.

As Caleb came near, Jax let out an exaggerated sigh of relief. "My hero! Thank goodness you saw me." Jax daintily climbed aboard, throwing one leg over another as he settled into the lapras shell. How did they get these shells so comfortable? A mystery for the ages.

Jax clapped his hands together, "Right then, we patrol for injured corsola. Hopefully they aren't too far scattered, it'll be a struggle to get to them all." Did Jax think he could save every possibly injured corsola in one day? Probably, and don't you dare imply he can't!

Caleb couldn't help but roll his eyes at Jax's ridiculously over-dramatic flailing, but he continued grinning all the same as the other man hopped up onto Lyra's back - this was typical Jax behavior, after all. "You're a pretty difficult person to miss, Jax," Caleb chuckled. "Now, to actually earn the title of hero, I ought to get you quickly to the injured Corsola." With that, he urged Lyra back into the depths of the open sea, trying to decide exactly which direction they should head first.[break][break]
There are some islands to the south of Sootopolis with rich coral reefs, Caleb remembered, orienting himself by checking the position of the sun. "Head South," he commanded of Lyra, and she trilled in acquiescence, speeding off in search of the nearest Southern island.[break][break]
Lyra was quite an efficient swimmer. The salty sea breeze whipped even Caleb's short-cropped brown hair all about as she glided forward. Soon enough, they approached the rocky shoreline of a small island - Caleb could see the shimmering colors of the coral beneath Lyra's flippers as the waters became more shallow. "Jax, hey, does that look like a Corsola to you?" Caleb called out to his companion, pointing down at something pink attached to a rock, still partly submerged in the water. Sea foam coalesced around it...it seemed stuck somehow. "Definitely looks like it needs help," Caleb noted, brow furrowing with concern.

It was a quiet start, bobbing along the ocean with an air of hopeful confidence. Jax attempted to look as noble as possible, his posture absolutely flawless as he searched for injured corsola. The best case scenario in his mind would be to find nothing at all, that would mean that all was well and no innocent pokemon would need saving today!

Alas, fairy tale endings were for children's books and royal weddings. Caleb pointed to a pink figure floating in the water, and Jax put a hand over his eyes as he leaned in to confirm. "Good job slugger. Let's get a closer look." The rescue crew came in close enough to reach for the pink figure, and Jax would not hesitate to do so.

As he lifted the pink creature out of the water, he immediately felt a red flag. It was much heavier than a corsola, now why could that be? Jax got his answer quickly, discovering that he had in-fact latched onto the scalp of a slowpoke. Lifted from its place of rest, the slowpoke yawned and looked around--as if it could not tell that its head was currently being held.

Jax yelped, "Opps, sorry!" and slowly put the slowpoke back. The medic huffed, folding his arms and shaking his head. "Well at least it isn't injured." A splash caught Jax's attention, and he would look over to find the key to their corsola effort. He quickly pointed toward his discovery, "Caleb look! Follow those Mareanie!" Indeed a small pod of mareanie were heading somewhere in a hurry--which usually meant that there was an easy meal nearby.

Such as injured corsola...s?

Slowpoke always seemed to show up when you least expected them. Luckily, they weren't particularly aggressive Pokémon. Jax handled the situation like a pro, dropping the sleepy fellow back into the water with a splash.[break][break]
The school of agitated Mareanie was another matter, however. At Jax's request, Caleb patted Lyra's neck and urged the Lapras forward. "Let's find out what they're up to," he agreed. She glided through the waves with a burst of speed, and Caleb held onto Jax's shirt so the other man wouldn't go flying off into the depths of the ocean. That would be pretty funny, Caleb had to admit, but if there were any injured Corsola, Jax's services would definitely be needed. Not to mention, Caleb wasn't that big of an ass.[break][break]
Sure enough, the Mareanie did seem to be circling around something clinging to an errant piece of driftwood off the shore of a different island. It was pink and spikey, and Caleb was certain that this time, they'd found themselves a Corsola. It made a sorrowful keening sound as the Mareanie started attacking with their thorned tentacles. Not good...[break][break]
"Lyra, try and scare them off," Caleb commanded. The Lapras surged forward and opened her mouth, releasing a DRAGON PULSE at the dozen or so Mareanie. He could tell she was doing her best to avoid the injured Corsola. The Mareanie scattered in alarm, and the Lapras trilled triumphantly, bringing Caleb and Jax right up to the driftwood so they could further investigate.
