he can't deny that he just jumped on the hoenn adventure bandwagon once he's saved up enough for travel. it's the premier destination for people seeking for thrills, after all.

people always said they hated the region, but it still had a steady amount of people migrating. it confused him for a bit, but after being in the region for a while, he understands.

"here's the location based on the report, tam."

jake responds to the scene with the city's captain. the sight was something else to see-- and he's been at floaroma town and seen a whole cloud of combee before too! perhaps it just seemed surreal when it's in the city.

"what's the move? are we going to smoke them off or lure them away? one of them feels like the right decision, but it's also, how do i say this, risky?"

Smoke is the right word, because with the most unimpressed expression in the world, the captain blows out smoke, holding a cigarette. At least it helps to keep the Combee away.

”What do you think is the right call?” Tam asks Jake then, raising a brow. Not because he doesn’t know the answer, of course, but because if he’s supposed to be training Jake over here, he might as well train him to make these sort of decisions on his own.

”If you just smoke them out, they’ll scatter and go everywhere, so it might turn into more of a problem. If you lure them… These are more aggressive than most Combee, so yeah, it’s pretty damn risky.”

he knew he asked for dangerous things to happen when he decided hoenn was the place for him, but he didn't intend for it to be so devoid of the exciting part of his criteria.

"i guess we're luring them away."

he looks at his pack. the repellant he packed wouldn't be useful in this situation, so he pushes it at the back of his bag. without grass-types to use sweet scent, he resorts to honey.

with a big exertion of force, he grunts as he opens the jar right there and then.

"this is the move!" he presents the open jar to tam. "right?"

while he seems proud, the scent already wafts through the area the moment it has been unsealed, garnering the attention of the bees.

Rarely do people get much out of the stoic captain, but with this one, he smirks while Jake is too busy with trying to open his jar of honey. Oh, this is going to go south. What better way to learn than from mistakes, though?

By the time Jake turns to look at him, Tam’s expression is back to the usual pokerface.

”Sure, kid.” He even pats the cadet’s shoulder, as if proud of him. ”What’s your move now? Run?”

Nodding towards the approaching Combee, Tam calls out his Chansey. Mostly for his own safety, honestly.

”Might wanna get started, then.”

huh?

he looks up from his jar and sees the consequences of his actions. he sweats as he quickly racks his brain for a solution. run? that's the move, he supposed, given that luring them away suggested that course of action.

"y-yes! right away!"

he closes the lid of the jar without tightening it before he books it. jake doesn't even look back to see if tam was getting swarmed or not as self-preservation trumps other instinct.

he gets a pokemon out and shouts a command. "tailwind!" he shouts as the drifblim forms from the light. "do the opposite direction!"

the gust of wind comes as directed by the trainer, slowing down the combees and their lack of aerodynamic designs. it has the added feature of propagating the smell all over the street though.

At least Jake is a pretty decent runner… Or, well, Tam thinks so, at least, and that’s coming from someone who actually likes running as a hobby. Today, though, the captain stays right where he is. What does he do about the potential of getting swarmed? The thing that won’t require him to waste a perfectly good cigarette.

”Can you CHARM them?” He asks his Chansey, taking another drag.

Sure enough, when a Combee approaches, ready to attack, his Chansey manages to make it more compliant, and for the sake of efficiency, he also calls out his Ditto so it’ll take a Combee’s form.

This Combee uses SWEET SCENT, successfully luring a lot of its kin towards itself and away from Jake.

”You okay over there?” Tam calls out to him.

eventually, he's given relief.

he drops to his knees and pants, holding his head low as he recovers from exerting himself all of a sudden. "y-yeah," he answers in between breaths, raising a thumbs up. "i'm fine."

the next thing he knows, the captain has the situation under control for the most part. it's away from the rest of the citizens for now, at the very least.

next part of the job was to take one of them to be observed.

"i just capture one to send back to HQ, right?" he asks as he produces a pokeball. "then we send the rest back to the wild?"

he wonders if he remembers the rest of his assignment as he throws a pokeball at the clump.

He’s a good kid. Eager, a little too excitable, and definitely too much of an adrenaline junkie for his own good, but still a good kid. Honestly, Jake reminds Tam a little of how he had been back when he first became a ranger, but then again, he had been seventeen back then.

”Yep. Now that they’re calmer I can have my Togekiss and Ditto here guide them out of the city so they won't cause more trouble.” Tam explains, calling Chansey back and releasing the Jubilee Pokémon in her place. The Togekiss flies in a graceful loop, then circling around Jake.

”...Wanna go along?”

At least flying should be less exhausting than running. Much more fun too.

Just in case, he throws one of his own pokéball at the nearest Combee.

he whips his head back up and recoils at the offer.

"um, it's fine. i can stay," he chuckles nervously. "i'll go check the area around for stragglers."

cause you never know if there's still a member of the aggressive combee colony around that just got lost or something.

he's had enough combee for the day. maybe he'll be able to stand them tomorrow, but certainly not now.

"you can go ahead," he assures tam with a smile. he looks at the jar of honey he has on hand and only then tightens its lid. "i'll take care of the clean up."
