an excuse to get inside meteor falls was always going to be taken by jake.

he finds the shrine quick, following a beaten path that many people have obviously taken. the smooth stone floors have been passed on by many people, forming an easy way to navigate the caverns for someone new to hoenn like him.

as he reaches it, one thing pops in his head. a prayer that was chanted every night rings once more, and together with his floatzel, they pray their wishes for the new year.

he finds it uneasy, but eventually, he finds the clarity to say exactly what needs to be said.

"i'm thinking more like a free ranger. without any connection to any of the ranger bases."

slateport was nice and all. the city has everything that someone can ask for, major establishments are present in this one place, and most importantly, the people were all nice.

"i don't want to be tied down to one place when the going gets tough. i know it's not exactly how the job description works, but i don't like having to prioritize one place over another."

it's the implication of being stationed to one place.

every ranger base can still send their people to whichever part of hoenn needs help, but attachment still plays a part in their decisions. jake doesn't want to be hindered by it.

"i want to be a first responder when things go south, not the backup."

dangerous.

risky.

two words that bring excitement to jake.

"it's our duty as rangers of hoenn to keep the safety of the people prioritized," he tells tam. "shouldn't we handle it now before it becomes a bigger threat to civilians?"

he goes to fist bump the appendage of the ditto.

"we should take the bullet for the greater good." he faces the slime. "are you ready, little buddy?"

it doesn't take a scientist to figure out that entering a hive is likely to be met with great resistance. the erratic behavior of the combee is a looming threat, however, and it needs to be dealt with as soon as possible.

time was ticking. jake hypes himself up as he narrates the story in his head and waits for a directive from his superior.

"sure, boss!"

it's the only response he gives to Tam Fawley when he basically tells him to lower them down. down is where the action is, and if that's where the captain wants them to be, then he has no choice but to follow orders.

he pats his drifblim as he says the word. "phantom force!"

with all four still grasped by the drifblim's appendages, the ghost-type slinks into the shadow, and subsequently, sink back to the ground from gravity. like a turbulent airplane ride, the trip was convenient and quick, albeit nauseating for those unused to it.

they appear back to the ground in another bamboo forest. the drifblim is recalled back to its ball as jake starts to take his bearings back from what felt like vertigo. amid his random pacing, he steps on something metallic on the ground.

"wait, i thought it's soil?"

something underneath them starts to unearth itself. jake tries to remain on his feet, a mouth covering a smile that he cannot possibly show to two people pissed off by the place and a higher up that can write him up for not taking this seriously.

08 ride a launching celesteela unwittingly or on purpose to get to a destination.

SPACE-TIME DISTORTION #13

distortions never get old.

armed with a bb gun, jake comes in at the invitation of the thrill. unusually aggressive pokemon in every corner that don't follow conventional behaviors give him a different vibe than the ones found in the wild. those can be exploited by whatever traits they have, while these can't.

maybe it's just for fun and not at all practical, but he's doing it anyways.

he comes in, finds an enraged rhyhorn looking at one of the people who braved the same place for adventure or whatever, and shoots the gun he uses for airsoft, and attracts it's attention.

it takes the aggro away from the lucky hoenn citizen, but unbeknownst to them, jake was taking it for another reason. it's still his job as a ranger, but this time, it's a case of two birds with one stone, or in this case, one ammo.

+1 shard of choice

...three, four. it was just enough.

"i got this!"

a giant ariados on one direction. kartana on another. jake steps forward from the back and situates himself in the middle of their group and throws a pokeball directly below him.

"set us an updraft."

its appendages grab each of them, leaving their pokemon below, which jake figures can just be recalled if they want to. tailwind starts to blow from below, lifting the balloon pokemon, alongside its passengers up in the air.

his heart is racing. this was the hoenn experience he signed up for.

Orion Lykos's sarcastic message is met with enthusiasm. this is what he signed up for when he moved to hoenn: adventure and thrill that no other trip to any other region can match.

"yes, sir!" he responds with a casual salute.

eyes were round with curiosity when he shows the celesteela. he takes all the information in, like a diligent student on a field trip, as he wishes for a moment of his own to explore the area without reins.

but alas, he's here with a duty.

he wants to run. to jump. to go straight into the wilds. unfortunately, there's a method to the madness of venturing the alien world. he keeps himself contained to the best of is ability, turning to john nelson to make small talk after recognizing anxiety in his voice.

"it's not much, but it's exciting, right? i hope nothing bad happens to us, but you never know."

while he says it in an effort to be friendly, part of him prays for his words to jinx them.

two hands hold a phone securely as its camera points to yet one of hoenn's newest attraction for its circus show. arms shake as he struggles to keep his hands steady for a clear picture.

if anything, jake can't contain himself despite the way he behaves himself.

"this is so much better than what i expected, tam," he responds to the ranger captain. "distortions are nice, but nothing feels more like an adventure than a small party exploring the unknown wilds."

those space-time distortions are basically taken care of by civilians anyways. it's a free-for-all, except everyone who chips in holds their weight and leaves nothing for anyone else.

he flashes a smile to john nelson , not wanting to interrupt Tam Fawley 's question, while he gives Orion Lykos a nod. he seemed scary, given that he heard he was once a councilman for hoenn's league. politicians aren't exactly the type of people he can find himself getting close to.

maybe he can try for this trip, but his focus was on something else.

his heart races as he continues to take pictures of the wild. patience can only run as high as he waits for those higher up in the ladder than him to take the lead. he can already see himself racing to look at more views the moment he runs out of scenery to capture.

times are tough for someone who hasn't established themselves as a productive member of society. sure, the pay is nice at times, but he has to spend money on shirts when he failed to take into account the localized global warming on hoenn. he really only brought summer outfits when he left home.

when he learned that a party was ongoing, he decides that translates to free food.

fancy wear was one of the things he has fortunately owned. a slick dark coat with a clean, white dress shirt underneath and a tie doesn't particularly make him stand out from the rest, though he supposed that was what the obstagoon mask is for.

he arrives at the table just as Kazimir Wynter leaves. he makes a note that the incineroar mask was one of the smarter people, capitalizing on the money of rich people to get their stomachs full.

though not exactly the most stacked right now, jake does still have knowledge of the fancy foods laid down for them. he picks the most expensive ones to add on his plate regardless of whether he likes the taste or not.

tl;dr

arrives with obstagoon mask
hangs around and capitalizes on free food
open for interaction

I haven't thought much of my future, but I would pretty much like getting a title or having some sort of alias that makes me sound legendary, hehe!

Hmm, maybe shoes? I really like looking at them, but it's hard to find use for them when you spend so much time working in the wilds as a ranger!

Oh, I'd definitely show them what I'm made of if they happen to invade again! If I have to choose a favorite though, it would be, um, that one purple thing everyone has. It's pretty cool.

the second distortion he experiences brings a joy in jake's face.

hurriedly rushing in, he makes sure to take in as much images in his head and burn it to his memory for next time. this was all too exciting for him, giving too much stimulus for the thrill-seeker in him.

everywhere he goes, he sees people take pokemon out, which he concludes was to shift their appearance to something else. instead of taking care of the problem, he finds himself in a trance, too much in awe to move.

when he finally finds the clarity, he instead takes out a notepad and a pen, quickly jotting down the pokemon with unusual forms on paper, along with other oddities.

good to know that he wasn't the only one with the same point of view. there's confidence built up on camaraderie, and jake is hopeful that similar sentiments will lead to that.

the pat on the back just gives him the much needed boost.

jake plunges into the depths of ever grande as he follows the lead of the other ranger. a torch attached to their suit lights up the waters beneath the surface, wherein they would soon find the reason for the corsola problem.

huntail and gorebyss circle the reef that the corsola have planted themselves on. they circle the group of them like the predators that they are, forcing the pink pokemon to bunker down defensively to prevent themselves from getting picked on.

a hand frantically points at the problem as jake looks at the ranger captain expectantly. he would go, but he'd rather see how the experts deal with it instead.

finishing up children's pokemon was easy for someone straight out of fight area, sinnoh. he didn't spectate all those fights for nothing.

as the finishing blow is landed, lance comes clapping like he did something. jake doesn't seem to mind though, and smiles at the comment.

"is it because this is a school? hehe, i get your pun."

whether it's intentional or not, he kind of feels bad for the children. maybe he should've let them get the win, but on the other hand, it's a good lesson to learn that losing is a normal part of pokemon battles.

"oh yeah, i'm looking for a recommendation letter for a promotion. would you mind if i ask you for it, please?"

his buizel was so good at dodging it starts showing off its agility. the way it runs around the battlefield leaves afterimages behind because he's just that good at the dodge strat.

as it circles around the animal named creatures, the buizel starts wrangling them up, water forming underneath them. slowly, it pulls all three in a vortex.

a whirlpool sucks all of them.

jake looks at his watch. it was about time this ends. surely, the children will just give up and this little fight ends soon, but it's very nice to see his pokemon not die in a single turn against electric-types.
