sneaking seems to be effective for the most part. it avoids needless conflict, and most importantly, they don't have to waste their potions healing their pokemon before they fight the reported aggressive wild pokemon.

"it's boss versus boss... who's going to win..."

jake starts to commentate like he's the narrator of some wildlife documentary he's been forced to watch as part of his ranger training. it was just homework and no one quizzed him about them afterwards, so he wonders if everyone actually did watched it til the end like he did.

his commentary stops when they finally reach an area where honey starts to aggressively spill out of everywhere. it's clear that they're near.

"you know, it's kinda nice that training takes you to something like this," he shares in a hushed tone. "i expected it to be tame all the way out."

from what it looks like, taking on the hive doesn't seem tame at all.

”It's boss versus boss... who's going to win..."

”You’d be a great sports commentator if you fail your ranger exams.” Tam says quietly in the most deadpan tone ever, half to tease Jake and half as a reminder that there are indeed tests awaiting him so he should take this mission seriously. This whole “aggressive Combee” thing is starting to get a little out of hand, but since he had brought Jake with him the first time they had ran into this problem, bringing him to deal with the hive makes sense to Tam. He should be ready.

Still, he sure hadn’t expected there to be this much honey. From where it clings to his shoulder, his Ditto tries to reach for some of it, and Tam has to stop it.

”Be glad you’re training in Hoenn and not somewhere like Unova.” His own ranger training had been tame just about all the way through, and while it hadn’t been bad and he had adapted well enough once actually working, some more fieldwork sure would have made the transition much easier for all parties involved.

”We’re only here to investigate for now, though… We have no idea what we may be dealing with, so try not to run around getting all of their attention this time.”

With that last whispered comment, Jake gets a passing and slight smirk.

he chuckles softly at the attempt of a joke, taking it more as a reminder to compose himself than anything else.

"is it because hoenn-" he stops himself from mentioning 'desperate' "-needs more numbers in their forces?" it's an innocent question, which just appears from the spur of the moment as a result of the other's quip. "i'll apply to be a ranger journalist person if that doesn't happen anyways, don't worry."

as tam explains what was required of him, he stops talking and nods. he's going to let the captain take the lead this time to see how they really operate under these kinds of situations.

he expected to just rush in, wing it, and then just pray for the best after reading some stories about hoenn on the internet, but he might be wrong on the actual protocol.

”Damn, I almost thought you were about to call Hoenn a shitshow.” Said in his usual neutral way, his expression being as neutral as ever. Jake is not wrong to think of Hoenn as desperate, they need all the help they can get, but he sure is much more tactful in his wording than Tam himself. Tact has never been Tam’s strongsuit anyway.

He can sit around and watch the behaviour of a hive of Combee for a whole damn day if needed.

Thankfully for Jake, that won’t be needed in this case.

”They’re acting erratic, but I can’t see anything that would directly affect their behaviour…” Tam comments after a moment, his gaze still fixed on the hive and the Combee. His Ditto, meanwhile, has been attempting to stretch towards Jake and poke him with one gooey appendage. ”It might be the Vespiquen that leads them, but to get a look at her we’d have to go deeper into the hive.”

dangerous.

risky.

two words that bring excitement to jake.

"it's our duty as rangers of hoenn to keep the safety of the people prioritized," he tells tam. "shouldn't we handle it now before it becomes a bigger threat to civilians?"

he goes to fist bump the appendage of the ditto.

"we should take the bullet for the greater good." he faces the slime. "are you ready, little buddy?"

it doesn't take a scientist to figure out that entering a hive is likely to be met with great resistance. the erratic behavior of the combee is a looming threat, however, and it needs to be dealt with as soon as possible.

time was ticking. jake hypes himself up as he narrates the story in his head and waits for a directive from his superior.
