Last month, during the Slateport Splashfest, the League had purchased most (if not all) Clamperl and pearls found by divers. At the time, having sold a few of them, Mars had wondered what use the League could have for such things, and eventually, he just so happened to learn that thanks to the efforts of some oh-so-kind rangers, a few of them had been sent right here: to this pokémon shelter in Slateport City.

Rescued Spoink sweetly slumber on this September night, bouncing lightly even in their slumber. Atop of their heads resting the beautiful pearls, given to them as replacement for ones that had likely once been stolen. Bingo.

From within a Zorua’s ILLUSION, wearing a face that isn’t his, Tuesday smiles faintly. When he had said ‘gorgeous’, he had clearly meant the pearls, not the pokémon.

A SONG sung by a small Smoochum had pulled the Spoink into deep slumber, and now, standing next to the hidden Zorua, a Delibird awaits for the next pearl Tuesday pulls from one the Spoink in the little pen. The PSYCHIC type stirs in its slumber, but it doesn’t wake.

”Just pass them to the Delibird as you grab them, she’ll keep them safe.” He tells Sienna Bell then, smirking.

The building is closed, it’s late, and no interruptions are expected.

Sienna appeared in the shelter under no pretense of illusion. Grandiloquent to a fault, the libertine only took advantage of cloth and circumstance. She traded out her designer white for surreptitious black and her long, red braids for a black cloak. Her distinctive makeup remained, though, like flames licking across the underside of her eyes, singing her cheeks. Crime is temporary; glamour is forever.[break][break]

Pearls, though. Pearls always remain, especially if they’re faked. What kind of market had she stumbled into?[break][break]

“Beautiful indeed,” she purred while lifting a pilfered pearl to the flickering shelter lights. “I wonder how much they go for. I know a few ladies who’d kill to have fragments of these as earrings.”[break][break]

The bouncing Spoinks were of no consequence. Sienna did not delude herself with grandiose perorations of Pokemon cruelty or protection. Profit exists in a sphere above welfare, the sitting regent of all careful decisions. What could she buy with the pearls? Whose life could she save? ~~Maya, Maya, Maya, Maya.~~[break][break]

Instructions were clear, but greed disconcerted her. She gingerly took another pearl into her perfectly manicured hands so that she held two, wary of waking the victim of her theft but not wary enough to keep quiet about it. A smile split her face like snaking thorns. “Aw, can’t keep it? What’s the harm in one missing pearl?”[break][break]

Humor licked her tone, but her eyes were mirthless. They flashed dangerously, like a coiled snake waiting to strike.

It's the end of his shift. No one would fault Orion for simply heading home after a job well done, but the small Pokémon shelter in the lower district is on the way to his favourite teleportation spot and he's taken a liking to the group of Spoink sheltered there. He's been given a key by the owner, with invitation to stop by at any time of day to check on them and how they're doing with their adoptive pearls.

He doesn't expect any trouble, but the light flickering in the windows is an automatic cause for suspicion. He slips a hand toward his radio, speaking softly so as not to raise any alarms if there is anyone inside.

"Dispatch, this is Lykos outside of the Lower District Pokémon Shelter. Got some suspicious activity inside; I'm going to check it out. If you don't hear from me in five, send back-up. Over."

He unlocks the door, steps inside, and finds himself face to face with two people who definitely shouldn't be there. One of them, the blond, stirs a sense of familiarity he can't yet place.

Altair, always at his side, growls low in his throat and tenses up, ready to DETECT any threat toward Orion.

Metal fingers curl around a pokeball at his belt.

"Step away from the Spoink, and put down the pearls."

Greed is a powerful motivator, and one he himself has come to know all too well. He does not chide Sienna Bell for her greed, but he does raise a brow just as he picks up another one of the Spoink.

”All pokémon exist for the glory of Team Rocket.” He tells her, the ILLUSION seeming to even alter his voice. Any hint of the man known as Martín del Mar is gone, especially as he plucks the pearl from the poor Bounce Pokémon as if it were the simplest thing in the world. ”But, we can discuss additional payment once the job is done. If you earn it.”

There’s a wink, and when the Spoink is set back down, it's so weak that it barely bounces anymore. Psychic type expert as Mars is, he knows that this is bad news for the small pokémon – it could die if it stops bouncing. Does that bother him? Not at all.

What does bother him, however, is having his work suddenly interrupted by an obnoxious ranger.

That is, of course, until he recognizes the man that suddenly steps into the pokémon shelter.
[break][break]
”Oh, S, looks like tonight is our lucky night. Former Councilman Orion Lykos in the flesh…” A wicked smile flashes under fluorescent lights, eyes as if aquamarines narrowing when falling upon the ranger’s prosthetic. ”...and steel.”

The pearl is tossed towards his Delibird, and he picks up another Spoink then – unbothered.

”Back to the ranger life, hm? Night shifts? A cadet, of all things? Oh, how the mighty fall. Pitiful.”
[break][break]
Another pearl is plucked, just as more than half of them have been, and when it's tossed, Tuesday also tosses a Luxury Ball from which a large Electivire is released. The Thunderbolt Pokémon stands between them and the ranger.

thus spoke zarathustra. no just desserts until they actually did their job there. how terribly boring.[break][break]

the cloaked fatale sighed but relented. no sense in arguing against a man with enough power to send her to the stocks. though the pearls allured her so gently, microcosms of beauty and grace, sienna did reluctantly part with them. in the delibird's bag they went, one-by-one tumbling into a microdimension of glittering gold and riches. how dearly she wished to dive in after them, to salvage the riches that should have invariably gone into her own pockets, but no such incompetence clouded her mind. instead, she turned to look at tuesday, ruby red lips curved upwards into a sly grin. though she had put on the guise of scarlett, she was still sienna to the core—greedy, certainly, but never far from her own humor.[break][break]

"not to worry, my love. i'll earn it."[break][break]

she was tearing another pearl from the clutches of a sleeping spoink when a raven-haired stranger broke into the shelter. flickering fluorescent lights from overhead flooded his visage with sickly green illumination and glinted off his arm's pristine titanium plates. he barked an order, accompanied by an eagle-eyed absol, but tuesday didn't budge, so sienna didn't, either. her eyes, dark as sin, raked up the officer and then down in one fell swoop. derision clung to her tongue as she laughed.[break][break]

"former councilman, hmm?" she purred. she didn't spare him even a glance. her eyes locked on her reflection held suspended on the surface of the pearl she had just harvested, and she carefully wiped away a portion of out-of-place eyeliner with the edge of her sharp red talon. "i can see why. you don't have the presence, my friend. don't even have enough for pig work, either."[break][break]

she threw the pearl away into the delibird's bag. as her hand lifted back up, she tapped a Pokeball on her belt loop, and her slimy black salazzle flooded from its container in a dizzying flash of light. "pretty depressing existence, if you ask me." she smiled like a leopard before pouncing. "why don't you go play in the pigpen? we've got this covered."

Emerald eyes narrow at the insults, anger bubbling in his blood. But he smiles, a sharp thing edged of malice.

"Thank you," he snarls, as he releases his Silvally from the confines of its capsule, "for giving me an excuse."

See, he's sworn not to pick fights with Rocket. But if they picked a fight with him? He was going to finish it.

He ignores Sienna Bell entirely; he wasn't a cop, so her insults didn't slice nearly as deep as those leveled by Martín del Mar. It's the blond known as Tuesday on whom the ranger focuses his ire.

Silvally sets up a HEAL BLOCK immediately upon its paws touching the ground, and shadows coalesce around Orion's titanium prosthetic as the Rotom within begins to form a NASTY PLOT. His Absol crouches, growling, SWORDS DANCE sharpening its horn.

”Oh, terrifying.” Sarcasm drips from every syllable, coming in compliment of the smirk that is flashed the ranger’s way. There isn’t even a hint of concern, because why in the world would he ever be concerned? Silvally can be annoying to deal with, yes, but it’s not like he has any intention of actually aiming deal with their intruder.

The mission always comes first for him, no matter how fun a battle can sometimes be.

”Finish grabbing the pearls. I’ll deal with our friend.”

Hold him back, mostly. Until it’s time for them to leave. But, while he’s at it, why not savour it?

A click of his tongue serves as a command, and the huge Electivire aims a CROSS CHOP for the Absol that is likely the ranger’s most loyal companion (based on the fact that it had already been by his side).

”You know, I gotta hand it to you, figured you would’ve learned your lesson and be begging for your life at this point… Or, is it that you’re so sad and pathetic that you have some kind of death wish? That's kind of adorable. Pitiful, but adorable.”

He smiles, and it’s then that he releases a Talonflame that charges with a STEEL WING straight towards the Silvally.
