Since Ned was a boy, he had dreamed of conquering the Pokemon League and ascending to the rank of Champion. Age sixteen with eight badges in hand, the fruits of his ambitions were growing ripe. His journey had just circled back to his hometown of Viridian City when Team Rocket's invasion began. Having conquered the gyms of Kanto, Ned knew that not many could stand against him. He held nothing back as he fought alongside other trainers and their pokemon, desperately shouting attack commands as civilians cowered and ran. Cries and screams rang amidst the roar of gunfire and explosions. One by one, Ned recalled his defeated pokemon to their capsules in the desperate fight against Team Rocket's forces. His optimism gradually drained from him as he quickly found himself unable to protect his friends and family from the chaos. Grunts advanced on them from all sides, and the brave trainers could not hold their own against the relentless onslaught. With his friends and family all captured or dead, and his own defeat otherwise certain, he looked to the sky. Tears welling in his eyes, Ned mounted his charizard, and took flight. His heart raced and his head pounded as they climbed higher above Viridian City. As far as he could see, all of Kanto was burning.[break][break]

He headed west until his charizard could fly no more. He landed somewhere in the foothills and hiked onward, praying to whatever god might hear him that Johto would be safe. But he and his team were ill-prepared to face the harsh conditions of Mt. Silver, and the elements took their bitter toll. By the time Ned reached Tohjo Falls, all but one of his pokemon were dead. Emaciated in body, mind, and spirit, he hardly made it as far as the suburban outskirts of New Bark Town when he collapsed face-first in the dirt. When he awoke in the hospital the next day, he was informed that his charizard had not survived the internal bleeding. In that bed, he swore to himself that he would find revenge against Team Rocket. Determined to become as strong as possible, he resigned himself to the mountains of Johto, where he has lived a spartan and largely hermitic lifestyle for roughly four years, training for the day he takes revenge against Team Rocket.[break][break]
