Kanto had long since been taken, and word was that Hoenn was Team Rocket's next target. But from what Ned had learned, a resistance was growing, and he held every intent to contribute whatever he could. He took a ferry to Cianwood, and there he managed to find some fishermen headed south. They agreed to drop him off when they stopped at Dewford, in exchange for what little money he could scrape out of his pockets.[break]

Penniless at the docks, Ned headed away from town towards the caves without so much as a thought. He had well since learned to sustain himself on the fat of the land, and there was much more for him to be found in the wilds than in this shanty beach town, pretty though it may be.[break]

As Ned stepped towards the gaping entrance, he heard distant cry of a zubat echoed through the cave.[break]

"Rats with wings, truly they are," he said, out loud. Years of solitude had instilled in him a nasty habit of talking to himself.[break]

He sighed, and continued into darkness.

Ned slowed his pace as he descended deeper into the dim, gaping cavern. Gradually and carefully, he advanced along the increasingly rough cave floor. Ned did not know for what he was searching, but he always knew it when he had found it.[break]

Ned found himself at a three-pronged fork, and followed the leftmost path. He walked up a steep rise, rounded a corner, and followed the light of day pouring in from a gaping hole further up.[break]
[break]
"Now this is interesting," he said to himself.[break]
[break]
He stepped out into a wide rocky pit surrounded by steep walls, and squinted as his eyes readjusted to the sun, while a massive copperajah rose to its feet, raised its trunk to the sky, and bellowed at him.[break]
[break]
"Steel-type," he said to himself with a smirk. He reached for his Sahara's pokeball.[break]
[break]
His tyranitar materialized before him, and roared with all her might.[break]
[break]
"Earthquake!"[break]
[break]
Sahara invoked her attack, and the ground shifted and shook all around. The copperajah stumbled back as a blast of earth erupted beneath its feet. It collected itself, and charged forth in an attack technique that Ned definitively recognized as strength. The tyranitar crossed her arms and braced herself and tanked the blow with her feet planted firm.[break]

"Fire fang!"[break]
[break]
Flames filled Sahara's mouth, and she lunged forth. The elephant pokemon cried out in pain as the tyranitar sank her searing hot fangs into its soft metallic skin. The copperajah quickly returned with a rock smash attack that sent Ned's pokemon stumbling back.[break]

The trainer gritted his teeth. "Fighting-type," he said, bitterly.[break]
[break]
"Earthquake! Don't let up!"[break]
[break]
Once again the earth erupted, and the copperajah reeled back. Ned could plainly see that it would not take much more.[break]
[break]
"Stone edge!"[break]
[break]
A pillar of solid rock shot up from the ground, but the elephant pokemon managed to shatter it with another rock smash. It charged towards Sahara, ready to strike back again. The trainer expanded a vacant pokeball to full size, and hurled it forth. The device made contact with its target, and in a flash of light, the copperajah was encapsulated. Ned held his breath as the pokeball hit the ground and began to shake.
