The gym's main clearing is a hub of activity, pokemon skittering about and chirping at one another as they all crowd around a lone figure. She greets each visitor with a quiet smile, nodding in acknowledgement of the items they might drop in her hands or the words that her Rotom helps translate.[break][break]

"Okay... keep checking the town and report anything weird. Don't get in trouble though." As she pockets a rock from one of the Chatots, she gives him a little boost back into the air and watches as the group take off towards the skies. It is only when the Luxray by her side growls that she turns her attention from the pokemon to the approaching stranger, emerald eyes taking in their silhouette as she lets her hands drop to her sides.[break][break]

"Hello there, traveller. Were you perhaps here to challenge the gym?"

Oh man! The little gymleader was some twerp! This had to be easy! With a smug smile on her face, Miranda stepped forward, her gaze falling on the girl before they drifted back to her nails as she looked at them from various angles. "Yeah, yeah, I'm like... here for the badge." she rudely muttered, clearly disinterested, as if she had already won her battle. "So like, how do we do this? Like, do we just fight?" Mirana pulled her lollipop out of her mouth, pointing it in the direction of the small 'creature'.

"Or are you just the assistant or something." half-hooded eyes looked around the place for somebody who could pass off as the gym leader. "Are you the gym leader?" there was just no way, the brat looked way too small. Girls her age were better off playing make-believe games with her friends at a playground than dealing with animals.

This couldn't possibly be right, she was expecting some fat nerd, not a tiny girl. "Wait, you're not some lost kid are ya? Cause like, I don't have time to waste kid."

Pride is a monster that lurks in the shadows, invisible to the hunter that unknowingly feeds it. Rosmontis barely bats an eye at the attitude simply oozing from the newest challenger, merely turning her attention back to the pokemon and dismissing them with a wave.[break][break]

"I'm Rosmontis Lune, gym leader of Eden's Grotto. You're not the first to assume otherwise, miranda walker." Her volume is even as she climbs onto her Luxray and gestures for the other to follow. "And in a sense, yeah we do just fight. But with a few special conditions to test your ability to adapt to the situation, mainly whether you can use you environment to your advantage."[break][break]

It's a short walk - Perhaps, a little shorter than usual considering how quickly Reiner moves - but they soon make it to a forested clearing, enclosed by giant trees looming overhead. Nearby, water cascades down a mossy waterfall, travelling further downstream as it caresses the lurking bodies of shadowy fishes. Large boulders litter the battlegrounds, deep gashes left behind by many previous challengers that she's faced.[break][break]

With a quick hop off of Reiner and a pat on the shoulders, Rosmontis takes her side of the field. Then she calls upon a Salamence, doing a few little hops to calm her nerves before calling out to Miranda.[break][break]

"If you have places to be, you can feel free to call upon your pokemon and take the first move."

"Okay, Lune it is. The name's Miranda." it was like the words sailed over her head, the older girl was even tapping at her phone as she was talking, clearly more interested in the news feed she was getting than the freaking battle that was about to commence. "Environment, wait, dude I didn't study for a test. I dunno all these things about, using the environment and stuff. Can we like, just get to the action?" Miranda followed the little girl's footsteps and it certainly didn't take her long to reach that

"Yeah, sure." the girl twirls her lollipop whilst keeping it in her mouth, her words slurred by the melting candy as she picks up her pokeball and tosses it on the grass. Brilliant crimson light erupts from the tip of that ball and a vaguely humanoid shape comes out of it. "Gengar, like go do stuff."

When her pokemon looked at her in confusion, she blinked and turned her gaze towards the gym leader. "Yo, like... my Pokemon isn't moving." she told the other trainer in a blatant show of her ignorance. "Like, I thought they just did things automatically?"

"I'm pretty sure I fed Gengar." she added hastily, to at least reassure the other person that she was a human being. Just not a very good one by most standards. "Is it broken?" she asked Lune, eyes growing wide.

Though her life has been pretty short compared to many others, Rosmontis has seen many things from the unexplainable to the unimaginable. Underground monsters, legendary battles, trips to other dimensions... And life still has so much more to show her, like how miranda walker seems to be incapable of directing her pokemon?[break][break]

There is a brief moment of confusion that flickers through her expressions, one that's swept away as she waves a hand to the Salamence. With that simple gesture, Teostra starts things off with a Flamethrower, searing hot fires dancing across the fields right for the Gengar.[break][break]

"Have you... never fought a battle with him?" She squints, watching for how the Gengar reacts to the stimulus. "You can't be serious."

"What?" Miranda blinked at the question, but she went to her phone, tapping the buttons as her Gengar seemed to be running away for dear life, avoiding - or at least trying to avoid - the stream of fire that was coming its way. "I haven't, I just like, was told it would do things on its own."

"Oh wait, my Gengar is a guy? I actually wasn't sure, I guess you gym leaders know your stuff huh."

The Gengar actually left the fighting area, it probably meant the the duel was over - at least unless Miranda could pull out her other pokemon. "So like, can you tell me how I'm supposed to use Gengar?" there was a certain level of competency a trainer should have, but if there was a scale from one to ten, Miranda was probably going to dip into the negatives with just how crass, careless and ignorant she was proving herself to be.

"I have another Pokemon." she said, holding up a spare pokeball. "I dunno how to take it out though, I think there might be a password on this." or was there? Probably not, but Miranda would much rather let people figure things out for her than have her commit to putting effort into doing so. "Here." she tossed the spare Pokeball to Lune. "Can you check what's going on for me?"

The Gengar... actually fled from battle. Traditionally, she would have told them that they were disqualified and proceeded to show them the way out but part of her honestly wants to see how far this challenger can go. In which direction? She won't quite specify what she's hoping for. All she can do is raise a brow as Miranda asks how she's meant to use Gengar.[break][break]

"Your disinterest is one of the reasons why Gengar is unable to act." Plain and simple, her gaze focuses on the phone in her hands. "Since you've never battled with him before, he's unsure of what actions to take when facing an opponent. And if I'm to be truthful here, the fact that you don't know what he's able to do is somewhat horrifying. Are you really gonna be okay for when the meteor hits Hoenn?"[break][break]

Going down the list of do's and don'ts with regards to the whole life-threatening situation looming on the horizon, miranda walker hovers closer and closer to the category of people that won't survive. Teostra seems disgruntled by the way his opponent simply ran off, claws slamming against a boulder as he throws a tantrum in the corner. Thankfully, Reiner is there to keep him under watch, his tail flicking as he stares at the Gengar from time to time.[break][break]

"And no, pokeballs don't have passwords. Have you really never just tried tossing it up?" More questions brew in Rosmontis' mind, but one possibility makes it extra clear as to why she might be having such a problem. And she squints, catching the ball and holding it for a second as she pops the million-dollar question. "Do you even know what pokemon resides in this?"

"Meteor? What do you mean meteor?" this was news to Miranda, ever since she had been kicked out of her house she couldn't be arsed to think of reading the news. Her world was revolving exclusively on making sure she got back to her proper place in her family, whatever happened to other people was a distant second or third in her book. "That sounds ridiculous! Why would a meteor fall on Hoenn!" the girl looked at the tiny little twerp and she laughed, cradling her stomach, eyes growing misty at the notion of a meteor crashing.

Except the kid didn't seem to change her expression. "Wait, wait, what?"

"You can't be serious! Like, an extinction level event meteor? Are you sure you just didn't watch some movie? Like, Meteors are ridiculous, they burn up in re-entry." if anything, what was surprising there was that Miranda had some clue of how celestial bodies worked and that happened to comets crashing through the atmosphere.

Miranda tried thinking about her options, but she felt a migraine forming. "Stupid effin' brother... meteor... jeeze as if I didn't have enough on my plate." she groaned at the idea. "You know what, if I die, I die. Like I'm screwed enough as is anyway."

"No, no I haven't." she said. "I was worried it'd run out of batteries if I did."

"I dunno, like, I saw it before. I just dunno its name." Miranda tried to remember some details, it was taking awhile but after mulling it over, a light flickered in her thoughts. "It has a triangle-shaped head, a lizard body and it floats."

"Firstly, the pokeballs don't ever run out of whatever energy they run on. So toss it up all you want to call out your pokemon or just hold onto it so they return. Since you aren't that sure on how they operate, I'll give you some advice. If you manage to befriend a wild pokemon or basically fight them until they concede, you can throw an empty pokeball right at them to catch them." And judging by the way she had showed up to Eden's Grotto without a clue of how this world worked... "If you catch more wild or strong pokemon, maybe train them up a little, you can form a rather good team to challenge other gyms."[break][break]

Tossing the pokeball up, Rosmontis watches as the described pokemon appears in a flash of red.[break][break]

"Secondly, this pokemon is called a Dragapult. It's a dragon and ghost type, which means that it can't be harmed by normal or fighting type moves. For example... don't worry too much, Dragapult." She calls up a Cinccino and gives a whistle. Though confused, Latte obeys and attacks the dragon with a Tail Slap, only to slip through harmlessly. "Think of it like... you can't exactly punch ghosts. Most gym leaders have workarounds though."

“This kind of sucks, why would people even raise a barrier to keep us here if there’s a meteor coming our way.” then again, some people did have a death-wish and enjoyed making trouble for other people. Miranda might have been the sort that caused people grief, but she wasn’t the kind of person that took joy from doing it.

“Sootopolis, huh?” she took out her phone, writing down the word and tacking on the additional notice that it was dangerous to go there. “I guess that’ll have to enough, right?” she said, shrugging as things

"Geeze, that sounds like a real pain in the ass." she muttered, scratching the back of her head. She was really just over this crap, why did she have to care about a pokemon’s feelings? “Dealing with people is difficult enough as is and I have to get on a pokemon’s good side?” she hung her head a low groan leaving her lips.

“Okay, I guess this is kinda cool.” she said, looking at how that pokemon’s attacks was largely ineffective against her own. “But knowing that makes me think it was a waste of time coming here.” she’d approach the girl waiting for her to hand over the ball just so she could try putting it back inside. “So that’s how it works.”

“I guess I’ll have to chalk this up to a loss.” Miranda said as she pocketed her second pokemon. “I know this is probably pointless to ask at this point, but is there any way you’re going to be willing to cut me some slack and just give me a win?”
