they had made a sizable dent in the wild pokemon population thus far. but cait doubted they'd be able to do anything about how quickly some of the pokemon - the electric-types in particular - were reproducing and replenishing their lost numbers. there were far too many nooks and crannies in new mauville to make the task of 'culling' the problem easy. 

'they just keep coming,' she thought, exasperated.

cait had participated in chasing off a good number of the pests - but it still wasn't enough.   
"grum."

her grumpig's nostrils flared as she took stock of the lengthy stretch of hall they had just entered, the psychic-type likely trying to sniff out any pokemon who might be tucked out of sight. 

"it's wonder the lighting works around here," cait remarked, her voice barely above a whisper. "you'd think the wires would be completely fried by now."

the gym leader peeked into a room, groped for the light switch and flicked it on.

klefki weren't necessarily an issue. they were considered an uncommon and timid lot - so cait mulled over whether she should leave it be instead of engaging it. 

'and if memory serves they don't breed often.'

such a curious creature was also indubitably small and lacked the potential for becoming overly destructive. 

"right."

grumpig glanced at her mistress as she sighed out the acknowledgement. 

"let's check the other rooms, girl." 

the tiny pokemon fled and cait continued onward with her search. her psychic-type trailed behind her as she walked, pausing on occasion as her ears perked up and her gaze flitted to and fro.

the manetric committed to a charge the moment it had alfric within its sights. there was an excess amount of energy that sparked across its limber form as it sought to close the distance, its fangs bared as it released a terrible noise. 

"grumpig!"

her pokemon promptly situated herself before her mistress, the psychic-type preforming an elaborate jig. the dance resulted in the pokemon's eyes - once clear - becoming increasingly hazy and dazed. the teeter dance was a successful one, the manetric effectively rendered confused. 

"power gem." 

the manetric was sent sprawling as the rock-type and energy-based move was launched, the creature struggling to return to its paws immediately afterward. 

"keep it up, girl," she encouraged. 

after a mostly one-sided confrontation the electric-type fled, pitched yips reverberating all of the duty corridor as it fled.

cait had checked room after room, the surprisingly intact pieces of furniture and complicated machinery appearing to be covered in thick of layers of dust upon first glance. it also reeked of decay and rust wherever she went, though natural waste also added onto the unpleasant scents which had been allowed to accumulate and stagnate in excess. 

'definitely not jealous of the cleaning crews who have to come down here. let's just hope they're getting paid well.' 

she dodged the clumps of waste gathered here and there, careful to avoid smearing her tennis shoes with the disgusting substance. cait already had to deal with it on a daily basis since her pokemon were allowed to freely roam within the confines of her gym. 

'makes for good fertilizer, though.'

cait blinked as she detected a noise that originated from a room she had only just passed. she backtracked for the sole purpose of satiating her curiosity and investigating its source. once again - she groped from a light switch - her grumpig hovering close by and suspiciously squinting her eyes into the thick darkness of the room. 

"...!"

it was a raichu - and a large one at that. it stared at her and cait stared back, their eyes rounding slightly in alarm as they faced one another. the gym leader's eyes soon settled upon its tail, the woman managing to easily identify its sex as she noted the cropped tip. 

"don't chase this one off," cait instructed, her voice low. 

her grumpig blinked and then nodded her head in acknowledgement before stepping forward. the chubby beast preformed a dance immediately after, her teeter dance succeeding in rendering the electric-type confused. 

"that'll work." 

the pokemon stumbled and bumped into a nearby table before toppling over completely. once it collapsed onto its belly and struggled to return to its face cait retrieved an empty capsule and gave it a toss.
