At the western edge of Petalburg City lies a beautiful neighbourhood. The sight of the tall trees in the nearby forest can be seen peeking amongst houses, and when the breeze rises in the afternoon, it carries the distinct brine of the ocean.

On this particular afternoon, children fill the streets, dressed in all sorts of costumes. They go from house to house, requesting sweet treats, and when knocking on one particular door, they’re greeted by a blonde man dressed as a ranger cadet.

He smiles, doing as they request, and by his side, the Riolu that wears a ranger beret stares up at them. Its eyes are bright yellow, and unlike its trainer, it doesn’t look particularly friendly.

[attr="class","skullbody"]There was something so satisfying about doing smuggling work right under the League's noses. But doing it while dressed as one of their own? Oh, exquisite~.[break][break]

It was the kind of audacity you could only get away with if you were the best there was at what you did. Isaac wasn't quite at that level. However, on Halloween, you could get away with a lot more than you usually could. People dressed as Rangers and went trick-or-treating all the time. Who were they to suspect Isaac?[break][break]

Sometimes being a short guy with youthful features paid off. Clad in the outfit of an elite ranger that he'd tactically made a touch too big for him, Isaac looked more like a smart-aleck teen than he did an inexplicable trick or treating adult. He'd hit up just enough houses to avoid looking suspicious, and a few extra because shut up, candy's delicious.[break][break]

Those were diversions, though. The real prize was the house just ahead of him, where he'd be having a little rendezvous with a fellow "Ranger." One might as well have said that the Rangers were Rising! He headed up to the front door, giving it a quick, casual rap with his knuckles.[break][break]

Was there any sweeter treat than playing a trick on the League?

To be entirely honest, the only reason why the ranger uniforms had been chosen had been because it’s an incredibly common Halloween costume. The idea had occurred to Mars after running into kyle lopez at the central mall, but while the Champion had clearly borrowed some ranger’s actual uniform, the one worn by this particular Petalburg home owner is obviously a poor replica bought at a store. The top portion of it is no more than a t-shirt and a thin jacket (with cadet’s red armband, of course), and as should only be expected, the shirt is one size too small, making it just tight enough to show the signs of what must be rigorous workout schedule.

It’s what anyone would expect from a Halloween costume.

When opening the door to be greeted by the sight of a fellow ranger, the blond laughs.

”Oh wow, look at you… an Elite! Should I be saluting you or something?” He smiles, cheerful as ever, all while the beret-wearing Riolu by his side simply looks up at the “stranger”. The man reaches into the candy bowl by his side then, retrieving some perfectly round candies in purple and gold wrappers. ”Some special ones for my fellow ranger.”

[attr="class","skullbody"]So this was the Civilian Mars. Compared to how all business he was when they trained together, this Mars was surprisingly jovial. And surprisingly ripped. Sheesh. Isaac'd tell him to put a shirt on, but he was pretty sure the shirt was only making him stronger.[break][break]

"That's right, Rookie," Isaac teased, drinking in the little bit of a power rush that came from someone so high on Rocket's totem pole saying that to him. "Atten-tion!" He saluted Mars with a big, goofy grin on his face. The oversized uniform only made his enthusiasm look more adorable.[break][break]

The purple and gold wrappers looked like they would have been delicious in any other circumstances. Yet, in this circumstance, they looked even tastier. Isaac held one up to the light, squinting a little as he appraised it.[break][break]

"Huh! Aren't these a treat," Isaac said. "Never seen this brand before. What flavor are they?"[break][break]

Okay. Seeing Mars figure out how to translate different kinds of Pokemon into flavors may have been worth the price of admission here.

While Isaac makes an enthusiastic attempt at standing at attention, giving a bright smile and a rigid salute, the one he receives in response is casual, nonchalant, and playful. There’s an air of ease to the man dressed as a ranger cadet, almost as if to him all of this were as natural as breathing is. Charisma, maybe.

Charisma, wit, and incredible acting skills.

To the point that, when Isaac Merlo tries to be cheeky and ask a question, the man who often goes by Tuesday does not look surprised at all, nor does he miss a beat.

”Neat, aren’t they? They’re pretty rare. Between you and I, kinda a pain to get. There’s a bunch of flavours… Butterscotch, chocolate filled with ganache, lum berry, pinap, lansat, salac, hondew, colbur… You know how it goes.”

There’s a knowing wink and a smile, and he sure doesn’t bother with explaining the code to Isaac. After all, it wouldn’t be a useful code if he did as much in the middle of a mission, no?

What he did need to know was was that there was a wide variety of goods being smuggled here, able to help a wide variety of Rockets with a wide variety of Pokemon. Life was like a box of chocolates; you never knew what you were going to get.[break][break]

"Love me a good variety platter," Isaac said, returning the knowing smile. "Don't worry. These babies aren't going to rest. I'll make sure to savor them for a long, long time." Candy was dandy, but diamonds were forever. And these were arguably a stone even more precious.[break][break]

From behind Isaac's leg, Watson emerged. Painted up red and wearing a pair of shades, he looked for all the world like a teeny-tiny Krookodile. He rasped cheerfully at Mars and his Riolu, then shook a hollow plastic Pumpkaboo expectantly.

"Don't mind Watson's enthusiasm," Isaac said. "His palate's not as fancy as mine." Also, if he was given any of these precious treasures, he'd probably end up eating them by accident. The last thing Isaac wanted was for this smuggling run to end on the operating table.[break][break]

"How has the night been treating you, by the by? See any other Rangers running around?"

”Ah, a mighty Krookodile!” The man exclaims when seeing Isaac’s “disguised” Totodile appear from behind him, shaking its plastic Pumpkaboo. The Riolu isn’t nearly as impressed, but then again, Ajax is a precocious little brat who seems to think all of those things are just too good for him. It’s not like he can be blamed, though. After all, Mars is one hell of a strict trainer.

Thankfully for the tiny “Krookodile”, while the candy given to its trainer is far from what it seems to be, there are actual candies meant for all the children who have knocked on this door today – along with treats for their pokémon as well.

Even though Isaac says not to mind the pokémon, the blond crouches down, offering it a delicious rage candy bar.
[break][break]
”Here.”
[break][break]
Another one is offered to his own Riolu, petting it a couple of times before answering the question just asked:

”Saw a couple, actually. Patrols and what not, you know? You’ll totally run into them if you go that way.” Once standing, he vaguely gestures towards the forest. "Bet they'd love to meet an Elite."

Actual rangers. Patrolling. After all: the primal point isn’t far from here.

The message is clear: it would be in Isaac’s best interest to avoid them.

[attr="class","skullbody"]Watson's eyes lit up as he saw one of Johto's most delicious exports dropped into his grubby little hands. This was a precious treat. A rare treat. A treat he may never get his hands on again. Watson knew exactly what he had to do as this handsome stranger gave him his prize.[break][break]

He threw it right into his mouth, foil and all, and started to chow down.[break][break]

Isaac sighed in fond exasperation. "See what I mean?" he said, scrambling in front of Watson to try and fish the foil out of his mouth. Amazingly enough, his hand wasn't shredded into ribbons in the process. "C'mon, Watson. Out with it already. We talked about this!"[break][break]

Finally, the foil was secured, wadded up into a ball and banished to the shadow realm of Isaac's pocket. That freed Isaac up to hear Mars' far more pertinent advice; there were Rangers patrolling the woods nearby, and they needed to be kept far, far away from the payload. "Ah, they've got enough on their plate running night patrol. Don't need the big boss breathing down their necks on top of that," Isaac said, waving the idea away. "But, hey. If I bump into 'em, I'll be sure to say hey."[break][break]

"I guess I gotta be going soon. But, c'mon. I know the neighborhood talks." A little bit of mischief sparked in Isaac's eyes. "Any other houses packing some good candy this year? Or is this the best me and Watson are gonna get our hands on?"[break][break]

The night was still young. And wasn't there always work to be done?

Like trainer, like pokémon. Is that not what people say? It sure seems to be true when it comes to the measure of enthusiasm between Isaac Merlo and his Totodile – as if they had been made to be companions. It’s while letting out a light chuckle that Mars watches the scene, silently hoping that Isaac doesn’t also eat with wrappers included.

However, even while in the most jovial of moods, Mars doesn’t tease the disguised associate with jokes like these. They’re not friends. They will never be friends. A sense of familiarity is not something he cares for allowing to develop.

This is work, and to him, work always goes above all.

Thus, the response given is only what’s pertinent to their job for the night, spoken with smile:
