Since his move out to Evergrande for training, Wren had taken to exploring the island in his down time. Whenever able, really. Even the places down deep below the calm ocean's surface. Which was why he found himself out at the Seafloor Cavern, wandering the damp caves with his politoed and vaporeon alongside him. Though Grover stuck beside him, Jupiter was having a great time of it - fishing shellder out hidden corners and toying with them with a feline sort of fascination.[break][break]

Eventually, he'd call the vaporeon back and they'd move along. It was quiet, the sound of dripping water echoing through the hollow caves. If there were any others way down here, he'd yet to find them.

With such a limited team and directly proportional options, you might be wondering, how the hell did Fox get all the way out here?

The answer is never to underestimate the power of smugglers, insurgents, and thieves. A ‘borrowed’ boat did wonders for short-term sea travel.

The caves smelled like wet sand and rock salt and the sea. It reminded him of Vermillion City in equal parts: the beautiful part, before Rocket, and the bitter part, after rocket, where hiding under docks to sabotage weapons cargo and launch attacks on admins entering the region became commonplace.

It was a strange sort of nostalgia, the art of remembering war.

He comes around a corner, drawing a hand on the dripping limestone, and finds another human being. His body immediately goes into fight mode, but this isn’t his first goat rodeo, and his expression stays genial if a bit tense.

“Hunting for old pirate treasure, too?” he asks, voice carried by the dampness of the air, as Phage hovers above his right shoulder, burbling his own, single-cellular greeting at the stranger.

Something captures his vaporeon’s attention, and before Wren can hail him back, he’s sticking his snout into a deep puddle under a large overhang. A bruxish snaps out with its sharp teeth, warning the vaporeon for having drawn too close in his nosiness. Jupiter retaliates a bright ray of AURORA BEAM, though the prismatic hues are still paler than the fish’s bright scales.[break][break]

Before it can retaliate, Wren snares it with a pokeball. “That’ll teach you to not stick your nose where you shouldn’t,” he says lightly as Jupiter scampers back with wounded pride.[break][break]

Then a voice rings out from behind him, and Wren can’t help the way he jumps a bit, shoulders hiking up to his ears. Too focused on catching the bruxish and chiding his instigative pokemon, he didn’t hear the echoing footsteps of the other individual.[break][break]

But? For some reason the voice sinks in as somewhat familiar, though he’s never heard it in person before.[break][break]

Curious, Wren turns. “Hunting for anything, rea– oh!” His eyes widen, enthusiasm and familiarity brightening his features. “I follow your socials!” With the sort of zeal befitting a botany student interested in environmental things. And also cutie patootie pokemon. “I really enjoy your page.”[break][break]

Dial it back, nerd.[break][break]

Fox graces the stranger with a genuine grin-- a rarity, especially in these dark days. “It’s always nice to meet a fan,” he says, mockingly brushing imaginary dirt off his shoulder.

He had started posting content for his own mental sanity, way back when. Something small and good in his life when everything was big and bad. He’d never imagined for it to take off.

“What’s your poison, the vegan stuff or the cute Pokemon?” he asked, as Phage floated forward to burble excitedly. As his cutest Pokemon (or so Phage would claim) the Duosion won the award for the most amount of time spent in Fox’s videos.

So in Phage’s mind, the stranger was his fan.

Wren smiles widely when he’s not shrugged off for his eager greeting. There’s a smile that crosses Fox’s own face as he makes a joking remark that does well to settle some of the, frankly, starstruck nerves that he suddenly feels. “I’m sure it’s definitely an experience!” Maybe a little surreal, in a way?[break][break]

As the other’s duosion floats forward, Wren’s face only brightens further. “Hello! I sure recognize you! Of course!” he coos at the Pokémon, hands out and open for him. His eyes drift back to Fox for a moment. “Both, actually! I’m not fully vegan, though I try to balance my diet more. Your tips on that have helped a lot!”[break][break]

A lileep slinks out toward Wren’s politoed, looking to WRAP Grover up in its hold. Wren whistles to grab the politoed’s attention, and before it can get him, he pulls up the earth around the other Pokémon, uprooting it with EARTH POWER.

Phage burbles happily, semi-permeable membrane rolling around him like a cloud. Fox tuts and waves the little vesicle away. “Yes, everybody loves you. Now shoo. You’re hogging the spotlight.” It’s said in jest. What he really wants is for Phage to go spook out some Pokemon-- what with having to leave most of his team behind, he’s sorely lacking in power at the moment.

“I’ll tell you a terrible secret: I’m not fully vegan either.” It’s why there was a serious lack of omnivore bashing on his socials. “But! Awareness in what you’re putting into your body is the key. Cruelty-free and sustainably sou-- blah, sorry, I’ve been in front of the webcam too long.”

He holds out his hand.

“Nice to officially meet you. I’m Fox.”

Phage gives a high-pitched water-droplet sounding noise as he’s startled up an angry Blastoise from somewhere deeper in the caves. As the Duosion comes screaming across between Fox and Wren, Olera bursts from within her Pokeball. She spits sleep powder right in the Blastoise’s face and it falls, skidding to a stop on its belly shell, snoring.

“Never a dull moment,” he says to Wren with a grin.

The clearly pleased demeanor of the duosion makes him giggle, shoulders hiking up as Phage rolls around his face. “He’s got a big personality for a lil guy,” he remarks as Phage floats away in search of other creatures.[break][break]

“Oh yeah?” Wren’s eyes go round, “well that’s a relief!” His head tilts in amusement, another easy laugh bubbling up. “You’re right, though. Webcam or not.”[break][break]

Wren takes the offered hand in an enthusiastic shake, “Likewise! I’m Wren.” Okay, so maybe he’s a little starstruck and shakes the other’s hand a bit longer than necessary. This ends though, when Phage comes rocketing back toward them and he’s properly distracted.[break][break]

The blastoise that lumbers after the duosion is brought down with relative ease–which makes the mantyke that floats by seem like easy pickings when Jupiter shoots another ray of AURORA BEAM at the water-type. It tries to angle away, but a shift in the vaporeon’s angle sends it tumbling straight into the ball Wren’ tosses at it.[break][break]

“Nothing wrong with that!” Wren says as he laughs. “If things were dull, I’d be bored all the time.”

Fox rolls his eyes affectionately. “You have no idea.” He leans in close and cups a hand over his mouth, whispering conspiratorily, “I’ll be honest, dinnae e'en ken if he has a brain.”

Phage did not hear the slander and instead has wandered off and found a friend-- a little Bonsly. The shy Pokemon hides behind a small rock; Phage burbles at it encouragingly until it comes out, and leads it over to Fox’s feet.

“So, Wren,” Fox says, stooping to pick up the baby rock-tree, “what’re you in for? Thrills? Adventure? Rare Pokemon?” He lifts the Bonsly and makes an overdramatic groaning noise as he hoists it to his hip.

“Awww, it must be in there somewhere,” he says with a bubble of laughter. The bonsly is, like, super adorable, but a bubbling sound is quick to distract him.[break][break]

A large, blue monster of a fish rises up out of a pond. It really doesn’t look like much more of a puddle, but it must go deeper down than he assumes. “Woah! What is that?” Wren scoots closer, eyes wide. “Tag team it!” His politoed shuffles forward, the spiral on its belly twisting to put the dondozo into a HYPNOTIC slumber as Jupiter smacks it with another AURORA BEAM before Wren chances throwing out a pokeball.[break][break]

“Sorry!” Wren chirps as he turns back toward his newfound companion, “that was a little distracting!” He’s more than a little flighty, unfortunately. “I’m just exploring, really! I’m a ranger in the area, so I’m trying to get a little more familiar with it all.[break][break]

He gives Jupiter a pat on the head as he returns to Wren’s side. “How ‘bout you?”

Looking for all the world like a middle-aged dad with a toddler, Fox hugs the Bonsly closer to his hip as he and Wren turn to face their newest opponent. “I’ve no idea,” he admits, cocking his head and squinting at the… the… “Whiscash on steroids?”

Wren’s team makes quick work of the strange creature.

“I’m considering a new PokeTok series,” Fox says, gesturing at the grandness of the caverns around them, “about the hidden, beautiful locations around the region, and eco-friendly tourism.”

He had, actually, been looking for a way under the dome-- or secret Rocket bases. But Wren didn’t need to know that.

A curious Spheal roll-roll-rolls right into Olera, who immediately angers. Fox tosses a Pokeball to save its life before she can blow it to kingdom come with a moonblast at point-blank range.

“Besides our strange catfish friend, have you found anything interesting?”
