Normally, light filtering through the window meant that the curtains weren’t pulled shut the way he liked them in the morning. Which would be cause for grumbly complaint. But when he woefully peeled his heavy eyes open, everything was different outside than it had been the night before. New and strange. his eyes snapped open, suddenly much more alert. [break][break]

Lam tripped as he scrambled to move from the bed to the window too quickly. He thudded to the floor with a loud thunk and accompanying OOF. Limbs flailed as he twisted to push himself back up and he sort of weirdly gremlin crawled to let his fingers curl around the windowsill and then his palms pressed flat against the pane as he pushed himself back up to his knees.[break][break]

The glass was cold. His breath fogged it over and he had to frantically wipe it away so that he could continue watching the downward drift of fat, pristine snowflakes. “IKARUS!” he shouted— which was something likely jarring given his typical morning disposition. He was never that alert under most circumstances, so if he’d stopped to consider, it probably sounded like he was calling for help when coupled with the crashing sound of his fall.[break][break]

The hardwood floors of their crummy apartment were not soft, after all. And the space rug…only covered so much space, even in the cramped little bedroom. The bed almost took up all of the floorspace anyway, so he was kinda lucky he didn’t bust his nose or burn his face on the warm, metal radiator.[break][break]

He wasn’t thinking about any of that, of course. Or the fact that he’d startled both Artie and Noodle where they’d been nested up in an unused sherpa blanket at the edge of the bed. This was too monumental. What Rook would find upon entry was Lam, still looking out the window, wide-eyed with a childish sort of glee. Face now hovering so close that the reddened tip of his nose touched

Rook usually woke well before Lam managed to crawl his way out of the cave of wonders. It was no different that morning as he slipped free, carefully without waking the other (he'd learned his lesson). It wasn't until he'd walked to the front, started the coffee drip, and peered out the window — that he belatedly realized that it was snowing. He had yet to see a real substantial snow in Hoenn.[break][break]
Wait a minute — He gasped, remembered the first date he'd had with Lam. The other had told him he'd never seen snow. He felt something giddy bubble up and he turned on his slipper-clad heels.

Then, he remembered his innate fear of calling Lam forth from the depth of sleep. Was it possible the other wouldn't blame him if snow was involved? Possible. Did he want to bet on that? Mmmmmmm, no. No he didn't. Okay, he could wait, right?

So, he sat down at the kitchen table, patiently sipping at his cup of coffee. Rosie was staring out the window, looking forlorn. The cold made her mask damp, which she didn't enjoy. Plus she got lost in the snow, which was frightening. In all likelihood, she'd choose not to go out until the white hellscape had melted away.

He heard the crash first and nearly spit up his coffee, it burned his throat on the way down. Then, followed the shout for his name. It hadn't occurred to him that Lam would simply be excited. Knocking his knee against the table, he rushed into the other room only to find the other peering out the window like a little kid on a snow day. He felt a little dumb, in hindsight, of course that was what it was. "put on something warm, it's cold outside."

At the sound of Rook’s voice, Lam finally swiveled away from the window, face lit up in a stupidly wide grin. The tip of his nose had gone rosy from being pressed against the cold glass where his hands still remained. “It’s snowing!” he stated the obvious, not caring that that made him a bit redundant. It was exciting.[break][break]

Then the meaning of what his boyfriend had said finally registered. Okay, so maybe his brain wasn’t fully awake just yet. He was still getting there. But that didn’t make him any less excited. Scrambling up, he moved toward the closet, its door already left open from the night before. On the way, though, he stopped to give Rook a good morning peck on the lips– was that jarring? To see him so chipper that early? (Early for him.)[break][break]

“How warm? How cold? Multiple sweatshirts? I dunno.” He whirled around, long sleeve shirt half-pulled on, and his hands caught before they reached the sleeve cuffs. “Rook! I don’t have a winter coat!” he cried, half of the alarmed declaration muffled before his head poked through the neck of the shirt, green birdsnest hair frizzing up further with static.[break][break]

A hoodie followed, and pants and some sneakers. Those would have to cut it. He didn’t have heavy boots either. Or gloves?? Lam was not prepared for snow. But he did at least have a gray beanie that he could pull down over his ears. “Coffee?”

Lam was actually cheery this morning, without tea or coffee to wake him from the dead. It was a little unexpected as Lam rushed past him, stopping to plant a kiss on his lips. "Oh. Good morning to you too." He chuckled, realizing he probably should wear his thicker socks. His boyfriend, of course, was not at all prepared for this kind of weather. It was to be expected, they'd yet to plan for it. Rook had been planning on getting him something warm for Christmas, but the frigid weather beat him to it.

"Pretty warm. Gloves and socks are essential because fingers and toes get cold the fastest. You can use my warm jacket." Rook pilfered through the sock drawer before finding two relatively thick pairs of socks for the both of them. His jacket was an easy find, hanging on the inside of the door.

They had a pair of leather gloves and some cotton, which would have to work. He wasn't actually prepared either, now that he thought about it. Lam was practically buzzing out of his skin, ready to go outside. "Yeah, it's made." Rook actually found himself rushing to keep up. If only the other could wake from sleep like this normally, but that wasn't likely to last. It was probably a one-day affair and then Lam would officially be over the snow and the cold again.

"Wait," He rubbed Lam's nose with a gloved hand before leaning forward to kiss it. "Cant have that falling off from the cold. Okay, ready? Probably best to wear the non-holy sneakers, yeah?" He would grab a cup of coffee on the way for the other. It was cute, reminding him of how snow days were for him as a kid. Trying to stop this sailing ship from careening out into the cold, well he didn't make for much of an iceberg.

"Okay okay, let's go. Afterwards, can get some hot cocoa."

“Right, got it!” It was all so new and fascinating. And also a helluva lot of effort just to stay warm, so it was very probable that the novelty was going to wear off real fast for him. At the offering of the other’s coat. He frowned as he took it when it was handed over to him. “Are…you sure? Don’t you need a coat?” Maybe more so because Rook was so much thinner and lankier than Lam was.[break][break]

He took the free pair of gloves from Rook once he’d pulled the warm socks up over his feet. All of his motions were quick and peppy, and yeah, this was definitely never going to happen again in the morning. But it was a nice surprise for his boyfriend to be greeted with, yeah? For just one morning, pre-caffeine Lam wasn’t a total monster to deal with.[break][breal]

“Huh? For what?” he turned around to face Rook again, only to be met with the rub of fabric against his nose. It tickled, threatening to make him sneeze.[break][break]

The kiss left on his nose made it instantly wrinkle up. Grinning, Lam grabbed Rook by the front of his sweater before he could fully move away and planted another kiss on his lips. A touch more enthusiastic than the light peck from before. “Yeup, now I’m ready.” He shuffled to the door and looked down at the mat of shoes. “Do I got any without holes?” He tender to wear them down to nothing before getting anything new.[break][break]

Finding the most intact pair, he pulled them on, then hopped back up to receive the travel mug of coffee, holding it between both palms and lifting it so that the steam rose and warmed his face. “Thanks! That sounds good, let’s go, let’s gooooo.” He could barely contain himself to wait for Rook to put his shoes on before he was grabbing the other by the hand to pull him out the door, down the flight of stairs and out into the snowy cityscape.

They were out into the snow in no time. The warmth of their shared space was left behind, replaced by the deep chill of the winter atmosphere. At first it was a little like jumping into cold water, but almost immediately he settled into it quite easily. He'd always enjoyed the cold, for some reason. Though he'd never met another person that liked the cold the same way he did.

He was certain that if he looked deep enough, he'd probably find some psychological reasoning for it like all of his other weird quirks, but that diminished the mystery and the feeling of strength that came with braving something that most other people hated. He liked things that required some adversity, from pokemon to weather. Though, his boyfriend was about as far from adversity as he could get, which was probably good. Lam was calm and cool and collected, the definition of confident in his book. Even if Lam didn't always agree. Still, that was super attractive to him. The same way it was to see Lam's eyes light up with the snow.

Of course, the thrill would dissipate quickly and Lam would get over the delight of snow, but for now Rook would admire the childlike excitement of it.

Rook sipped at his coffee, letting it warm him before releasing Lam's hand to scoop at some snow. "I used to like eating snow as a kid. Weirdly tasty. If it's yellow though, it's not lemon-flavored." He laughed at that.

[attr="class","star2"]Of course the first thing he registered was the chill—both in the air and in the snow itself. His excitement powered him through it, but even still they were only a few feet out the door when he tensed up, walking stiffly as if he’d already frozen through.[break][break]

He huddled closer to Rook. Even with his boyfriend’s coat on, he wasn’t used to this low dip in the temperature. It was a wonder that somehow it didn’t seem to bother Rook.[break][break]

Lam’s nose wrinkled, “Why would you eat it?” It didn’t seem very filling. Even as he asked, though, he tipped his head back and opened his mouth to catch snowflakes on his tongue. At the mention of yellow snow, though, his expression twisted in distaste again. “Did you learn that the hard way?”[break][break]

Setting down his coffee cup, and lodging it in the snow, Lam bent to scoop a bunch up and then just…threw it. Up into the air even though it was still snowing in and of itself. It was just so light and fluffy.[break][break]

But yeah…cold.[break][break]

Shivering, he scooped his cup back up and held it between his hands hoping that the steam rising out of the hole in the lid would warm his face back up. “It’s so pretty, why does it gotta be so freezing?” A fact he would sulk over for days to come. Reaching over, he shook the other’s arm lightly, “How are you not cold?” he whined, then promptly shoved his frozen nose against the crook of Rook’s neck.

Seeing Lam step out into the snow, Rook couldn't help himself. He laughed. It was awkward, immediate tenseness at the cold on his skin. Such a summer child, unfamiliar to the winter. It wasn't laughing at him though, he told himself. Maybe. Okay, maybe he wasn't being a very good or considerate boyfriend right then, but Lam seemed to be at least enjoying the first time experience. It was like a child waking up on a snow day, knowing school was canceled and wonderland existed outside.

Rook remembered how that feeling was, even if staying home from school used to fill him with equal dread. It was nice now, like he was reliving his childhood in a more blissful way. Just another example of Lam lightening his life.

"I don't know, its weirdly kind of tasty? Try it." He dipped a hand into the layer of snow, perfectly white and crisp and took a bite. It wasn't yummy so much as a sensory thing? Maybe? It was odd to explain. "Oh no, it's more of a... saying? I'm not sure, but I knew someone who did thinking it was lemon flavored." Apparently, it hadn't been lemon-flavored.

"Not sure, but that's kind of the novelty of it. Used to get so excited by snow, even if no one else really was so.." He shrugged at the thought, leaning into the other. The warmth of his breath and the cold of his nose was a strange combination. What a baby. He liked it though.

"Oh, hold this." Rook said, handing his coffee over before plopping down without warning onto his back. Swinging his arms and legs out, he stood back up. "Snow angel."

[attr="class","star2"]Lam whirled around, nearly skidding and slipping in the frosty snow as Rook laughed. A falsely indignant scoff followed, mouth hanging open as he gawked at his boyfriend for daring to laugh at his excitement. Not that he was really cross, though. He knew it was probably a funny sight to see a fully grown adult acting like a tiny kid playing in the snow for the first time ever.[break][break]

So he got a pass that time.[break][break]

He didn’t understand, but he took Rook’s word for it. Leaning away slightly, his head tipped back—tongue sticking out to catch some snowflakes on his tongue. They melted instantly, but it was still somehow thrilling. “Wow, it’s so neat.” It might’ve sounded like sarcasm, but it wasn’t. Not at all.[break][break]

“That’s pretty cute though. I would’ve liked to see you as a kid getting amped up for it.” Rook didn’t seem like he had anything like childhood photos or videos, though. Which was sort of unfortunate, really. Lam wagered he was probably mad adorable.[break][break]

“Okay.” He took the second cup gladly because it was a means to warm both hands at once. All too quickly the gloves he’d put on cut through with cold, numbing his fingertips…yuck. He was getting tired of that real quick. He watched on with wide eyes as Rook plopped himself down in the snow. “You’re gonna get snow down your shir— oh. I see it.”[break][break]

He laughed as he looked down at the shape, then held out the cups for his boyfriend to take. Much more gingerly, he dropped down and mimicked the action. A slow giggle rolled from the pit of his stomach, but soon he was shivering because, yes, snow did slide down the back of his coat collar.[break][break]

He pulled himself up and huddled back up to Rook before looking down. “Brr. Did I do it right?” His teeth chattered as he asked, tiredness slowly seeping back in now that immediate excitement wore off. Lam took his coffee back and drank to stave off the feeling. And the cold.

Rosie was watching from the front stoop, looking a little miserable in the cold. Her disguise would get wet and she hated that so he didn't force her to endure with the rest of them. It was nice enough that Lam was enthusiastic for the moment, though Rook could foresee that willingness ending relatively soon. Snow was always a short-lived excitement. The second the cold seeped through your gloves, the fun was all downhill from there.

Granted, that never meant all that much to Rook who endured regardless of the cold. He'd spent most of childhood outdoors regardless of the weather. Even if it was just to hang under the carport playing with his pokemon. It hadn't been exactly exciting, but he'd made do with it all.

"Yeah that's okay though." He said while shaking dramatically until snow pelted off of him. His skin shivered as cold flecks touched his bare skin. He looked back down at his snow angel, realizing that nothing so ugly could ever be mistaken for angelic but it was still fun. It was even more fun than he remembered, probably because he was with someone who enjoyed being around him. Then again, it was quickly realized that snow was less fun as an adult.

"It's too bad you didn't have snow when you were younger. I think every kid needs a snow day in their memories, but maybe this'll make up for that." He had half the mind to toss a snowball at his face, but took the offered mugs and laughed as Lam mimicked him. "Hey, yours is prettier than mine."

He could see Lam already shivering, "You know the best part of the cold is going back in to a fireplace. We have a tv and a heater so practically the same thing."
