he struggles with the lock for what is perhaps too long. by the time they let him out of that jail cell (which is, perhaps, an exaggeration from the truth), all he could think about is getting home that he hadn't even thought about what he was supposed to do. his hypno teleports him luckily right in front of their apartment door, but what is not lucky is how the numbers blur together before he clumsily is able to hit the enter key.

Well, he came in would insinuate more of an approach under his own power. Honestly, it was more like he fell in, like one does into love, or a Discord chat.

Sy was an emergency trainer volunteer lifeguard and just a man of action-based reflexes in general. He was at Caden’s side in a second, gently shifting him so he wasn’t face down without moving him too much.

There was… a lot.

“C-can you hear me, Caden?” he asked, reaching for his wrist to check his pulse.

Vermillion floats downstairs to see what the hubbub is and shrieks, horrified-- not because of Caden but because the door is open and the unnatural winter chill is a threat to her small army of houseplants. A sweet-scented aromatherapy-- mint and eucalyptus-- blows down the stairs and shuts the door with a slam.

“I hope you’re conscious, for your sake,” his voice is quiet, the humor present, but strained. “She does a pretty good impression of smelling salts and, woo, it is not pleasant.”

he falls.

[break][break] but instead of falling face-first into carpet, he falls face-first into... his roommate's rock-hard abs.

[break][break] caden grunts, as he's flipped over. his head is still foggy, his thoughts dazed. but not in the post-coital bliss that he's used to enjoying, or the smug, post-surgery high that he's always craved. it's only after there is a painful shriek from that awful vivillion that he winces, flinching at the sound, grunting as he's brought back to the mortal coil.

[break][break] "i'm... alive," he mutters with a groan. "barely."

[break][break] it's fucking lucky that his roommate is an emergency trainer slash lifeguard slash incredibly hot and useful person. he would prefer not be dead on the spot.

[break][break] in his roommate's arms, caden is the opposite of everything he's ever been around him. normally, he's poised and confident, dressed to the nines in gorgeous silk or branded shirts. even his white coat for work is polished to perfection. but here, tonight, his face is beaten raw and bruises bloom on his gaunt cheekbones, his skin paler and sicker than it ever should be.

“You look like shit, my guy,” Sy says, aware he’s stating the obvious, but he’s smiling because Caden is awake, at least.

Verm putzes around them and titters, noticing, now, Caden’s condition and oohing and aahing in her little Comfey voice. Her aromatherapy continues to cascade around them, taking on a warmer note: cocoa and cinnamon, noting her concern.

“Can I carry you to the couch? Or would that hurt you too much?”

The petulance in Caden’s voice is laughed off as Sy scoops him up and carefully maneuvers him to the couch. Stretching his legs long across the cushions, he holds his upper half raised for a moment to stack two pillows behind him, before gently setting him back.

Sy drags a fuzzy purple throw blanket over Caden and heads to the kitchen for an ice pack, or several.

“Do you want water? Or… a beer?”

the rumble of laughter that echoes in symon blessing's chest makes him shift, gripping tighter to the other's bicep. it's comforting. the familiarity of it all.

[break][break] caden would've been more petulant if he could. he hated being taken care of, hated being dolled around even more. but there was really no choice, and even if he didn't admit it, he was glad for his roommate's help. he groans as he leans back against the couch cushions, his head spinning.

He finds a bag of frozen peas and squishes it a bit to soften it up. He wraps it in a thin towel and grabs a bottle of water, bringing these both to the couch. Setting the water bottle on a coaster stolen from a restaurant, he hands Caden the bag of peas, then heads up the stairs.

A few moments later he comes back with a little orange Rx bottle. He uncaps and shifts the little oblong tablets into his hand, and sets them next to the water.

“These are oxy’s, from my sports days.”

he wants to let out a sharp laugh at his roommate's humor, but instead pain gurgles in his throat and he finds himself sinking back into the couch cushion.

[break][break] when he opens them again, his very-handsome roommate is back.

[break][break] "my savior," he says as he struggles himself upright, throwing the pills in his mouth and the chugging down the water. the flush into his systems is cool and immediate, even if the pain still rings in his head from before. hopefully it'll kick in soon.

[break][break] after a minute, he says the one word he thought he'd never say:
