Nikolaj Volosenkov

For Nikolaj, I primarily drew inspiration from TOM STALLS of the 2005 film A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE, BRYAN MILLS of the 2008 film TAKEN, and JOHN WICK from the 2014 film of the same name. The main connection these characters have is their retirement from a previous life of professional and extreme violence. As a result, Nikolaj's defining tropes are The Mafiya and Retired Monster, with an added layer of Papa Wolf.

MOTIVATIONS

FAMILY: Nikolaj's family is the most important thing in his life. Everything he has ever done — including quitting Team Rocket — was for their sake. He loves his family dearly and will stop at nothing to protect them, even at the cost of his own life.

MONEY: The Volosenkovs are not exactly living in the lap of luxury. In fact, they chose to live in Oldale Town not only because of the serenity and solitude the countryside had to offer, but because the cost of living there is relatively low compared to other towns and cities in Hoenn. Nikolaj and his family make enough money to get by, but he's always open to opportunities to make life a bit more comfortable for them.

SECRECY: In his retirement, Nikolaj has shut the door on his past. He refuses to speak about what he did before moving to Hoenn, even with his own children. For all intents and purposes, Nikolaj and his family simply showed up one day and have silently contributed to the community of Oldale Town without fuss or incident.
