Though Fayne did enjoy her time in the lab, hunched over a microscope while studying how blood samples responded to radioactive stimuli or observing how different species reacted to the introduction of evolution stones in a controlled environment, it didn't scratch that inch for exploration she'd had since she was a child. There were so many questions that could only be answered through strict scientific research.

[break][break]But despite this fact, Fayne always felt some thrill in getting her hands dirty and doing field work. Certainly it would be more productive to hire a team to do excavations and captures for her, but a small part of her loved having the opportunity to get some fresh air. Plus, there was always a sense of pride that came from finding a buried evolution stone or capturing a new research subject.

[break][break]It was during one of these ventures to Mount Chimney that Fayne would experience her first distortion in space-time. Clad in hiking gear and fitting with an explorer's pack, she was busy scouring a section of the mountainside for a rumored vein of fire stones when the sky crackled with energy. Silvery green eyes turned upward in time to see the atmosphere waver with temporal energy before the surrounding area was cast in darkness.

There it was! The grand distortion! Her sources had been right. The odd lightning seen the day before had now given rise to a proper rift in space and time, sending ripples through the fabric of the universe! Or something like that. Honestly, she no longer gave that much of a toss about the way this all worked. Just as long as she could get there in time and hopefully take back the years lost, she would be happy.

And thus, she was rushing towards the mountain, her Lycanroc bursting through the forest, breaking branches and trampling grass and mushrooms, as uncaring about what that did to the place as she was. Following its trainers wishes, it was single-minded to get up there, even as it reached the foot of the mountain. From there, things switched – but only in the sense that the Pokemon no longer made long strides trying to cover as much ground as possible.
Instead, it started to climb upwards, jumping from ledge to ledge, prompting its rider to hold on tighter. It was a bit dangerous, but Lash could manage. At the very least, she could do that much in this body. Even if holding on was not exactly a grand ambition.

Still, they rose – until Lyconroc did suddenly have to stop after jumping up a ledge, into the dark, skidding to a halt just so it would not crash right into a person it had not been able to see until it was almost too late.

It took the better part of a minute for Fayne's eyes to finally adjust to the lighting — or lack thereof. She hadn't been cast into pitch blackness, but the sudden shift from day to night was something unexpected for both her body and mind to comprehend. At first, she was convinced that she had been teleported by a Pokemon; however, a quick look around disproved that theory, for the landscape looked identical to the one she'd been standing in before the shift occurred.

[break][break]Perhaps something had blotted out the sun, casting the land in a veil of darkness. That also didn't seem to be the case — not on a global scale, at least. Not only was Fayne unable to see the sun, but she was unable to see the sky or even the distant horizon. It almost appeared as though she was caught under some kind of energized dome. "Curious," the researcher muttered to herself before kneeling down and unzipping her backpack.

[break][break]As she reached into the bag, Fayne spotted movement in her peripheral vision, just beyond a cluster of nearby rocks. This made sense. A change in the atmosphere would no doubt upset the local wildlife, sending most running for cover. She'd probably see a lot of movement as a result of the rift's appearance. For this reason, she felt no need to look up or pay attention to her surroundings while retrieving the hand-held Geiger Counter from her bag. Unfortunately for Fayne, that had given the enraged Annihilape plenty of time to locate her.

[break][break]It was only out of sheer luck that she happened to look up and spot the grey-pelted monkey as it leapt off a rock with the intent to strike her with a well-placed punch. With a yip of surprise, she scrambled to her feet and ran a few paces away, narrowly running into a girl and her Lycanroc as she did. "Oh, thank Arceus!" she exhaled upon spotting the backup. "I really hope your Lycanroc knows how to fight," she mumbled while turning around to face the Annihilape that stood before both trainers.

Huh. A civilian in need. Rangers would have a field day with that, Lash thought to herself, as she habitually dismounted her Lycanroc when she noticed the pursuer. Betraying her current appearance, she certainly moved with an amount of fluidity indicating experience. Or maybe it just seemed that way.

Still though, a dangerous wild Pokemon simply meant that one had to prepare for a fight. That was it alright. Any member of the primeape family was to be taken as a dangerous individual anyway, so she took no chances. “Rock Slide it right away. Don’t pursue if it retreats, prepare for it going after you,” she ordered her Pokemon, which obeyed and summoned forth some rocks to throw at the other. Best to probe it from a distance, see if it left. No point fighting this thing. Potentially, this was a distortion to the past and this one was already dead.

The young woman, meanwhile, dusted off her skirt before looking towards the stranger who had thanked Arceus. Even though she clearly should thank Lash instead. Arceus was no true god, for if he was, he was responsible for her current predicament and therefore a jerk. “We can fight. It should focus on Lycanroc, at least for now. You alright?” Not that she truly cared. But they were here now, so why not?

Fayne watched in silence as the girl commanded the Lycanroc with masterful precision. Not only was the child quick and clear with her commands, but the stony canine was obedient and well-trained. The duo had a synchronicity that Fayne had only ever seen in adult trainers, ones who had spent countless hours working alongside a Pokemon partner. It was unusual to see a prepubescent girl with such fluidity and confidence in battle.

[break][break]To make matters even more bizarre, the girl dusted off her skirt and struck up a casual conversation while her Lycanroc dealt with the Annihilape. Why wasn't the child freaking out about the dangerous ape? Did she not care for the Lycanroc's well-being or was she really that confident in its abilities? And why wasn't she worried about the strange, energized dome that trapped them? Why was she acting like things were completely normal?

[break][break]Fayne felt off-kilter, like she was being pranked and hadn't been let in on the joke. Something was odd about the situation she found herself in, and not just because the entire atmosphere had changed in the blink of an eye, but because this child was not acting like she believed a child should in this situation. Heck, even she was having a difficult time keeping her head, and she was an adult.

[break][break]Despite all the confusion and uneasiness, Fayne kept her eyes glued on the battle transpiring before her, never daring look away for fear of being struck while her guard was down. Instead, she ignored the girl's question and took an instinctive step forward, putting herself between the young trainer and the dueling Pokemon. "Stay back. You'll be okay," Fayne said while resting her hand on the pokeball belt around her waist. She was ready to defend what she believed was a helpless girl if the Lycanroc failed in its efforts.
