Another loud screeching, wailing noise came from the Wingull as the diminutive little Pidove lashed out again with the same force as a dragon would—

Both of the opponents on the opposite side of the field were equally dangerous, however which posed the worst threat?

All the while the Wingull was falling, the small, sparkly bird flapped his wings in one last desperate Air Cutter move—but not aimed at the Pidove, he was going for the golden-colored Shinx!

A second loud buzzing noise came from the Yanma as he zipped around, almost at max velocity and releasing a Bug Buzzing noise, the screeching wings rubbing together in such a way that the sound would hopefully disorient both Pokémon as the Thunder Wave clipped one side of its wings.

Uh-oh.

Yanma and Wingull are out on the field!

Wingull gets clobbered hard by the Dragon Hammer attack, however before crashing to the ground pivots mid-air and aims an Air Cutter attack towards the Shinx!

Yanma, on the other hand, released a Bug Buzz around the area before getting clipped by the Thunder Wave!

The air cutter aimed at the shinx caught him off guard. Slashes of air hurtled at Noodle and bowled him over, sending him in a barrel roll a few paces across the field.[break][break]

Meanwhile, Poppy followed through after her initial impact, continuing to pursue the wingull downward and pulling up at the last moment as her wings drummed up a RAZOR WIND aimed at the wingull’s glimmering back.[break][break]

Lam’s attention darted between the two— the pidove curving back into the air to redirect her offense wherever he would call her to. The shinx shaking himself out as he righted himself in the wake of the air cutter.[break][break]

Then the pitched bug buzzing began again. Eager to be rid of it, Noodle let loose a bolt of THUNDER at the yanma, as it tilted in the air from the feline’s prior attack. Up in the air near the bug, Poppy wasn’t so lucky.[break][break]

The shrill sound sent her careening away, fluttering in frantic circles as the sound made static noise of her concentration, and leaving her open.

Never mind if he had a split-second warning to brace himself as the sibilant noise split the air, the Yanma’s shrieking, buzzing noise from earlier was proving to be effective—even if the flight pattern was somewhat starting to list.

“Get ‘em!” he encouraged both his valiant fighters; however he knew that something had to give between them, the way that they were going back and forth between this volley of attacks.

Just before the sparkling Wingull would hit the ground, a beam of red light saved him from becoming a gull pancake (and angering the entire peanut gallery watching the insanity), which left the Yanma out on the field…

One on two, what were the odds? He knew that they had to level the battle ground, though—

The Yanma then made like a madman, zipping past, too close and narrowly avoiding the bolt of lightning as he chased down the Pidove, spreading the thin wings wide in a Steel Wing attack, hoping to knock the other bird out of the sky as well!

Yanma ~~and Wingull~~ is out on the field!

Wingull is knocked out, and recalled! Yanma narrowly avoided the Thunder attack, before closing the distance on the Pidove and using a close-range Steel Wing to catch the other bird off-guard!

Lam watched as the wingull fell— “Keep it up!” he encouraged the pair, though he didn’t want to rest on his laurels quite yet. And for good reason, it turned out.[break][break]

“Poppy, recoup!” It’s a directive that fell short, though. As the pidove attempted to flutter out of range, the yanma caught up with her. A sharp smack from steel wings sent the already disoriented bird hurtling downward before she had the chance to successfully ROOST.[break][break]

Lam grit his teeth at the poor timing. Now, at least, he knew to regain health sooner rather than later in the future. Like the Fortree gym leader, he recalled Poppy before she could hit the ground with finality. In a red beam of light, she too disappeared from the field.[break][break]

They were still in this, though![break][break]

Noodle took the opportunity, darting forward again in an attempt to catch up with the yanma before it pulled up too high in the sky after its last attack. Leaping up, the shinx swiped his little paws as more electricity rolled off his body and shot straight at its buggy body in a powerful WILD CHARGE.

Now that the field was a one-on-one, it was only a matter of time before someone between the two of them budged, however he was sure his Yanma wasn’t going to give up the ghost despite flying lopsided in mid-air.

He knew he was pushing his luck, however who was he to deny his Pokémon the chance of a lifetime to prove themselves? By then the crazy flock of Pelipper had dispersed back to the trees they called ‘home’ somewhere on the Sanctuary grounds, and it was just them now—him, the challenger Lam, and their two remaining Pokémon on the arena.

The shiny Shinx was now trying to get airborne with the incoming Wild Charge, however with an attack as powerful as that charging head-on into it was enough to be considered as ‘game over’, what other choice was there—

He grit his teeth as he felt the grating Buzzing noise coming from the Bug/Flying-type Pokémon echo in the space all around them.

Somehow, he knew that somewhere, one of them had to give as the Yanma stared down the incoming Shinx with a determined glare as it rocketed closer toward him.

Yanma is out on the field!

~~we’re in the endgame now~~

Yanma released another Bug Buzz attack, all the while staring down the incoming Shinx and the Wild Charge attack!

Who was gonna give first? That was the question. He had to hand it to Alexei’s yanma—it was plenty tough in the way that it refused to let up, even with its crooked flying![break][break]

“Don’t lose it!” It didn’t seem as if Noodle needed encouragement from Lam. The shinx, long frustrated by a litany of predominantly missed attacks, dug his heels in and continued to charge forward despite the wince of pain from the incessant buzzing that continued to ripple throughout the arena.[break][break]

Of his Pokémon, this one was probably his most stubborn—and Lam banked on that now. Even a little bit of power would do the trick in what looked like an inevitable crash course collision as the yanma doubled down with the same hurtling determination.[break][break]

The droning sound was sure to ring in even Lam’s ears hours after the battle had concluded. Along with the bright flare of light that burst from the golden shinx at the last possible moment before impact as he pulled down one more bolt of THUNDER from the sky above the open air arena.[break][break]

“Alright, bud… just a little bit longer,” he muttered, half to himself as he shielded his eyes from the brightness in the moments before it began to fade.

Due to the Yanma lasering in on the incoming Wild Charge attack, he’d barely noticed the incoming bolt of Thunder—however, Alexei did (and he’d even fished out a pair of shades and snapped them on just in time for the equivalent of three flash-bang grenades going off all at once) and he barely hid the cringe that crossed his features at the stubborn, persistent, airborne Shinx.

Before the Yanma could—well, a dead-square hit was most certainly enough to fry him, and the valiant dual-type would come falling out of the skies before a red beam of light saved him from becoming a squashed dragonfly pancake on the ground.

“Wow,” he began as he made his way across the arena towards Lam, “talk about incredibly stubborn!”

He whistled as he approached, already holding something small and cold in his hands.

“Were you around for the time people had to like, ring a bell at Meteor Falls and make some kind of wish? Because I’ve yet to encounter another Pokémon that knows Dragon Hammer asides from the one I taught that’s not an Alolan Exeggutor,” he cackled once he was close enough.

Man, that shiny Shinx really took one hell of a beating.

“We came down to the wire, literally, and it was your Shinx that came out on top,” he continued as he gestured for the other to hold out his hand.

“For showing charisma, uniqueness, a hell of a lot of nerve, and talent—you deserve this badge. Congratulations!”
