and in this instance, she's a little bitter she hadn't called for company.

no matter... she can do this.

people part to let the head scientist pass, careful of the bags she holds. well, except for one man.

he doesn't seem to move and he's blocking her path.

it's with a sigh that she pipes up from behind him, eyes already beginning to narrow slightly.

"hey, um, can i get past you please?"

So this was Felix Gallagher's newest fixation.[break][break]

More bookish than Malcolm had expected, truthfully, but that was a bit endearing in an annoying way. A Head Scientist and geneticist both was an impressive pedigree, and despite her momentary disarray, the fact that she had an appealing physique to match made Illeana seem... well, out of Felix's league, if Malcolm were to be quite honest.[break][break]

Although that had been in Sinnoh, and as Malcolm was learning, Hoenn was not one and the same as their home region.[break][break]

As the woman glared up at him, Malcolm met her with an easy charm, taking the brief window of opportunity to talk. He took a half-step to the side -- enough to make it seem as if he would let her pass, but enough to still inconvenience her.[break][break]

He needed her time, after all.[break][break]

"I apologize, I appear to be a bit lost," he said, meeting her gaze with an apologetic smile. "I was hoping to find someone, but am rather new to Lilycove City. I don't suppose you're a local?"

and her body picks up momentum as if she's about to leave... only to be stopped by the proximity of his shoulder colliding with hers.

ugh.

her nose scrunches in disdain before flattening out. the statement is distracting enough to stall her. she can't quite ignore the opportunity to help, can she?

"where are you trying to go?"

she shifts her bags almost impatiently. if he takes much longer, she'll shove her bags into his arms as payment for her niceties.

"i wouldn't really qualify as a local, but i've lived here three years now so i can take you wherever you need."

The fire in her voice surprised him faintly, but not in an unpleasant way. No, it delighted him, as evidenced by the way his smile widened.[break][break]

"I'm looking for a specific person, actually. A bit of a celebrity in the area, as it happens."[break][break]

He reached into his pocket, bringing out an address written out in the scrawling penmanship of a receptionist in the League headquarters. His ice-blue eyes met hers as he allowed her time to study the paper.[break][break]

"The Head Scientist Illeana Reyes lives near here, I'm told. I couldn't manage to find her during office hours but, well. Who am I to interrupt her scientific research with a request for an interview?"[break][break]

she hadn't been expecting that.

her eyes are slow to blink surprise out of themselves.

"well, you found her."

she flashes a small smile.

"why an interview, though? aren't there bigger fish to fry?"

in her eyes, she's a small minnow in a sea of very large creatures. nothing interview worthy.

but... the bags on her arms are heavy and it could be easier to just walk and talk if he relieves some of the weight.

"i can give you a few minutes if you could help me carry things home?"

The smile he offers back was dazzling, feigned surprise lifting his eyebrows and widening his eyes.[break][break]

"Oh, are you really? What a small region Hoenn is."[break][break]

A rumbling laugh indicated his agreement as he shouldered her bags -- an amusingly gallant gesture, all things considered -- as he kept pace beside her.[break][break]

"I'm Hoenn's new regional director for RotomTV," he explained, his smile unwilling to abate even as the groceries weighed down on him. "With all that has occurred in Hoenn's recent history, it seemed like a good time to reestablish faith in the League. I'm thinking of a series showcasing the best and brightest it has to offer."[break][break]

Malcolm let a few moments pass before he continued to his next sentence, voice honeyed sweet as he turned to her.[break][break]

"Someone like you instills a lot of hope in people, Head Scientist Reyes."

she can't, however, help the little comment that escapes.

"you took over from ANA STONE ?"

it's all she says of the topic before it dies, crushed beneath a lofty statement and a charming sentiment.

she raises a hand to brush some bangs back behind her ear, the movement only a little uncomfortable.

"you're being very generous by saying such a thing, but thank you... it means a lot."

more than she realizes, perhaps, in a turbulent hoenn. after recent actions of her own doing have caused more rifts in her life than the meteor plan, to hear there's still some semblance of faith placed in her is a feeling she doesn't want to squander.

her head turns to glance at him, tilting expectantly.

"what would you like to showcase?"

He followed the Head Scientist without protest, at ease as he slowed his pace to match her own. Eyes darted about, looking for the woman's place of residence as they moved forward.[break][break]

"As for the focus, I believe that's entirely up to you. You're the specialist when it comes to your work, after all, not me."[break][break]

The attempt at humility was as much an attempt to draw out her own interests as anything else.
