El took in a deep, somewhat shaky, breath at Blackjack's praise and subsequent advice - their eyes briefly scanning the battlefield to try and take stock of everyone. Behemoth and Yggy both were engaging Ceres - which did leave Echo unoccupied, though they had figured that Echo would likely be distracted thinking Behemoth was chasing after, at least for a few moments... Though, the shimmer of psychic energy would suddenly catch El's eye!

They initially opened their mouth to warn the nidoking - but a bellow from Ceres interrupted them, and had their attention snapping away. The mankey part of their brain demanded to focus on the louder and more 'prevalent' attack coming Yggy's way - and El, perhaps a little flustered, would blurt "Y-Yggy!?"

Yggy, however, seemed to have this situation handled. Rather than try to match the charge head-on or dodge it, she would decide to just go with the flow instead! Namely, by using Crunch to try and latch onto one of Ceres' legs, and be carried along for the ride! It'd be a bumpy ride mind you - but she was going to be the most tenacious anklebiter that Ceres has ever seen!

Which, it certainly came as a relief to El that Yggy wouldn't need too much supervision - although as their attention snapped back to Behemoth, it was already a bit too late to warn him.

The Nidoking snarled and staggered as psychic energy jolted through him - though even if it left him hurting, he wasn't down for the count. His lips curled in a growl, as he turned his gaze onto Echo once more - You, his gaze seemed to say. Snorting, he'd charge at her on all fours - clearly going for as much agility as he could muster - and raising up one of his claws as he got close, he'd attempt to swipe at the Ralts with Poison Jab!

El, meanwhile, was visibly wincing - they had gotten a bit distracted, even if a good half of that was reflexes getting in the way. Which resulted in Behemoth getting hurt.

[attr="class","skullbody"]The distraction paid off big time. Primal . . . was fear really the right word? Or was it more a primal surprise? In either case, it grabbed El like a vice, stopping them from noticing Behemoth's peril. They called out to Yggy, and to their credit managed to snap the pugnacious Turtwig out of their battle focus.[break][break]

To both of their credits, they'd learned. Instead of trying to meet Ceres head on again, Yggy used their smaller size to duck beneath Ceres' shoulder. Rolling with the momentum, she grabbed onto Ceres' leg with a Crunch. Turtwigs were renowned for their strong grip, and that left Yggy more than capable of carrying herself along with Ceres' momentum.[break][break]

From here, Ceres honestly wasn't in a great position to fight back. Most of her attacks were best suited to a head-on assault, and her quadrupedal stature meant she couldn't really do much to just get Yggy off. Luckily, the best offense was sometimes a good defense. She slid to a halt, pulling her legs and head back into he shell for a classic Withdraw. How could Yggy stay clamped onto a limb if there was no limb to be clamped in the first place? With any luck, the Turtwig would be firmly yet peacefully pried off by Ceres' shell.[break][break]

Echo giggled, blowing a raspberry Behemoth's way. "Echo, no psychological warfare," Isaac chided, as if embarrassed by his childish antics. However, it was clear that they'd worked. Behemoth's attention was back on Echo, a full-fledged charge sending him barreling right towards Echo. The Ralts hopped back, one step, two steps, then leaped over Behemoth's back as his violet claws came lashing out.[break][break]

From up in the air, he spread his hands, a large orb of water gathering between them. This could be bad. Ground types hated Water moves. However, as a Ranger in training, El was surely familiar with the small batch of moves that Pokemon could use to heal instead of harm. Had they done their homework, the misty vapors and star-like sparkles gathered within the orb of Life Dew would be unmistakable.[break][break]

For the time being, Yggy was content to just gnaw on Ceres' leg - even as the torterra eventually came to a stop. This appeared to be working, after all! However, much to the turtwig's surprise, she'd suddenly find herself with no leg to gnaw on when Ceres withdrew into her shell! Pried off, Yggy would plop onto the ground with a surprised little squawk - though she was quick to get back up onto her feet. Okay, now what was this nonsense, her expression seemed to ask?

Initially, Yggdrasil would stay in place - as if puzzled at what, exactly, to do with this... But furrowing her brows, she'd decide to hop onto Ceres' shell itself - and attempted to start biting at it with Crunch! Did she hope that the defense-lowering properties of the attack would be enough to actually do something?

Meanwhile though, there was Echo - who was producing quite the orb of water. Though the sight initially gave Behemoth pause, El's eyes lit up upon seeing the Life Dew. Not only did their bookish nerdiness serve them well, but that was the same move one of their own pokemon had, as well! "Keep going, Behemoth!" They'd call, to try and encourage the nidoking onwards.

Which, that encouragement seemed to prompt recognition in Behemoth's own eyes, as he came to the same conclusion that El did. Without anything to fear, he'd attempt to leap for Echo once more with another Poison Jab - both to try and strike the ralts, and to try and make the Life Dew his own...!

[attr="class","skullbody"]Unfortunately, the large, sturdy shell just didn't give Yggy a lot of room to bite down. Had there still been a limb to adhere onto, or even Ceres' head or tail, the Turtwig would've easily been able to find purchase. However, in their current states, the process resembled a child trying to bite into a whole watermelon.[break][break]

Ceres' left legs slid out from her body, making contact with the ground. They pressed once, then twice, then finally sprang off of the ground with surprising force. She hurtled across the ground like a colossal Koopa, the spikes of her shell glowing a vibrant green. This blind-fired Wood Hammer was the strongest hit Ceres had broken out so far; look out, Yggy![break][break]

Behemoth did look out. With El's help, Behemoth looked out very effectively. The Nidoking hurtled forward, showing no fear in the face of a water type technique that wasn't actually water type. Echo tried to wiggle his body out of the way in midair, but was unable to find much purchase. The Nidoking smashed him right in the gut, slamming him back down to Earth.[break][break]

Unable to focus, the Life Dew popped like a bubble. Its mist wafted across the battlefield, giving all of the combatants some sorely needed pain relief instead of just Echo and Ceres.[break][break]

"Good catch on that fake-out," Isaac said. "Flinching away from what turned out to be a heal would've been a costly mistake." If Behemoth hadn't attacked, and none of the healing got stolen, it would've been twice the loss for El's team. "We've been battling for a while. Anything you're noticing so far?"[break][break]

As if to emphasize the point, Echo remained laying on the cold, hard ground. He looked for all the world like he'd been KO'd . . . that is, of course, except for the occasional fidgeting of his hands. Were El and Behemoth not careful, their past mistake would come back to haunt them. The second Behemoth's attention wavered, Echo would spring back onto his feet to launch another pulse of Psychic energy at his back.

Yggy made a frustrated noise as she kept trying - but failing - to dig her beak into the shell. Though it scraped a bit, she couldn't get any proper grip to really bite. This meant that she couldn't properly use Crunch against Ceres while the larger torterra was drawn into her shell like this... What could she do, instead? Well, she wouldn't have much of a chance to answer that question - as suddenly, she felt the shell shift and rock slightly beneath her. Confused, Yggy would glance over the edge to try and figure out what it was that was going on...

... Only to find herself squawking in alarm, when she was suddenly taken on a ride...!

Ceres careened across the cavern the fight was taking place in - with Yggy trying her damnedest to stay atop the shell. The turtwig initially grabbed onto Ceres' tree with her beak; not to attack, but to hang on for dear life! But despite that, she wouldn't be able to maintain that grip for long. At Ceres slamming into the first obstacle - be it a rock or a wall - Yggy would be sent flying with a drawn-out squeak! She'd reflexively use Withdraw to protect herself - as the built up inertia ultimately slammed her into a wall!

El couldn't help but wince, watching as Yggy tumbled to the ground - looking more than a little stunned. "You okay, Yggy??"

Thankfully, even if the turtwig was hurting before, the showering of Life Dew would help in matters. The sprinkles of sparkling water have her perking right back up, as she rocks onto her feet, raring to jump back into the fight!

Behemoth, meanwhile, snorts in satisfaction at the collapsed Echo beneath him. He rears up onto his hind legs, and puffs his chest, looking more than a little proud of himself for the act.

El, however, blinked a moment at Blackjack's words - namely, the question of what they noticed - and it was then that they'd scan over Ceres and Echo both. A twitch from the ralts grabbed their attention, however. Was that just a trick of the eye, or...? "Look closer, Behemoth!"

The Nidoking blinked, before glancing down at Echo. He glances the psychic-type up and down, before noticing another fidget - and his eyes narrow. To hit someone while they're down didn't seem all that fair to him - but if Echo truly wasn't down and out for the count, well... Snorting, he'd line up another Poison Jab at the ralts!

El, however, couldn't help but note something else. "... This is a test, but... These two, they could fight a lot harder than this if they wanted to, couldn't they?" They'd question Blackjack. Really, they weren't sure how to feel about it. Should they be annoyed, because it feels patronizing in the sense of Blackjack going easy on them? Or should they be thankful that they don't have to watch their pokemon get hurt and beat up in an actual fight? "And that isn't even getting into your other pokemon - who seem just as capable, if not moreso..."

[attr="class","skullbody"]Isaac hummed thoughtfully in the face of El's question. "They could fight harder if they wanted to," he said. "They could fight even harder if they needed to. But do fighting hard and fighting well mean the same thing?"[break][break]

"There was once a meeting between a warrior and soldier." The cadence in Isaac's voice was strangely familiar here, no matter how hard he tried to change it up. This was far from the first story he'd read for El. "The soldier wanted to learn the warrior's art, so he scaled the mountaintop to reach his inner sanctum. There, the warrior sat, surrounded by disciples and bearing a sword in his hand. In contrast to such a regal display, the soldier was but one lone man, armed with nothing but his worn, calloused hands."[break][break]

"The soldier demanded the warrior share his secrets, and to this, the warrior happily obliged. His one request was that the soldier meet him first in a contest of skill. Were he to snatch the stone from the warrior's palm, the soldier would be granted free access to his sanctum."[break][break]

"Before the warrior could even finish making his offer, the soldier had attacked. He lurked behind the warrior and choked him out, with every intent of ending his life had he not gotten what he wanted. And so, the warrior yielded, their contest lasting moments."[break][break]

"Does it sound like either man learned anything of worth from the other?"[break][break]

Was it a parable, a bedtime story derailed by an unhappy ending and a question looming overhead? Or was this the actual experience of two of Isaac's mentors meeting in the middle? The sheer disparity between 's encounter with and Isaac's later bout with the swordmaster still stuck out strongly in Isaac's mind.[break][break]

He wanted to teach like the warrior, not the soldier. knew what happened when the soldier tried to teach.[break][break]

Nonetheless, El's team was responding well to the teaching. Behemoth was becoming more focused, letting his rivalry bolster his awareness instead of cloud his judgment. Yggy, while still stubborn to the end, was getting more crestive in her technique instead of endless charges into direct clashes.[break][break]

That meant it was time to kick things up a notch.[break][break]

Ceres' large, shockproof body and reinforced shell let her easily bounce off of the wall. Seamlessly transitioning into this shifted momentum, she lowered her head and broke into a Headlong Charge. This time, there was far less breathing room between attacks. Was the dazed Yggy ready to keep up?[break][break]

Echo wished he could say the same, but unlike Ceres he was actually being pressured hard. He let out a distressed peep as Behemoth dropped a fist by him. Only a desperate tumble out of the way spared him a direct hit, the Jab reduced to a painful glancing blow. Desprate to recover the situation, he started to glow once more, a fresh Double Team springing forth from his body. They shuffled and darted between each other, doing everything they could to hide which was the real Echo.

Something approximating wistfulness crossed El's expression, as Blackjack regaled them with a story. There was something about his voice (not that they could put a finger on it,) that drew them in - that felt like home - and well... For a moment, they couldn't help but think of a certain someone else.

But with the story came another implication - namely, that this was something to learn from, a lesson as much as it was a test, and well... Maybe they should've realized it sooner - looking back at the prior nudges that Blackjack given them. But they couldn't help but feel somewhat mixed, over this realization - their expression shifting with the slightest furrow of their brows. They were a little tired of being taught to fight - even if this was different from learning to be a future gym leader. It was partly what drove them to leave, after all.

But, the test was still a test - and Ceres wasn't playing around at this point.

As the Torterra came flying, the still slightly-dazed Yggdrasil tensed up - as if bracing for impact. But El was quick to offer some advice. "Leaf Blade; get low to the ground!"

Following their direction, the turtwig's sprout was wreathed in energy, shaped into that of a horn, much like before. And dropping low, she'd dive down between Ceres' legs - both to try and avoid the worst of the Headlong Charge, and to try and strike at her underbelly! The ground shook wildly - vibrations reaching down to her very bones - at the heavy stamps of Ceres' stampede more or less passing just over her... But by Arceus, she'd persevere!

Behemoth, meanwhilst, snorted as he watched Echo burst into a flurry of ralts from the Double Team - though with the frenetic shuffling, it meant they were in a bit of a cluster. Shaking himself briefly, as if to loosen his muscles, he'd clench his fists - as if looking to bring out another Earth Power...

... But instead, without warning, he'd charge - dropping down to all fours, and wildly swinging his Megahorn in an attempt to strike as many of the ralts before him as he could, with each sweep!

[attr="class","skullbody"]The wistful expression on El's face was like a shot right to the heart. For El, they were brought back to a better time, a better place. For Isaac, it was a reminder of a life that he wished he could have enjoyed. Why did a domineering authority have to twist and ruin a life he'd built with people he genuinely enjoyed?[break][break]

Ruefully, Isaac realized he was unsure which life he meant.[break][break]

The furrow of El's brow snapped him out of his thoughts. Focus? No, no. It seemed more purposeful. Frustration? If it was, they were doing a remarkable job of not letting it get to them, delivering surprisingly pertinent advice in an even tone.[break][break]

That left annoyance, and judging by El's earlier statement Isaac had a feeling he knew the answer why.[break][break]

A telepathic question came to Isaac's mind. Without taking his focus away from El, Isaac nodded. The Mega Brace on his arm started to glow, Z-Power coursing through its metallic lattice framework. "Tell me," Isaac asked, holding his arm up high for the world to see. Despite the power coursing through him, he still managed to speak, calm and focused. Just how strong was the bond between him and his Pokemon?

"Do you think fighting and battle are one and the same?"[break][break]

Yggy had scored a direct hit, once more utilizing her size to her advantage. Ceres' bellow was equal parts pained and proud as the Leaf Blade swiped critically across her underbelly. However, before Yggy could capitalize on the momentum, the blade was snatched right off of her head. Only the original twig, bereft of all energy, remained.[break][break]

Behemoth would find his momentum arrested as well, the energy behind his Megahorn stripped away by a black hole that opened right n front of his face. The Echoes in front of him scrambled away, all gathering around the Black Hole as if they were collaborating on some sort of ritual.[break][break]

Seeing what was going on, Ceres thrust her hip outward. A concentrated coating of bark launched from her shell, even this Wood Hammer being sucked into the vortex.[break][break]

Once full, the black hole twisted away into nothingness.[break][break]

Then the Echoes pointed. Rift after rift opened in front of Behemoth, leaving the poor Nidoking surrounded by a sea of stars. Most of these were mere illusions, duplicates created by Echo's afterimages. However, one was the genuine article, pulsating from an overflow of stored up mass and energy.[break][break]

Behemoth had performed outstandingly. And that meant he got to enjoy a firsthand demonstration of the power of Z-Moves.[break][break]

BLACK HOLE BARRAGE - PSYCHIC-TYPE: incoming moves are nullified then countered toward a foe of ralts' choosing. the more moves nullified the stronger this attack is.

Was fighting and battle one and the same? El blinked at the question, their eyes drawn to the glow of the Mega Brace. The energy that flowed through it promised that something big was about to happen - and they couldn't quite bring themself to pull their eyes away from it, at least not yet. Still, the question that Blackjack posed lingered in their mind as they visibly considered it, and yet...

"... Is it a question of context?" They'd ask in turn - otherwise unsure of what the answer would be. Though, even with context in mind... They still didn't like this sort of thing. They would do what they had to, to keep helping people - but they still didn't like to see pokemon get hurt. The fact that things here were going to be serious, rather than just a casual battle between two trainers, didn't help.

Yet, from the looks of things, that was just about what was going to happen to Behemoth. Fueled by Z-Power, Echo formed a black hole that seemed to suck in every last bit of energy from the moves used in his vicinity - and then, a number of rifts opened around the Nidoking. Initially, he was bewildered - nostrils flaring and snorting - until his eyes settled upon but one rift, one that was pulsing ominously.

El, a sudden flash of anxiety rising up in their chest, called "Get back, Behemoth!" Z-moves were no joke, from what they understood of them - but maybe if he could avoid the worst of it--

Behemoth, however, knew a challenge when he saw one. And getting up onto his hind legs proper, he'd take in a deep breath to let loose a roar like none other - charging not away from the rift, but towards it! His arms begin to blaze with violet flames, flames that seemed to wreathe around him as he brought his claws together above his head. And without any hesitation or fear, he'd clash against the z-move with a Dragon Hammer - slamming his fists towards what was sure to come out from the rift...!

All the while, an awestruck Yggy watched - quiet, almost seeming contemplative.

[attr="class","skullbody"]"Not quite. It's more a question of . . . direction, if you will." Ugh. Why did Isaac keep ending up in roles like this? He was no teacher. He was no expert. He barely knew what he was doing! Yet the front of a cool, collected masked instructor held up even as internally he panicked.[break][break]

"A fight is against, just as the soldier was against the warrior. Sometimes it's for material. Sometimes it's for ideals. Sometimes it's just because one party wants to see another hurt. But it's always against." He looked out to the tunnel, the din of combat echoing down the cavern walls. "Past me, you'll find a lot of that."[break][break]

"Battles aren't against. Battles are together. You, your Pokemon, and your opponent, all working together to better yourselves and understand each other more deeply. When the warrior tried to face the soldier, fairly and openly, despite all the advantages at his back, he had hoped to battle."[break][break]

"A battle isn't just about who can throw the hardest punch. It's about an open mind and a sharp eye. It's about challenging yourself, and maybe even surprising yourself with what you discover."[break][break]

"A battle can get intense. From the outside, it might look like a fight." He could only imagine how Isaac felt as El, separated from the action, saw every blow and heard every sound.[break][break]

"But if that spirit is mutual-" He looked towards the battlefield, where Behemoth valiantly pushed against a surge of psychic energy with all of his might. "-and there are no hard feelings to be had-" He looked towards Yggy, Ceres trundling over to sit by her side. "-then it's worlds apart from your average brawl, don't you think?"[break][break]

Try as Behemoth might, no regular move could meet the might of a Z-Move. Each defiant smash would buy him last time than the last, and soon he would be overwhelmed by a blast full of shimmering stars. It was a powerful blow, debatably one capable of ending the entire match.[break][break]

And yet, was there not a strange beauty in seeing stardust drift along the battlefield?

The difference between a fight and a battle truly was vast, when you really got down to it. It was the difference of intentions and feelings, of sportsmanship. And there was more to a proper battle, than just beating the other person down.

Not that it was any less stressful for El, to watch as Behemoth clashed against the blast of energy that came forth from the rift. It was initially hard to say whether they even registered some of Isaac's words, with the way they were frozen up. Their eyes were locked on watching Behemoth - concern and worry plain to see in their expression. He surely couldn't stand up against the sheer power of a z-move, even with one of his stronger moves, could he?

Meanwhile, Yggdrasil nearly jumped out of her own shell, upon noticing Ceres' approach - and the little turtwig scrambled to face her with all the composure and presence of a spooked kitten. Which was to say, not a lot. She was initially prepared to return to throwing hands either way - noone had told her that the battle was over with yet, even if she had gotten distracted! Although, when she realized that Ceres wasn't actually attacking, well...

... Slowly, the turtwig began to settle back down - a glance cast back towards Behemoth and Echo. To be strong, like Ceres was - to be able to display power like Echo's... Yggy wanted something like that. Maybe if she proved to El that she was strong like that, then they wouldn't be as worried about her fighting..?

But well, the question for El was never about whether or not their pokemon were capable. Blackjack had said it himself, that a battle - from the outside - could look like a fight. Pokemon were strong. Stronger than any human - and they were sturdy creatures. Yggy was tenacious, Behemoth was courageous, Bibidi had sharp focus - all of El's pokemon were capable in some way or another, they recognized it - even if they didn't want to have to.

But by extension of pokemon being strong, battles were often a bit rougher and wilder than any spar between two humans could be. Even if a pokemon is often able to shake it off afterwards, how could someone see their beloved 'mon be engulfed in fire, or struck by lightning, and not worry for them? How could someone watch from the backlines, and not feel their heart twist with anxiety - with worries of what if something goes wrong, what if something goes awry?

And perhaps, this isn't exactly the best sort of feeling to mix with that of that ever-creeping sense of paranoia, that fills the air here.

Behemoth was losing ground in his clash against the Z-Move - and yet, he still stood as stalwart as he could be, each strike of his blazing fists punctuated by low snarls and defiant roars. Even as he had to take steps back, even as his limbs began to tire, he fought back as hard as he could - and when he could fight no more... He was swept away in a sea of stars.

El's gaze widened, as they saw Behemoth be thrown back by the blast of psychic energy - slamming into the wall behind him. Stardust was scattered about the cavern, in the wake of the clash and the aftermath alike. "B-Behemoth!" They called - and they weren't even really thinking, in that moment. They just ran forwards - even as their bad knee flared up in protest from the sudden movement - all to get to their dear friend's side. "Are you okay?!"

As El dropped down to get a closer look at Behemoth though, the nidoking in question - even if he appeared beat up - smiled. Was he hurting? Maybe a little, but well - that was what you got with the territory. And any sort of aches or pains felt like distant memories, in the wake of that simple feeling of satisfaction, that sunk into his bones.

The poison-type made a somewhat quizzical expression as he glanced towards El, though, and noted the worry in their eyes. What's the trouble? He was fine, wasn't he? As if to prove this, Behemoth made a sound like that of a chuckle - reaching up to pat his trainer on the head and ruffle their hair, even as his arm shook slightly with exertion.

And this response took El off guard, the young adult blinking owlishly, even if their eyes were wet with stress and worry. They couldn't help reaching up to try and straighten out their hair though, as they looked Behemoth up and down. No serious injuries - nothing that'd need anything besides a good night's rest... Confirming that Behemoth was ultimately okay would have El letting out a drawn-out sigh, shoulders deflating as some of the stress left with their breath. "... Y-you... You did good." They murmured - reaching over to pet Behemoth. He fought hard.

Bibidi, settling down at El's side, would give them a gentle pat on the shoulder - washing away any traces of lingering stress and tension with feelings of reassurance and calm. And when they decided to lean against her side, she'd wrap an arm around them without question - simply being there, as a comforting presence. Yggy, too, would join them - settling down against El's leg, on their opposite side.

"..." Though it took a good few moments of silence, El would find their voice - finally answering Blackjack. "I... I don't think I could match that spirit." They spoke softly, their gaze still settled upon Behemoth, their hand still petting him. "I... I can battle - it's not like I don't know how to, even if I don't have as much actual experience. But I don't want to. I've already been taught how to battle before, and... I hated it."

Feeling like they just had to nod and go along with what Dad wanted, to continue being the 'good kid' that they wanted to be... No matter how many times they were brought to watch their Dad fight someone though, they couldn't stop the way their heart twisted in some form of empathy whenever either pokemon got hit. Nor could they stop the worry of 'they'll be okay, right?' whenever another pokemon is brought down by a particularly nasty-looking attack, regardless of how much it actually hurt the other pokemon...

Taking in a deep breath to try and steady themself, and further pressing themself against Bibidi's side, they continued "I just... I just want to help people. Even if I can only help or save a few people, that's still more than if I just... Ran away. And I know it means that I might end up in some fights, even if I don't like it, even if I try to avoid it... But if I can prevent others from being hurt... I'll still try my best."

If them being here helped prevent someone from getting injured, or worse... Then maybe it'd be worth it, for as much as they didn't want to have to fight others.

[attr="class","skullbody"]Echo toddled over to his fallen rival, offering him a tiny, flipper-like hand. Despite the intensity with which they fought, or perhaps because of it, he was all smiles as he went to help him up. By now, the battle was clearly at its end, a craggy smile on Ceres' face as she watched the sportsmanship unfold.[break][break]

Yet El still seemed worried, running over to Behemoth and murmuring reassurances their way. "Ah, c'mon, Knux. Lets give 'em all something to smile about," he said, holding his brace towards the Lucario. The light of evolution spread across the Lucario's body, her limbs, dreadlocks, and spikes all lengthening. The stone around her collar wasn't just for show; the power of Mega Lucario was well within her grasp.[break][break]

Luckily, Isaac's offer was genuine. With a flex of her paw, the Lucario sent a quartet of Heal Pulses spinning around her paw. The cave was bathed in a pink light as she held her paw up high, sending the pulses spiraling towards each of the combatants. With the energy of a Mega Lucario backing each pulse up, all four of the Pokemon would be back in near-perfect shape.[break][break]

El's Pokemon came out to comfort them as they pondered Isaac's words. Despite their Pokemon's clear excitement, despite Isaac extolling the virtues of battle, despite the line of separation drawn between it and brutal combat . . .[break][break]

El still hated the idea of battle. And that was okay.[break][break]

"I get it," Isaac said, voice gentle. "There's a lot of ways of connecting with people. There's a lot of ways of bettering yourself. There's a lot of ways of preparing for the worst. Battling's a great way of taking on all three of those at once. But nothing in this world's the end-all, be-all."[break][break]

"Still, while it doesn't have to be your passion . . ." He turned an eye towards Yggy, who Ceres was currently helping train in jaw strength by using her own Crunch to heft boulders in the air. He turned towards Echo, who was cheerfully teleporting around Behemoth and sprinkling him in Life Dew as if it was victory confetti.[break][break]

"Sometimes, we have to let those we love do what makes them happy. Even when we don't agree."[break][break]

Isaac's voice was distant and wistful. Even as he focused on his little sibling's team, he knew who those words were truly meant for.[break][break]

With that, he turned on his heel to start walking away. "You've got good goals. Keep your head about you, and maybe you'll get far with 'em," he said. "Just be careful out there, alright? This place doesn't care how good your intentions are. So if you really want this . . ."[break][break]

"You're just gonna have to look it dead in the eye and make it care."

A soothing pink light fell over the cavern - one that soothed the aches in one's muscles, eased bruises, mended scrapes... For a moment, El could even forget the pain flaring up in their knee - they really shouldn't have ran like that - in the wake of the gentle warmth that enveloped the group thanks to Knux.

As Echo approached to offer what might be a little handshake, Behemoth would sit up to glance at the smaller ralts - a hue of gentle amusement and friendliness in his smile. He'd reach out to take Echo's hand, gently shaking it as he made a content little chuff. The ralts truly was a worthy opponent - and Behemoth was looking forward to the potential of another fight in the future.

When Yggy saw Ceres begin lifting up boulders with Crunch, meanwhile, the little turtwig perked up - quickly catching on to the torterra's intentions. Wasting no time, she'd run off to look for a suitably sized rock that she could lift up too - she'd find an extra big one, to impress Ceres all the more!

And all the while, Blackjack spoke - and El listened closely, their expression thoughtful. Perhaps hate was a strong word - cause it almost implied that they wanted pokemon battles to be gone completely - but indeed, they weren't sure if battles like these were things that they'd ever get used to. And yet, that being said... Yggy and Behemoth, the two of them still actively enjoyed getting into battles. The duo wanted to test themselves against others - to get big and strong and prove themselves against the world...

... And really, Blackjack had a point. Even if El doesn't like battles, they did like seeing their pokemon happy, and well... They weren't sure of the last time they saw Behemoth and Yggy so satisfied and content. Perhaps it'd be worth it to try and push aside those feelings, to let the two have their fun every once in awhile, just to be able to see this sort of happiness afterwards?

But as Blackjack began to turn away, El would get up - moving and reaching out to gently grab his wrist. "Wait-" They spoke, though for a moment they couldn't help but pause as their actions had outpaced their own brain. For a moment, they stood their - mouth open - as they needed a minute to let their brain finally catch up to find some proper words.

And once they found those words, taking in a deep breath... "I-... Thank you, for... For looking out for us." They'd finally speak - their voice a gentle sigh. "... I wasn't, uhm... Sure what to expect, from running into a Rocket member, but... You're really kind. A good person. Thank you for helping us."

[attr="class","skullbody"]Isaac stopped as El's fingers gently wrapped around his wrist. Then, as El found their words, his stop went to an outright freeze. His breath stopped. His eyes widened. His chest tightened. Echo tilted his head, the feelings Pokemon picking up on the distress he had but wondering why he harbored it. Knuckles, overwhelmed by the sudden shift in Isaac's aura, found the wind and the Infinity Energy knocked out of her. Now a regular Lucario, she cautiously approached.[break][break]

Standing there in that cold, clammy cave, Isaac's life flashed before his eyes.[break][break]

The resentment over how his father treated him, the yin to the yang of having an innocent sibling who he cared for despite everything. Try as he might to keep them separate, they always blended together more than he'd hoped.[break][break]

The pain he'd caused when his big ideas exploded in his face. El wasn't always just smarter, kinder, and more talented. They were also more athletic, too, until Isaac ruined that by wounding them for life. He saw the scars of that injury's supposed fragility today, mental and physical alike. Would he ever balance out what he'd done?[break][break]

The way he just ran away when the going got tough. The weight of expectation rocked back further onto El's shoulders when he was gone, the scapegoat no longer there to be a good little sacrifice. Not only did it hurt El, but it hurt himself. How much had running away come to define his life?[break][break]

The crimes he'd committed with Rocket. The tragedies he was too weak to prevent. The atrocities that even his small, mostly harmless actions facilitated. And he had the gall to delude El into thinking he was a good person, after everything he'd done.[break][break]

"If you're looking for a good person, look for ." His words were hard and guarded, like a Torterra pulling into his shell. Was it that he didn't want to accept what El was telling him? "I was just passing through."[break][break]

Or was it that he couldn't?

El blinked at first, at the mention of - recognition flashing across their expression. The woman with a prosthetic leg - the ranger who had inspired them to try and sign up to become a ranger proper. She was undeniably a good person, they'd agree, and yet... "... You're good, too." They insisted. Emphasized, even. That characteristic Sunderland stubbornness was rearing its head, as usual.

"You... didn't need to step in, when you saw us. But you did. I'm not wholly sure what you'd been looking for, out here - but it probably wasn't us..." And yet rather than just ignore them - or even worse, prey on them while they were distracted - he stepped in to help. Things could've gone so much worse, without his help - or even if he had arrived just a little bit later.

But that wasn't all, was it? "But it's... Kinda hard for me to believe you're not good, when these two are here, y'know." El glanced to Knux and Echo meaningfully. "Lucario and ralts are both pretty sensitive to emotions and intent. It's pretty hard to lie to a pokemon who can sense your aura, from what I understand - and I have heard lucario can get stressed out if they don't like what they sense."

"But especially for a ralts, well... Wild ralts usually only show up around good-natured people - the slightest bit of ill will or negative emotion will scare one off."

Smiling gently to Echo, they'd gesture him over and - if he approached - would lean down to pat him on the head. "Even a ralts with a trainer will pick up on their trainer's feelings pretty easily, right? To the point that it, uhm, can affect them physically." Namely, in regards to observations like how a ralts sensing warm feelings will warm up in turn. "Echo and - Knux, right? - they both seem happy and healthy... All of your pokemon do, really. But those two being in such good shapes is an especially good sign."

Glancing back to Isaac, El smiled gently, concluding "If you weren't a good person... I don't think they would've stuck with you like this." At least, not without something else to keep them here - but El felt like they wouldn't have been so happy in such a case. "But here they are."

And as if to emphasize this, Bibidi reached out to Isaac's mind - impressing her memories of him teaching her about El, their needs, and the different moves to help them... It really was that extra bit of proof that Isaac was better than he gave himself credit for, wasn't it?
