Things were getting hectic. A bit more hectic than one might expect.

League and Rocket both showing up at once was bad enough - but there was also talks of a rift in Granite Cave, one that was expanding- which was pretty damn concerning all things considered..! Dewford was wrapped up in chaos, and civillians were evacuating to safety, to avoid being drawn into the crossfire... At least, aside from those who were sticking around to try and help.

El was one of those civillians, much to Bibidi's chagrin. The alakazam wasn't happy that they were sticking around in what was quickly becoming a warzone - but there were those who needed help. People who had gotten separated from their loved ones, be they human or pokemon, amidst everything going on. And El, being the kind heart that they are, was incapable of turning their back on those who needed help.

However, what had started as a search for someone's pet zigzagoon had quickly turned into something else, when they had begun searching the outskirts of Dewford - perhaps a little closer to Granite than they should've. One moment, they were calling for Ziggy to come out... And the next, the space around them seemed to warp - twist - before they found themselves falling... And then nothing.

When El had come to, it was to a worried Bibidi watching over them, in some sort of strange tunnel. Scattered through this dimly lit cave system - wherever they were - were pools of dark water that appeared more than just a little foreboding. And it was as if gravity itself behaved strangely, for the sheer fact that they were able to float through the air as if it were water. Was this the result of the rift? It must've been - else there weren't any other explanations that they could find for this.

Teleporting didn't appear possible, however - at least, not back to Dewford. Though Bibidi attempted, it was as if some boundary was blocking the way - not that she could exactly explain what the block was. But that left only one option - and that was to start moving, in the hopes that the two of them could find a way out on their own... Which was easier said than done, given that this was completely unfamiliar territory. For now, El decided to go for an old tried and true - which was to follow the wall on their right, and stick with it until they hopefully found some way out.

At the very least, it was quiet here. Or at least, it started as being pretty quiet. Though there was nothing to be seen here, after awhile of walking around, El couldn't help but feel... Unsettled. As if they were being watched by something, not that they knew what. It had started as a tingling feeling, but bit by bit was growing stronger. No matter how often El looked though, they didn't find anything - nor could Bibidi sense any other minds in the vicinity. They couldn't figure out if that fact made things easier, or harder, to cope with.

But then, as El rounded a corner, they spotted something - just for the briefest of seconds. The tunnel ahead branched into two paths, and as they noticed it, they had caught a glimpse of something heading down one of the tunnels. Was that another person? A pokemon? "Hello?" El called, as they picked up the pace to try and catch up with whoever they saw. "Is someone out there?" There was no response, though. And as El rounded the next corner, they'd soon become aware of why.

Because they'd find themself face to face, with a pair of nihilego. The jellyfish-like ultra beasts would turn to face El - and near-immediately began advancing, letting out otherworldly whispers, tentacles outstretched--

-- before Bibidi interfered, using Psychic to hold the two beasts at bay. The Alakazam could immediately tell that these were not normal pokemon, however - even the surface layers of these two nihilegos' minds being completely alien to her. It was difficult enough to hold them back even, having to invest every bit of her focus to prevent them from pushing through by brute force alone.

El, alarmed, was immediately checking their belt, wondering who to bring up against the two nihilego. These were something that El didn't recognize at all - not their typings, nor what sort of attacks they'd use, or even their natural behavior. No books that they'd read had ever spoken of anything like this - and safe to say, they were more than a bit frazzled in who else to bring out to back Bibidi up. Do they bring out Behemoth, for the muscle? Akero, for support?

Unbeknownst to El though, there was one more nihilego in the area. One that was creeping up behind them, drifting ever-so-silently... But that wasn't all, was it?

[attr="class","skullbody"]Friend like , foe like , nobody deserved the Nihilego's embrace.[break][break]

Isaac wasn't directly familiar with the effects of the Ultra Beast's toxin, but he knew people who were more familiar than anyone should have been. The effects it had on the mind, the pain both physical and psychological, the sheer cruelties that could be enacted with just a dose of its toxins . . .[break][break]

Was the Ultra Beast itself evil? Or was it simply a Pokemon uniquely suited to being used for such purpose?[break][break]

Isaac couldn't care less about philosophy. Not when three of them were surrounding someone like a pack of coyotes around a henhouse, ready to make them suffer for daring to stray too far into their realm. There was fear in their green eyes as they braced themselves behind their Alakazam. The psychic power rippling from their Pokemon cast a faint glow on their pale features, as if emphasizing the tension and alarm on their face. They stood back as they searched their belt for a Pokeball, almost as if they were keeping their weight off of . . .[break][break]

A . . .[break][break]

Bad . . .[break][break]

Leg . . .[break][break]

No.[break][break]

No no no no no no no no no no.[break][break]

It couldn't be. It shouldn't be. It wasn't possible. But even after six years of separation, a hell of a growth spurt on their part, and the biggest year of Isaac's life, their presence was unmistakable.[break][break]

Elliot was here. And he was being menaced by some of the worst nightmares to ever surface in Hoenn.[break][break]

Not today. Not on Isaac's watch.[break][break]

Two Pokeballs slammed down onto the ground, an Alolan Marowak and a Torterra emerging from them. "Duster, with me," Isaac said, the desperation in his voice such that the Marowak followed without question. The two of them scrambled onto Ceres' back, clinging to her tree for dear life. "Ceres, see that Nihilego sneaking up on someone?"[break][break]

"Show it no mercy."[break][break]

Protective instincts flooded Ceres' mind, the Torterra letting out an enraged snort. Her normal gentleness became tempered by steel as she charged forward, momentum carrying her in a way Isaac had never seen before. Her heavy footfalls practically shook the earth, the only warning of her approach as within seconds she had sped behind Elliot. Perhaps he would feel the turbulence from her approach as the Torterra slammed into the Nihilego, not stopping until the two collided with a cavernous wall.[break][break]

She ground the spiked half of her shell into the Nihilego, her Headlong Rush causing immense pain as she left it between a rock and a hard place. That was just one Nihilego, though. There were two more being held back by a familiar Alakazam. "Duck!" Isaac called.[break][break]

Even as he said his first words to Elliot in half a decade, he doubled down on the gravel in his voice to hide his identity. He couldn't have Elliot recognize him. Not like this.[break][break]

His command was Duster's cue. The Alolan Marowak gave its bone a twirl, then tossed it towards the Nihilego duo. Its Bonemerang would be able to arc through both of the damned jellyfish in a single toss. With any luck, it would also spur them both into a retreat.[break][break]

If he wasn't so fortunate, then Isaac himself would intervene. He launched himself off of Ceres' back, ready to punch any surviving Nihilego right in the cap.

El felt it as much as they heard it - the ground thudding as something large was charging in what they thought to be in their direction. Their gaze snapped up from their belt to try and identify what they were hearing -- just in time to see the third nihilego creeping up on them..! Before El could so much as jolt away or the nihilego could reach them though, a large torterra slammed into the ultra beast - the characteristic spikes of the ground-type stabbing into its soft body.

The nihilego let out a bloodchilling shriek as it was impaled against the wall, tentacles writhing wildly. Luminescent blood(?) flowed from the wounds inflicted - and it would attempt to strike its tentacles against Ceres' shell, as if searching for any soft bits that it could try and inject its toxin into. This search would prove to be in vain though, with the awkward placement putting it well out of reach of the unprotected parts of Ceres' body.

El, meanwhile, stumbled back and away from the torterra - their back pressing against Bibidi's own, alarm clear in their expression. "A-Augustus..?!" The name escaped their lips unbidden, as they initially mistook Ceres for their father's torterra. But it took but a blink for them to realize that this torterra was different - younger, less battleworn, with fewer sharp angles to her shape. This was not a brutish juggernaut of a beast, but a steady and stalwart defender.

A warning voice would ring out, though - snapping El from their thoughts. Not wanting to wait to ask any why's, what's, or how's, they'd immediately duck downwards - dropping to their good knee. Bibidi, too, would react quick - ducking downwards, but also pushing the two nihilego upwards with Telekinesis to give Duster a clearer shot.

And overheads, the two could hear the whistle of a Bonemerang flying through the air. It slammed into one Nihilego, before ricocheting into the other - sending both ultra beasts reeling back. One of the beasts seemed to decide it had enough - backing away from the group, though it didn't dare turn its back on them. The other, however, stood its ground - glimmering lights forming as it prepared a Power Gem--

-- Only to earn a strike to its cap for its efforts, from a leaping Isaac. Stunned and perhaps bewildered, it would reel back - the Power Gem fading - before the two decided to cut their losses and leave. The third nihilego, meanwhile, would decide to fire off an Acid Spray at Ceres in an attempt to force her back, so that it could pull itself off of her spikes - making its retreat...

Only when the three ultra beasts had disappeared into the dark of the Ultra Deep Sea, did El and Bibidi finally relax - the trainer slumping back against their Alakazam with a heavy sigh of relief. "Th-thanks, that... That was something..." They murmured - glancing to their savior, before carefully pushing themself back up to their feet. A young man with a black skull mask covering their face - though it was a bit tricky to make out the exact details, given the low light conditions of the tunnels. They initially weren't sure what to make of him - initially wondering if the mask was some sort of cosplay or vigilante thing...

... But then their thoughts drifted to that of Rocket - a group of people who were no strangers to hiding their own identities. This thought prompted a sense of alarm and unease, which made their heart skip a beat (though, it was hard to say how much of it could be blamed on Rocket, and not on the Deep Sea itself.) Unsure of what to make of this other person, El's grip on their cane tensed slightly, as they asked "Who... Are you?"

Bibidi, however, had a better idea of things. The other person's mind - the feel of it was unmistakably familiar, especially as she reached out her mental presence to brush up against Isaac's own mind. She wouldn't - couldn't - ever forget her former trainer, and would express as much in the form of a sense of recognition, greeting, and thanks all conveyed upon his mind.

The worry flooding through Isaac's mind gave way to frustration. Even now, even after everything, Elliot's instincts snapped right to their father. Even after the way he had been treated, for years on end, the truth was as plain as day. Elliot was his father's son, and he was just the loose end hanging off of their bond.[break][break]

Perhaps, as the Alakazam pressed against his mind, she would feel some of that bitterness simmering to the surface. It quickly gave way to panic as he realized he was no longer alone inside his thoughts. That was right. He'd caught this Alakazam. He'd trained it just so that they could help Elliot as much as possible. Even without psychic powers, it was intelligent enough to put 2 and 2 together and realize who he was.[break][break]

His thoughts swirled together into a single plea; Don't say anything. Please. He wasn't ready to face Elliot again. Not like this. Not while he still carried this sin.[break][break]

"You okay?" Isaac asked, brushing off the gratitude he knew he didn't deserve and focusing on what was important. He didn't look at El as he spoke, instead gently patting the acid off of Ceres' face with a simple washcloth. However, judging by the occasional peek over his shoulder, it was clear who he was focused on.[break][break]

Elliot asked who he was. Good. He didn't recognize him. Had he, he might've just run screaming through the nearest Ultra Rift before the war even kicked off. At least now, he could focus. At least now, he could pretend. At least now, he could hide the thoughts that screamed their way through his head.[break][break]

"The name's Blackjack," he said, staring out towards the labyrinthine maze of the Ultra Deep Sea. "And I'm the one getting you out of here."

Bibidi took the emotions that welled up from Isaac in stride - the bitterness, the panic... She did not intrude upon his mind any further than necessary, however. She did not have to delve deep simply to greet and give thanks... Yet, he had something to ask of her. A request - though more a plea - to not say anything, presumably to El. The Alakazam studied Isaac for a few moments - both visually and mentally - as if considering...

... Before she quietly nodded to him, agreeing.

Though, she would impress a sense of caution upon him - expressing her protective desire - before she backed away from his mind. She embraced the role that Isaac had given her wholly - and that meant that if he went too far in whatever he may be planning, she'd protect them from him, too. But for the meantime, she was simply content to watch over the two siblings.

El, meanwhile, perked up at the question offered to them, before nodding. "Y-yeah, I'm unhurt," They responded quickly, putting on a smile as they took a second to brush themself off. To say they were unhurt was the truth, of course - besides maybe a minor bruise/scrape or two from the 'fall' through the rift that brought them here. But 'okay' was hard to quantify when... Well... This place was pretty spooky. Something about it was weighing on their mind like an ever-present pressure - and they kept feeling as though they were seeing things out of the corner of their eyes.

But, they didn't want to dwell on that. Instead, as Blackjack introduced himself and declared his intentions to get El out of here, the young adult blinked, before nodding. Between the stated intentions - and a soothing brush against their mind from Bibidi, who seemed willing to trust him - some of the prior tension leaked out of them as they offered him a smile. "It's - uhm - nice to meet you, Blackjack." They responded. "My name's El, I'll follow your lead."

Though, they'd cast a glance to Ceres and Duster both - El's curiosity clearly piqued by the presence of other pokemon. "You've got some cool pokemon - what're their names?" They'd ask - approaching Ceres, and extending a hand in a quiet offer to pet her. Such a big torterra - what Yggy would think of her?

Arceus, why did Elliot have to be so hard to stay mad at? It would've been so easy to just lift him up by the scruff, drag him to the nearest Ultra Rift, and call it a day. But giving in to any lingering resentment made him feel like the scum of the Earth, and outside of a reminder about a man he loathed, Elliot had done nothing to earn his ire.[break][break]

Instead, brotherly concern broke through his skull-faced facade. He always knew when Elliot was holding back the truth. Even after all these years, he had an immaculate ear for it.[break][break]

Elliot - or El, now? Was this a nickname? Isaac faintly recalled Elliot mentioning preferring it every now and then, but he figured it was in the same way a Robert could prefer Bob. Or Bobby. Or Rob. Or Robbie. Robert truly was the Eevee of names. Regardless, he kept a mental note of his brother's new preference.[break][break]

Where was he? Right. El said it was nice to meet him. "Don't get used to it," he warned. The idea of his poor, unsuspecting brother strutting up to a Rocket Grunt and ending up target practice made him sick. "You're not in nice to meet you territory, El." It was all the more reason to be content that El had fallen in step with him.[break][break]

Despite having just established this was no place for pleasantries, Isaac couldn't resist El's curiosity. He never could. "Ceres," he said, giving a curt nod the Torterra's way. A far cry from her trainer's attempt at establishing distance, she softly nuzzled El's hand. "Duster," he continued, indicating his Marowak in much the same way. He returned Isaac's curt nod, then gave one to El in turn.[break][break]

Silence gave way to burning curiosity. Isaac knew he'd hate whatever answer he heard, and yet he had to know. Was he looking for fault? Was he looking for answers? Or did he just want to interrogate the universe? Whatever the case, Isaac found a question flowing forth to fill the void.[break][break]

"Why are you here?"

At Blackjack's retort in seeing past their half-truth, El blinked a second, before scratching the back of their head. "I-It's nothing, really." They'd speak - though it was somehow even more obvious than before, that it wasn't really nothing.

When Bibidi impressed a sense of urging upon them though - encouraging them to tell the truth - El would make a face and try to push back against the Alakazam's mental presence (even if that was essentially like trying to push back a brick wall.) They didn't want to trouble him!

Though Blackjack would hear nothing of the two's interactions - given it was all mental - he'd likely spot the way the two kept glancing and making faces at one another. Mostly El, really - even now, they wore their heart on their sleeve, even when having a conversation with their psychic-type. It didn't take long for El to relent under Bibidi's stare, though - murmuring to her "Ok, ok..." with a sigh, as they glanced back to Blackjack.

Briefly, they fidgeted - as if still reluctant to speak up... But they'd soon confess. "There's, uhm... S-something about this place that, well, really creeps me out... I keep feeling like something's watching me. But every time I mentioned it to Bibidi - my Alakazam - she hadn't sensed anything else out here... I just can't shake the feeling, though." Maybe the nerves of being in such an unfamiliar place was getting to them, that was probably it.

Introductions were met with a firm warning and distant reception from Blackjack, though - and El blinked, before nodding. "R-right..." They murmured in response, fidgeting.

Ceres' warmer approach helped to put a smile back on El's face though - and after giving a wave to Duster in response to the nod, they'd begin petting Ceres. "You both have nice names, Ceres, Duster." They spoke - adding "Thank you two, too, for helping us."

Though, with that, things would fall quiet - El content to mingle with the pokemon as the group walked. They weren't sure what to make of Blackjack, but he at least seemed kind enough, to be helping them out of here. They were willing to try and push aside that ever-present unease to trust him, if Bibidi trusted him too. Still - sometimes, they couldn't help but glance over their shoulder, as if expecting to see something...

... Blackjack's voice suddenly breaking the silence would make them jump a little. They blinked owlishly, glancing to the young man, before realizing that he had asked them something - namely, why they were here. "W-well..." They initially began - wondering where to start. "I didn't mean to come here - really. I had been visiting Dewford, before things started going crazy... But when Rocket showed up, and everyone started evacuating, I stuck around to help people get out."

El paused - both to gather their thoughts, and to scratch their cheek a little. "A little kid - her Zigzagoon had gotten spooked and ran off, but she couldn't stay to look for him. So I offered to try and find him." They offered a somewhat sheepish smile to Blackjack and Bibidi both with this. They knew it wasn't exactly the safest thing to do, but well... They couldn't say no to requests for help. Besides, it was a preferable compromise to, say, trying to help on the frontlines or something.

"When I couldn't find him in town though, I thought the lil guy might've hidden in some bushes, or some nook or cranny - somewhere quiet. So I started searching along the outskirts of Dewford - but..." El paused, brows furrowing in thought as they tried to think back to when they had fallen into the rift. "It had happened so suddenly - it felt like everything around me had just. Twisted. And then I was falling, things went dark..."

"... And when I opened my eyes, I was here. I couldn't see any clear way back, so I just... Started walking, with Bibidi."
They had figured if they just kept following a wall, it'd eventually lead them somewhere - and in a way, it did. But which way the exit was was still a mystery to them.

[attr="class","skullbody"]"It should." Isaac's priority was to warn, not to comfort. He didn't want El to be comfortable here. The last thing he wanted was for being in an active warzone in another dimension, surrounded by parasites from another reality while two factions worth of idiots tried to unseal God itself, to become comfortable for him.[break][break]

It was already his reality. It was the reality of too many people in Hoenn. It couldn't be El's reality, too.[break][break]

Still, the tough love approach was hard. It was even harder when El revealed why they were here. He wasn't trying to get stuck in the middle of a war. He was just trying to keep the door open for others to escape before making his own way out. Then, when he encountered someone who needed extra help, he threw caution to the wind and did something reckless. Something brave. Something heroic.[break][break]

Something, Isaac ruefully realized, he would have done.[break][break]

Isaac averted his gaze, unable to meet El's eyes. "You're a good kid," he acknowledged. "But this is serious. This isn't the time or place for playing hero. There are lives at risk here." Unspoken, yet all too clear in Isaac's mind, was the fact that he didn't want El's to be among them.[break][break]

"Do you know where you are?"

A good kid. Being told that would make El's expression twist a little - the barest flicker of frustration, hidden behind general discomfort. "I'm an adult..." They couldn't help but murmur, their voice barely above a whisper. But beyond that, they felt somewhat talked down to. As if they hadn't been taking care of themself just fine, before the expanding rift's influence came along and threw them for a loop. Really, it was something that no average person should have to expect needing to deal with. How were they supposed to know that this was going to happen, when they weren't even in Granite when it did?

Taking in a deep breath though, they'd speak a bit more openly, stating "I'm not trying to play hero - I'm just trying to be a Ranger. I know I'm still in training, but..." ... But they weren't some fragile doll, either. They'd been just fine, up to now. They didn't need to feel like there was a child leash being put on them by a stranger.

But then came the question of where they were - and El blinked, before beginning to think. The top of their head answer would be 'no' - and yet... At the same time, it seemed pretty obvious, even if they didn't have a name to put to this place. "... This is beyond the rift, right?" They questioned, glancing to Blackjack. Beyond the rift that both League and Rocket seemed so interested in.

But then that raised the question - why hadn't they run into other people yet? Why were there no signs of fighting here? Did they somehow end up going to some whole other part of this weird place? Or had the people here already moved on?

[attr="class","skullbody"]Isaac sighed a little at El's quiet response. Right. El was no longer the literal child he had paid a digital visit. He had to have been 18 by this point; a level of adulthood that, frankly, bordered on technicality. Isaac was days away from 23 and even he felt more like a stupid kid in over his head than anything else.[break][break]

"My bad," he conceded, ceding this battlefield in favor of more important targets. "It can be hard to tell sometimes. My vision ain't what it used to be."[break][break]

Perhaps El would notice the stitched-together gash trailing from cheek to crown along Isaac's mask. Perhaps he'd notice that, despite the mask having two eyeholes, only one had anything poking through it.[break][break]

Wait. Did El just say he was training to be a Ranger?[break][break]

For a second, Isaac's breath hitched. His skin, barely visible beneath the mask, paled. Ceres' tree shook a little, as if to try and draw his attention elsewhere, and even Duster looked up from polishing his bone.[break][break]

Visions of the worst danced through his head. An increasingly desperate Dahlia Goode throwing him, a mere conscript, into the frontlines. A mind too innocent and a heart too kind being jaded and broken by the atrocities that he forced himself through. The brother who he couldn't stop himself from loving being under the knife of a murderer; , , even . . .[break][break]

"This isn't a place for those, either." Isaac's voice rang distant, hollow, as if he had been carved out from the inside. "This is war. I don't care what Dahlia Goode says. Only soldiers should have to brave this hell."[break][break]

He wanted to grab El, run to the airport, and buy two tickets to Alola so they could get away from all of this. He wanted to tear off his mask, get on his knees, and beg El to never make the mistakes he had. He wanted to describe, in agonizing detail, every lsos he felt and atrocity he had undergone just to make them understand.[break][break]

But deep down, he knew. They were cut from the same cloth. He knew resistance would only make him more desperate to prove himself. But what the fuck was he supposed to do? Just let him get swept into this hurricane of death? Assist him behind enemy lines? Crush him, as Rocket demanded they do to any Ranger, and any Leaguer, and anyone who dared stand against them?[break][break]

Isaac forced himself to tether. Right. El had a question. Time to answer that question. "That's right. You're in a world between worlds," he said, his voice still hushed and discomforted. The more he spoke, the more it re-inflated, but any prior control he had exerted was long gone. "The Ultra Deep Sea. One of the homes to the same Ultra Beasts that threw this region into chaos. You just survived an encounter with three of the worst."[break][break]

"The League and Rocket alike have been running themselves ragged scouting these places out for months. And now they're trying to use 'em to blaze a trail to Arceus itself."[break][break]

"Right now, we're some of the lucky ones." Even saying that word felt disgusting right now. "You landed on the fringes, and everyone's pushing inward. That means we only need to deal with the hostile wildlife, flood risks, and chance of getting lost in this maze of a cave."

His vision..? El blinked, glancing back over to Blackjack to try and figure out what he meant - having to study the grunt for a few moments, with the dim light making picking out the details tricky. And yet, it wasn't hard to notice the stitches that overlaid Blackjack's mask - a line that crossed over one of the eyeholes of the mask. And it didn't take long to notice the absence of an eye, in that gap, either...

... El's expression soon became one of clear sympathy, in noticing these little details. The both of them had been injured in different ways - although El felt like losing one's eye had to be worse than just having a bad leg... "... I'm sorry," They murmured - though they weren't wholly sure whether they were apologizing for staring, for having him bring up his vision, or what.

Though, Blackjack had something to say to them being a ranger-in-training, and well... El frowned - both at the tone in the grunt's voice, and at what he said. Briefly, they opened their mouth to respond - but then they closed it, mulling over what to say. Their expression furrowed with thought, glancing at the path ahead of them, before they'd finally respond "It's not like I wanted to come here, or wanted to charge to fight the first Rocket I see. I just wanted to help someone find their best buddy - help a pokemon that's probably lost, confused, and scared find their family." It wasn't their fault that things had gone awry faster than they could blink.

But, soon came the answer to their question - as to where the group was now. Ultra Deep Sea, a world between worlds, and one of the territories that the Ultra Beasts called home. El sucked in a breath and nodded as they took in the information provided - finding themself more aware than ever just how much trouble being here, even at the fringes, was. They really were some of the lucky ones, weren't they...

... Just standing here made El feel like they were getting into something so much bigger than themself. Briefly squeezing the grip of their cane, they'd pick up the pace a hair - eager to get back to more familiar pastures.

[attr="class","skullbody"]"It was my fault," Isaac said, doing little more than shrugging his shoulders. It was better than El's injury, at least, which had also been all his fault. At least in this case, the only person he'd hurt was himself. "Reap what you sew, y'know?"[break][break]

El chafed at the first half of Isaac's warnings, protesting that it wasn't his fault that he ended up here. It was an act of kindness that had gone horribly awry, and now he was sucked into another dimension. "And yet, here you are," Isaac mused. See? That big heart of El's caused nothing but trouble. The Zigzagoon was probably dead, and now he was at risk of the same.[break][break]

Before he could point that out, Isaac pondered what he would've done in that situation. Ruefully, he came to the realization that he would've done the same. Hell, Isaac would've dove right into that portal. If anything, El was the more sensible of the two. But that would've been against his point, so he choked the thought down with a weary chuckle.[break][break]

The rest of his warnings resonated, but almost better than Isaac had hoped. Instead of fostering understanding, they were just dragging the mood down. As his weary chuckle ebbed away, Isaac turned to El with a sad smile on his face.[break][break]

"Look. I'm not telling you this to try and make you stop being good," Isaac said, because he wasn't. El was a better person than he ever could have been, and he wanted to protect that fact with his life. "I'm telling you because . . . frick, this is bigger than you, y'know? It's bigger than me. Bigger than anyone. Bigger than the sun."[break][break]

"Helping out's different. What it means to be a ranger's different. This whole region's different. And not for the better." Unconsciously, he found his finger tracing the scar that the knife carved down his face, the tip of his gloved finger passing through the sewn gap and faintly brushing his face. "It's too late for me. But you don't have to get caught up in all of it. Not even when it seems like life grabs you by the throat and doesn't give you a choice."

And yet, here they are. Even if El never meant to end up here, they still had to figure out getting out of this mess. This mess that - much like Blackjack stated - was much bigger than one could fathom, especially when other dimensions were getting involved, especially if Arceus truly was a part it (or at least, going to be a part of it.) It was a little mindboggling to think about for too long - and paired with the ever-present paranoia of the Deep Sea...--

But, Bibidi's mental presence would wash over El - cradling, gentle, reassuring... And as she did - she would impress knowledge upon them. She couldn't teleport directly out of Ultra Deep Sea - but within it, well... That seemed a little more doable.

And as El wrapped themself in the warmth that was Bibidi's mind and thought it over, they realized she was right. Maybe once they found a proper exit, then they'd be okay. Bibidi's teleportation didn't work between worlds - but within the same world would work. So as long as she knew where an exit was, they could ideally be able to Teleport to it if this all happened again, right? And beyond that...

Taking in a deep breath then, El would glance to Blackjack once more - a little steadier than before. "... Even if... Even if things are as big as you say, I can't just sit by and do nothing. People already try to take my choice away because they're worried about me." They spoke, briefly gesturing with their cane to convey their point. "But... I'm not fragile. And I want to help. Even if it's a drop in the bucket to everything else going on, I still want to help others where I can."

That was their choice, they decided, meeting Blackjack's gaze where they could.

Isaac glowered. It wasn't because he was angry at El. Rather, like the devil on the crossroads, El had found the one string of words needed to banish Isaac from his sight.[break][break]

He knew all too well how El resented the yoke of fragility. He could feel how the mood in their home changed when the accident happened, and the ways the two of them could hang out were drastically changed. He hated knowing that both the initial injury and the coddling that resulted were all his fault. He hated seeing that the scars of such treatment still followed El to this day, just as his own still haunted him.[break][break]

"You're an even bigger fool than I thought."[break][break]

There was no if. There was no and. There was no but. Plain and simple, Isaac said his piece, and then turned to walk away from El.[break][break]

Or so it would seem. After a few paces, Isaac stopped. He moved his hand away from his belt, revealing a well-worn Pokeball in the palm of his hand. "Now prove to me that you're a fool that can back up what you're saying. Two of your best."[break][break]

If El wanted to risk his life like this, then he was gonna have to rise to Isaac's challenge first.

El winced slightly at being called a fool - maybe they were, to want to remain around Dewford despite everything going on, but... That was their choice to make!

Blackjack, however, did not seem to think the same. He would take a few steps away, before drawing out a pokeball - challenging them to prove themself to him. Initially, El was bewildered - wondering what Blackjack had meant, but-... It didn't take long, for it to click.

That he wanted a pokemon battle.

And El couldn't help but balk at this. After all, they had a strong dislike for pokemon battles - they didn't like seeing their pokemon be needlessly hurt, nor did they like seeing other peoples' pokemon get hurt. Was this really necessary? "Do I really have to fight you?" El questioned, their voice soft, uncertainty plain in their expression as they took a step back.
