Barely been a day, and Ash is here in the cave. He didn't sleep last night. Yet here he was, assigned to a mission he shouldn't have been assigned to the day after. If anything, it was the cleanest way to keep it all off the books as much as it could be. Ashley, however, found little comfort. Hours upon hours, lying away, staring at Kep, staring at himself in a mirror.[break][break]

His reflection no longer caused him self-loathing. Instead, it felt alien, like bodily dysphoria. Was it really him that stared back?[break][break]

Yesterday, he and an assortment of men raided a penthouse, and quickly before night could even fall, ended seven lives. And the entire time, he wonders. Was it worth it? He embraced what came before in his life.[break][break]

He leans against the wall, black bags beneath his eyes, the Granite Cave entrance, this particular one anyways, guarded by him, and directly in front of him, the blonde who he considered a mentor; Gavin. The guy could see the state Ashley was in after everything went down yesterday plain as day. Misery.[break][break]

Gavin did tell him before. The warning to not push too far.[break][break]

Here they were now. Ashley heeded the warning, and did so anyways.

In contrast to Ashley Shepard, Gavin had slept perfectly fine... by his standards, which were far from ideal. He's tired, too, but it's different from the bone-deep soul-sucking exhaustion that his companion is clearly feeling.[break][break]

Puffing on his cigarette, Gavin glances away from the entry he'd been surveying to look him over.[break][break]

Jolting awake, Ash's exhaustion was easy to see, as he looks upwards and tries to smile. Gavin's words almost seemed to pull him out of a dream.[break][break]

"Regrets." He quietly laments, his head resting against the cave wall, his eyes closing shut. "I-" He takes a moment, and rubs at his eyes. "-didn't exactly sleep... after." He was rubbing at his eyes, groaning in discontent as he sat up straight, pressing himself fully into the cave side wall.[break][break]

He groans. How many times did he need help from Gavin? He could handle himself, he didn't need him as a crutch like this. Or Isaac... but he could hardly stand up on his own right now.[break][break]

"I wish I listened to you."[break][break]

Honesty and sincerity, he just looks down to the flooring of the cave. A small puddle made, letting him look at a man he didn't recognize looking back at him.

Ashley's next words do cause some confusion, shown in the furrow of his brow and the slight frown that touches his lips. He hadn't provided any caution against the act. Hadn't said much at all.[break][break]

He knew what it was to hate your father, after all.[break][break]

Parsing the words more thoroughly, however, he lands on Ashley's meaning and lifts his head, lips parting on the realization.[break][break]

"Ah. That."[break][break]

Don't dive too deep, too soon. Not his exact words, but the sentiment.[break][break]

"Your father was not a good man."[break][break]

But he lets that hang in the air, opening the floor for Ashley to say more on the subject if he wished.

Too deep, too soon.[break][break]

Now the Rocket tar pit permeated all around him, and all he had to show for it was his own regret. He grabs towards his face. "Yeah. I know." He knew that the man he saw as a good mentor was right, after all, Ashley listened to him. But then he didn't heed the warning.[break][break]

He wipes his sweat away.[break][break]

"He's not. But I'm supposed to feel better after it, right? Like... I did good. Right? Why do I feel so cold then?" He looks down at himself. The answer, that didn't come so easy. He felt empty. Like he just ended a curse that had been with him, but he missed it. Relished in it.[break][break]

He hates himself for that now. He does.[break][break]

He grabs towards himself. "When I look in a mirror now... I see someone else. But I know it's still me." He can't even look Gavin in the eyes. He just keeps staring at that small puddle. The man in the reflection.

Gavin shrugs, discarding his cigarette and crushing the filter beneath his boot. He keeps his eyes on the cave's entry, though his attention remains rapt on the words spoken by the other.[break][break]

"Emotions are rarely so black and white."[break][break]

It was a hard lesson he'd been forced to learn through Rocket.[break][break]

It would be easy to say he regretted the lives he'd taken to preserve his own... but did he, really? There was guilt, certainly, and nightmares that plagued him still, but guilt and regret were different things.[break][break]

He'd do it again, if he had to.[break][break]

"It isn't something that can be taken back," he says at last. "It is hardly the most heinous thing we've done."

Sawyer looks back at him. The reflection him. It is him. It always was in him. It just was locked behind a gate, a number of padlocks that slowly came undone. Ashley grabs at his face with his left hand, and wipes away the sweat.[break][break]

It isn't something that can be taken back. That makes sense. Of course it isn't. But it's one of the worse he's done. And though it wasn't for Gavin, he had never done so in anger. He had never let it fuel his fire so much before. Right now, it's like pulling the rug from under him.[break][break]

Because he liked it. And that scared him more than anything.[break][break]

But before he can respond...[break][break]

"HEY!" A trio of people were down the way, walking towards them. They would see Gavin, and freeze. They considered running... when they threw out three Pokeballs. From them, an Exeggutor, Donphan, and a Vigoroth come out, prepared to tussle.[break][break]

Ash scowls, and turns to Gavin. "Guess this will have to wait." He gets up onto his feet, and tosses out Maple the Glaceon. "Freeze the tunnel." And with it, a SNOWSCAPE throws the whole cave into a snowy flurry.

Attention on the entrance, Gavin notices the officers at the same time they notice the Rocket duo. He glares in warning, hoping they'd commit to their cold feet and turn around... but they wouldn't be that lucky. Of course not.[break][break]

A noise of disdain rises in his throat.[break][break]

Snow flurries around them, so Gavin reaches for two pokeballs, clicking his tongue.[break][break]

One belongs to his Cryogonal, the snowflake spinning slowly as it sets up ACID ARMOUR. With his Sandslash having fainted in an earlier skirmish, the underboss sends out a Glaceon of his own. The Ice-type's SNOW CLOAK serves to disguise him, and his ICY BODY provides regeneration in the gelid weather.[break][break]

He proves to be special in his own right; a stream of ice spreads from his open maw, a SHADOWY ice beam to CHILL the Donphan.[break][break]

Bolstered by the speed from Gavin's SHADOW MIASMA, the Glaceon leaps clear of the incoming ROLLOUT as the Donphan seeks revenge.[break][break]

"Which one do you want?"[break][break]

Gavin indicates their other two foes

As Gavin's own Cryogonal appears, as well as his Glaceon, the duo showcase the power of Shadow Pokemon, having Ashley turn to the side, and ponder. How much stronger could he be if he just embraced it?[break][break]

To Gavin's question, as the Donphan has their Rollout near them, as the Exeggutor attempts to PSYSHOCK his Cryogonal, and the Vigoroth attempts to THROAT CHOP on Maple to little success thanks to SNOW CLOAK, Ashley smiles.[break][break]

His answer? "All of them. Maple? Blizzard." Under the snowy terrain? All of them would be hit guaranteed; the Donphan, the Exeggutor, and the Vigoroth. All are now subjected to the fierce icy winds, made stronger by the shadowy ice beam that blasted the Donphan, doing a hefty amount of damage. The Exeggutor takes quite a hefty hit itself, while Vigoroth seems fine, though definitely didn't like that.[break][break]

"This'll be over quickly. We have the advantage." He says, deadpan, eyes on the field, a smirk. Ice was their trio's downfall. The only one that may be an issue? The Vigoroth.

The underboss laughs as the PSYSHOCK impacts. Cryogonal's particularly effective ACID ARMOUR tanks the blow, and a click of Gavin's tongue sees his Glaceon COPY the PSYSHOCK against Vigoroth.[break][break]

It is not only Ashley who enjoys the thrill of the hunt a bit too much. Gavin's golden gaze gleams as he watches the battle unfold, his Cryogonal targeting the Donphan with a FREEZE-DRY.[break][break]

"We would win regardless."[break][break]

He smirks, believing it. They'd been taught well what losing meant.

Watching the abject fear from the poor Leaguers has Ash's confidence raise indefinitely, and with a fast nod, he gestures with a hand. "Damn right we would."[break][break]

With Acid Armour tanking a blow for the Cryogonal, and a Psyshock on the Vigoroth from Gavin's Glaceon, it's clear how much he loves the fight, the hunt. So much defeat had wettened his appetite for victory, and watching the Freeze-Dry hit the Donphan, Ash responds in turn for Maple.[break][break]

"Freeze and dry that plant out." And Maple does so, spinning in the air with a flip as he the Donphan tries to ROLLOUT to Maple, to no avail with Snow Cloak. The Exeggutor taking yet another super-effective blast, as the Vigoroth attempts a REVERSAL on Gavin's Glaceon. Exeggutor, on the other hand, goes for the big PSYCHIC to try and get something on the Cryogonal.[break][break]

But as Maple smiles, it matches Ashley's. "Think you can knock'em out first?" He's getting arrogant, cocky even. Almost wanting to make a game of it.

A younger Gavin might've rose eagerly to the challenge, pushing his team to their limits for the sake of showing off. Jaded by experience, the smirk fades as he shakes his head.[break][break]

"War is not a game."[break][break]

Gavin clicks his tongue, and Cryogonal throws up a LIGHT SCREEN to weaken the incoming PSYCHIC. The bulky construct takes the special attack without flinching, spinning slowly through the air as ever.[break][break]

Two clicks and a sharp hand gesture sees his Glaceon endure the incoming attack, relying on its ICE BODY to regenerate after the devastating blow. It's worth it to ensure the Vigoroth is off its guard, likely unable to dodge the PSYCHIC that Glaceon COPIES to weaponize against Exeggutor's own ally.

War wasn't a game. Ash had been blinded by honest wishful thinking, his eye twitching, his eyes set forward. He knew that. He did. War was hell, always in all ways, but maybe it was a good thing to remind him of the negative implications of war.[break][break]

"I know. But battles can be fun too."[break][break]

After all, there was an entire League made for that. Gym Leaders, raring to go for duels, and fights, and fisticuffs. Everything inbetween. Even if this battle they were within was war. But... he wasn't going to be arguing with him.[break][break]

Because he knew the weight this war had. All too well.[break][break]

The Vigoroth grabs at its head, and begins slamming it into the Granite Cave wall to the Psychic that strikes it, his head feeling like a grape being popped, as Cryogonal weakens the incoming Psychic. With it, as the Donphan came up behind Maple, it ends up getting a hit on the Glaceon with its third ROLLOUT, speeding right by towards where the Vigoroth was.[break][break]

As the Vigoroth hits the ground, passing out from the sheer pain, the Exeggutor is surprised by Maple jumping into the air from the Rollout, using the momentum to prepare.[break][break]

"From above. Another Blizzard, all on the tree." And there came the downpour of the frigid nightmare from Maple, all focused on the Exeggutor, who hit the ground too.[break][break]

Gavin felt it, too. The bloodlust. The rush. There was nothing like the adrenaline a good fight provided.[break][break]

He'd hung up posters of an all-star Corviknight in his closet (away from his parents' notice, or they'd force him to take it down). He'd bought tickets from scalpers and bunked off school to sneak off to the games.[break][break]

He'd loved the idea of it all, before Rocket had taught him of battling for survival, not sport.[break][break]

In these battles, the Vigoroth's skull splits against the rock and blood smears along its surface. Glaceon lunges for the fallen primate, jaws bared for a killing blow before the red light from a pokeball swallows the Vigoroth up.[break][break]

Growling, Glaceon takes its anger out with a BLIZZARD of his own, COPYING Maple's momentum.[break][break]

As the Donphan tries to use its ROLLOUT to escape the swirling storm, it slams into Cryogonal's BANEFUL BUNKER. Poison saps the last of its strength, and the Pokemon uncurls with a grunt as it faints.[break][break]

Gavin glares down the trainers, seeing their fear. "Go."[break][break]

There was no need to kill; a lesson had been learned.
