"I better not be, to you at least." He chuckled at that, giving him a little shoulder bump before quickly checking to make sure the mac n cheese was coming along without issues. Surely, he wouldn't mess up such a simple job as reheating some leftover mac, but he couldn't be too careful with his bad culinary luck.

"What are you talking about? You look daring and dangerous. It's very sexy." It was somewhat true, but more so it just made him nervous. Seeing Lam in any kind of pain made something frantic and bitter coil up in his throat. He swallowed it down, but it rose up whenever he looked at him and could see the bruise forming under the skin.

He grinned at that, "I do love rewards." He was simple in that way, very easy to motivate. Like an over-eager, food motivated puppy. It didn't take much to encourage him, especially when Lam was involved.

His fingers continued to coax through smooth hair as his eyes focused briefly again on the mac. It was about finished. Grabbing a pair of plates, he scooped a large plop of cheesy pasta onto both plates. I love you, He felt something warm stir up in him at that. He'd never get used to that. "I love you too, Lam. More than anything. Now sit down and eat. It's five-star mac'n che's." He fumbled over his words, trying to make it sound exotic.

You’re the most important to me.” With a quiet sigh, he turned the frozen veggie bag over and pressed the other side to his face. His brows pinched together. “Is it? I think I probably look lumpy.” His nose wrinkled as he glanced up at Rook’s profile. Maybe when the swelling had gone down they could revisit the whole sexy aspect of it. Right then, though, he felt kind of like a misshapen potato.

Leaning up, he kissed Rook’s chin. “I know you do. And you deserve them all.” And he thoroughly believed that. No one else had this sort of effect on him. Whatever he could give the other, he would.

“I love you more,” he muttered back, leaning away only when Rook moved to divvy up the mac n’ cheese onto plates. He did as he was told, though, and moved over to the little two-person table and sat himself down with one of the plates. “Sounds fancy.” He let out a breath of laughter, finally managing to ease up some more, “Thanks for the mac’n che’s.” With one hand he shoveled some of the noodles in his mouth. But as soon as Rook was within arm’s reach again, the other hand was latching onto his partner’s again. Like a little kid reluctant to let go of any contact.

“This is really good,” he added, mouth full and words muddled. Granted, just about anything would have tasted good in the moment. He hadn’t realized how hungry he’d been after going steadily all day. As he ate, though, his eyes grew heavier and his movements more sluggish. Exhaustion creeping in on him now that the tension had relaxed and the adrenaline had subsided.

"Not truuuuuue." He replied, a hum in his voice. There was no way that could be, but they still liked to compete on it from time to time. He wouldn't pretend that a part of this didn't bother him. Lam was adventurous and brave, he was moving up in the world and combatting new problems. Rook felt like he was stuck and helpless to the other. It wasn't Lam's fault of course, but he couldn't help but wish that he could help him more.

For now, however, what he could do was support Lam. At least right now. Mac n' cheese entirely devoured, he picked up the plates and set them in the sink to wash later. "Alright, time for a good old-fashioned nap." He chuckled, returning to the other to clumsily pick him up. "I'm being romantic, aren't I?"

Carrying Lam to the bedroom, he carefully deposited him in the bed once again. Then, kicking off his slippers, he fell in beside him. He couldn't help him today, but that didn't mean he couldn't in the future. He just hoped it would never happen again, if he could prevent it. Somehow. "I love you." He said, giving him a kiss on the cheek before curling up against him.

[attr="class","sam-banner-up-blurb"]Despite his exhaustion, he was able to shoot Rook a somewhat huffy look. “Is true.” How could he not? This was someone who fretted over him and looked after him. He didn’t really like causing Rook worry, but it was still nice to have someone who stuck around enough to wait for him. To be concerned if he’d made it out in one piece or not.

By the time he was done eating, Lam was practically asleep at the table. The act of holding onto the fork firmly enough to stab at the noodles was a challenge in and of itself. Still, he was hungry—hungrier than he’d actually thought he was, and he managed to shovel it all down. Even if it was at a slow, sleepy pace. Reluctantly, he had to let go of Rook’s hand when he moved to clear the plates away, but he didn’t protest beyond a drowsy whine.

He could’ve pulled himself up and moved. Made the teetering steps down the short hall to face plant into the bed, but the act of moving felt impossible. His limbs were heavy and they ached, steadily growing stiff now that he wasn’t pumped with adrenaline or the need to keep moving and pushing through task after task. Battle after battle.

Maybe it shouldn’t have been a surprise, then, that Rook scooped him up, but in his sleepy daze the surprised note still squawked up his throat as it happened. But he settled fast and hung on, not bothering to protest or say he could walk. He leaned his head against him, eyes immediately shutting. “Very romantic.”

Lam wasted no time snuggling down under the blankets as soon as he made contact with the mattress, curling up against cool sheets and soft pillows. His eyes squinted open, watching Rook as he settled in beside him. An arm draped around his waist to tug him closer until they were a tangle of limbs and safe warmth. “Love you,” his lips curved upward as he was kissed. His head then tucked against Rook’s, and finally he let slumber start to take him as he murmured on. “You do so much for me. Thank you.”
