It was sometime after Landon had damn near killed him. Ashley was bandaged up and cared for by Jayden, and once Jayden left, he was here, leaned against the wall. Forcing himself to his feet now, he resembled someone from Fight Club on the losing side: a busted lip, a half-lidded eye, bandages around the head.[break][break]

He was in no state to continue, but Maple kept trying his best to stay by his side and help cool him off, Ashley would mess with his communicator. "Anyone there?" He tries to message whoever would listen. "It's Ash. If there's anything I can do now, I-" He winces. He can hear nothing from it.[break][break]

Maple sulkily looks on ahead, walking quietly forward, and constantly looking back. He was tired too, but his Trainer just went through a hellish fight.[break][break]

"Isaac? Cyg? Eris? Gavin? ... Kep?" He didn't know if his words were being jammed right now. Or if it was busted.[break][break]

No answer.[break][break]

"Dammit." He keeps limping forward. His vision is shaky. Unknown to him at the moment, he was making his way towards a familiar face. "Hello?" Maple is first to come over, rushing towards her, and immediately providing a cool breeze of air. He just wanted to help, bless the little ice Eeveelution's heart.

El Sunderland had done their best to bandage her up, but she was still in rough shape. One arm is completely unusable. One leg nearly so, what with the-- the arrow puncture, and all. Any time she tried to move it her hip flexor screamed so after a while, she’d just stopped.

Cyg swallowed-- or tried to, at least. Her throat was beyond dry-- from screaming. Crying. Screaming some more. She was covered in blood-- so much so that she didn’t know how much of it was hers and how much of it was Simas. And Feldspars. And Twilights--

--a brush of cool air ghosts across her face and for one moment she’s scared it’s fucking Laurence Anderson and his whackadoo fucking ice powers come back to finish her off. Part of her is thankful. She doesn’t have the energy to fight, anymore; she’s a gutted candle. The fire had burned in her, hot and holy, and now it was gone, and instead of cleansed in its wake she was crusted in ash and blood.

The teeth never come. Instead, a cold ice pack is pressed upon her forehead, in the form of a Maple. It might be refreshing, but with a quiet mew, limping onto the scene is Ashley... wide-eyed and panicking. "Oh shit, Sunshine. You look worse than I do."[break][break]

Hello pot, have you met kettle?[break][break]

Quickly pulling off his jacket, he rips a sleeve of it off. It wasn't even one of his favorites, so it was worth the tear. "Maple, douse it." And wtih a nod, she utilizes CHILLING WATER on the sleeve, as she holds it out for Cygne to wipe herself off a little.[break][break]

"What happened to you?" He tries to laugh, knowing the question was likely about to go around and come back around, as he tries, for a moment, to look tough... only to buckle under the weight of his own body.[break][break]

On his knees now, he feels ready to kill over any second.[break][break]

He sulkily looks to the ground. He'll have to remember... but he makes a smile. Sadness does take him a moment, but he isn't about to let that stop him. He tries his communicator again. Knowing it's busted. "Isaac? Come on you piece of shit, work with me. Can you hear me?"[break][break]

Nada. He lets the communicator fall to his side.

The ice is cool against her forehead and her eyes flutter open, vision coming into focus slowly, like a shifting kaleidoscope.

“A-sh?” she manages, lips dry, the taste of iron on her tongue. Trying to speak is like swallowing sandpaper. She squeezes her eyes shut again and tries to push herself up on her elbows, but everything hurts and she just falls back again.

“Ashley fuckin' Sawyer,” she says, her mouth curling up into a grin as a cough rattles through her, ending on a pained gasp as it jars something loose inside of her that should not be loose. She clutches one hand to her broken ribs, knuckles blackened and bruised from their own punishment, and swallows a sob.

Hearing Cygne speak was, while nice, stressful in its own right. The way she spoke, and tries to push herself up as his face mat in a bit of fear. Shit, was she dying? He tries his best to at least clean off her face from that excess of blood. How... how much was on her?[break][break]

How much of it was her own?[break][break]

But, hearing her speak like that only has him trying not to chuckle. Even if he wasn't looking great either, he seemed to be in a moderately better shape. "Phrasing, Sunshine." He's chuckling, but it's weak, and filled with worry, as he helps her sit up. "Maple. Mind giving her a cool pillow for a minute to sit up?" The Glaceon nods quickly as he walks where her head would lay before laying down, as Ash lets her head rest on Maple's back. A cool pillow.[break][break]

"To answer your question though-" the answer is caught in his throat a moment. And he looks away. He forces it out of himself, the subtle crack in his voice painful. "-about the same as you, I take it. Bongo, he..." He grips towards his own mouth, and holds back the tears, as he forces his smile back over it. A small façade.[break][break]

"Anyways. What about you? If talking hurts, let me know. I'll have Maple give you some chilling water." Maple mews behind Cygne. A good boy.[break][break]

Ashley's concern. This is just him nursing Kep after their expedition. Only difference was, Kepler assured him he'd be fine. Cygne though... she looked rough. Really rough. He prepares to pull out whatever first aid he has to help. And all he has?[break][break]

Painkillers. That'd do. "This should help with the pain. Can you swallow?" Ibuprofen might be helpful. He doesn't exactly have much past that.

Something damp pads at her face and Cyg frowns, pulling away like an unruly kitten refusing the tongue of its mother. Her hair is thick with clotted blood, and Ash succeeds in wiping pale streaks through the rime of gore.

“No, tha’s what I meant, I think,” she says, coughing and making a pitiful noise and recoiling, curling up in on herself in the fetal position, like she could be buried under this blackest sky and the emptiness that stretched around them for miles. Maple slides underneath her neck and she whimpers again, not wanting to sit up, not wanting to be conscious, not really even wanting to be alive.

She cracks her eyes open as Ash keeps talking, struggling to follow his words. Bongo… Bongo… Bongo had been his Rillaboom, right? “Yeah. Mine too.”

Her best friend. Her baby.

“Mine too, kid.”

She’s curled up against his freakin’ cat, torn between wanting to burrow into the coldness and recoil from it, the memory of Laurence Anderson as much a mental burn as the frostbitten patches across her torso. Ash holds out a handful of what looks like 200-mg Motrin and-- and Cyg can’t help it, she starts laughing.

And despite the pain, she can’t stop. It starts as old-lady sounding giggles and then she’s cackling and then she’s lost in it and there are tears sliding down her face as she turns and buries it into the ground.

Though he does want her to at least hold still so he can clean the blood off, he retracts the jacket rag, and proceeds to sit on his own ass. Instead of trying, he smiles. Tries to lighten the mood. "You kiddin'? Isaac would ring my neck." One of his eyes could barely open right now, and he was pretty sure he sprained something or another. But Cygne... she made noises that made him almost whimper by proxy. It hurt, to say the least.[break][break]

It makes it worse to know that she lost someone too. Ashley's gaze is blank, filled with a hellish sorrow for a moment, as if the whole world was just playing everything for laughs. Pluto's death? Haha, funny joke. Bullet's death? Pure comedy. Kiryu's death? Now isn't that an ironic kill.[break][break]

Bongo... that one was like the punchline that was Ashley's life.[break][break]

Seeing the laugh to the painkiller, the only thing he has on hand, the motrin hopefully something to relieve her. But as she laughs, it's... sad. Like, watching her breakdown. And Ashley was in her place just months ago during Meteno. But as she cackles, and begins crying, all he can do is watch. He's not horrified. He's not even dejected. He just lets her weep.[break][break]

"Can you tell me about... whomever they were?" He asks, moving to place a hand in her's, if she allows it. "A therapist, they uh... they taught me that talking through it helps. And it does. Please."[break][break]

It's the least he can do. He just hopes that she doesn't hate herself, or... do what he attempted on Mt. Pyre.

Ash shakes his head. "Haven't seen him. I... he'll be okay. Your boy has gone through ringer after ringer, and is still standing on the other end." His gaze softens, and longingly, he looks away. A stronger person than Ash ever could be.[break][break]

But as he keeps a hold of her hand, he hears the words. The ones he knew all too well. The best friend. The partner. The soldier.[break][break]

My fault.[break][break]

That last one has him shut his eyes. Because about half a year ago, he had thought the same thing. He was so hellbent in thinking it was his fault, he damn near did something about it, until he was snapped out of it. And there were a million things that went through his mind, every thought Cygne must have, every feeling that must be pressing down on her.[break][break]

"Yeah..." he wipes at his face, nodding. "Easy to think that. Your fault. It eats away at your mind, and puts twisted ideas in your head. And then you do something unforgivable, and the cycle continues." Isaac's eye. The way that Bongo was the one to ensure it. His lip quivers, but his grip tightens. "Not gonna tell you it isn't. What I will tell you-"[break][break]

He stares, leaning down now beside her, and trying his best to put on a brave face.[break][break]

"-is that they loved you. And they wouldn't want you to think you were what caused it. Each soldier knows the hell that is war. Each marches on, and they know instinctually the risks." He gives the best smile he can right now, which is pricked by some tears.[break][break]

His brother was the reason he could smile. Thank you, Isaac Merlo.[break][break]

"Believe it or not... they might still linger in the Borders on Mt. Pyre. You might be able to see them. It helped me."

When Ash says he hasn't seen Isaac, Cyg falls again, head slumping back with a wet squelch. There are myriad cuts along her cheeks, scabbed with dark blood.

"Yeah. Yeah, I fucking know he has," she says, and it is a joyless tone. She stops short of sarcastically thanking Ash for pointing it out.
[break][break]Her hand is black and swollen in his, carpals shattered beyond belief, knuckles rasped raw. There's a stiffness in her wrist. She feels like a board, like a corpse. Ready to lay down and die.

"It is my fault," she snaps, the ferocity of it a sharp sting in her throat. "He wouldn't have been here if it wasn't for me. Wouldn't have fought if it wasn't for me. None of them would have." The guilt was rolling inside of her, fighting with the pain, the frustration. She felt like she might vomit if she had anything in her stomach and hadn't dry-retched it all out hours ago.

"It's bullshit. They're not soldiers. They're my fucking family. And I got them murdered. So you could do us all a favor and leave me here to die."

Taken aback, he has to steel himself a little. He doesn't want to argue with Cygne. Truth be told, he liked this woman, so to see her... similar to him on Mt. Pyre, he felt a duty to Isaac Merlo. He stopped, retracted his hand, and took a breath in.[break][break]

"That what they would want too?" He attacks from the other angle. The fallen. He met them on the mountain that day, felt the love they had, and felt the burden, the curse to have to keep going.[break][break]

He knows damn well if they're family, that it isn't.[break][break]

He sits next to Cygne, pulling his knees up towards his chest, and leaning in. "Buried two today. Both of them gave their lives for me. I never asked for it. I never wanted it." He withdraws further into himself, and shivers. He can still feel them behind him. Bongo was the only one he could mention due to him... his wounds. But the other two...[break][break]

"I'm not doing this for you."[break][break]

Not moving a muscle, he sulkily eyes the ground.[break][break]

"Doing this for Isaac. Your Pokemon. Your friends. You don't get to die."[break][break]

If only his comms were working... lightbulb turns on. "Your comm still working?"

She laughs, a horrible, mirthless sound. “Probably. Who cares what they want. They’re dead.” She tries to breath through a broken nose and just makes a cut-off croak, wincing, bruises dancing on her cheeks.

She doesn’t know why she’s so angry. She doesn’t dislike Ash.

“How do you ask for one of your friends to get murdered, Ash?” She snarls, only the weakness in her body stopping her from sitting up and fucking strangling him, or some shit. “Please tell me so next time I can do it right. We both signed them up for this shit. Spare me.”

She does try to sit up, then, a red hot shock of pain wracking through her shattered ribs, and she bites down a muffled scream, thrashing her head back against the ground and not caring that it hurt as she digs her elbows in and drags herself to a sit.

”Doing this for Isaac. Fucking— whatever. You cut his goddamn eye out and— I couldn’t even be mad at you because he loves you so fucking much.”

She huffs, clearing her throat and spitting a wad of blood off into the distance.

“No. I broke it. But I can probably fix yours if it gets you out of here faster. Give it here.”

No matter how hateful Cygne is in the moment, it's the result of everything that happened here, every trauma, every kill that took the lives of their Pokemon that put them in that vulnerable moment. So, even when she cuts deeply into him with her words, how he remembers what he's done to Jelly, Bass, and Bongo, he just...[break][break]

Looks at her with pity.[break][break]

It isn't like he's trying to pity her. He wouldn't speak any more until she was done. At least, until those words stopped. She needed an outlet to get this out. Believe it or not, this was in some small way, therapeutic. If no a little hurtful.[break][break]

Knowing his mistakes. The Pokemon. Isaac's eye. The trail of bodies behind him, he doesn't even respond. Just... lets her go.[break][break]

And when the words go to the communicator, he hands it over, silently.[break][break]

For a moment, he takes a deep breath in, and back out. He doesn't fire back with a snarky line, he doesn't respond with his own story. He just sits there. "..."

"You're fucking infuriating." But her anger has burnt itself out. If he's not going to respond, there's no point.

She peels back the casing on his comm unit and identifies the frazzled wires, forgetting about Ash for a second as she fiddles with it to get things back into place, make the right things connect again. It's methodical. It's comforting, the act of repairing what is broken. The pattern of machinery and circuitry. This is what she should be doing. Not murder, not war.

"Just some fudged wiring. I can get a connection again. Might not be perfect, but it'll read."

With a twist of her fingers, the unit gives off a powerful squeal, signalling its burst back to life.
