Rumors had it that Fairburne would be soon leaving her position to assume a new role within the league.

Doug didn't have much of a relationship with Katherine. He could count the amount of times they had directly interacted with one another on one hand, and neither of them could be considered a good impression for either party. But...

She was still the strongest trainer he knew, next to kyle lopez.

If the elite 4 challenge was going to mean anything, he couldn't put it off any longer.

"Good evenin', Ms. Fairburne. Thank ya kindly for seein' me on such short notice." The youth said as he walked into The Malevolent's E4 chambers. "Sorry as well— yer schedule must be hell, given everythin' that's going on."

Over him, Tapu Lele hovered idly whilst looking around with open curiosity, surveying the site. It was very different from Melody Miro's own. It wasn't broken to bits, for one.

"Do we need to go over the interview first?" He asked as he came to a stop at the challenger's edge of the arena, tugging at one of his gloves. "I hear that's a thing now."

Whatever it accomplished, he hoped it was worth the anticlimax the uninformed challenger had to endure.

The rumours that surrounded Katherine were rarely wrong. Some may have been exaggerated at times, but there was a shred of truth to them all. She was indeed a witch, as cait alfric once claimed. She was also a thief, as Zac Ramsay could attest. Even the tiny doubt people attached to her allegiance wasn't misplaced, for the Malevolant was indeed a part of Rocket for a time.

"You've known me long enough to call me Katherine, Doug," the Jinxed wasn't her average challenger, and when taking into account her upcoming promotion, she figured it was best to grace him with some kindness. At least for now. "But yes, you're welcome. I doubt this will take long."

Her scarlet eyes strayed from him to his legend, inspecting the Tapu as they stared into their many reflections. Her battle chamber consisted of nothing but mirrors; wherever one would dare look, they'd find someone else staring back. "No, we can skip the interview. If you'd like, you can ask to have it conducted by someone else," the blank mask of neutrality is maintained across her features, unblemished by emotion.

"For the record, I wouldn't advice using Lele for this battle. It's unnecessary," but Katherine leaves the choice to Doug, instead choosing to send out her first Pokemon. A Shiny Mimikyu materializes in front of her, its stare empty and vacant.

"'pologies, Katherine. Didn't wanna assume." He says with a small smile, somewhat surprised but doing his best to take the unexpected kindness in stride. Don't look a gift horse in the mouth as they say.

Likewise with the interview.

"Gotcha. I'll run it by Callan Young next time I see him." He said as his digits ran over the pokeballs on his side. Then, he chuckled. "Maybe MATIAS SILPH, actually."

Something something destroy rocket should get him through the door, right?

Katherine's suggestion was yet another gift he probably shouldn't question. He liked to think he could read between the lines. Sometimes.

"She kinda just tagged along, to be honest." He said wryly, glancing up at Tapu Lele. "Wouldn't expect her to pull up."

Maybe if Katherine's Patron popped up— hopefully not.

Lele had tried to play with every legendary she had met so far— including the Sea Hoenn ones trying to kill him. He had no idea how that would go if she met Giratina of all things.

Tapu Lele stared at her own reflection as she hovered in front of a mirror, watching rows upon rows of Leles stretch back as far as the eye could see. Soundlessly, she reached out and tapped the mirror before her... before slipping inside it as its surface rippled.

Was that how she disappeared whenever he lost sight of her?

"... Well, with that out of the way." He said as he turned his gaze over to the new pokemon before him.

Mimikyu. He had fought a few, but he knew nothing of Katherine's. Any previous experience would only be mildly useful for now. Gather intel...?

He considered his choices, digits tapping at his pokeball-carrier and sending the device wheeling, his pokemon selection flicking away at his finger tips.

He plucked a net ball.

'No time to feel it out.' The format was a 6-mon team 3v3 match. He was down to 5 due to Lele already; he wouldn't be doing himself any favors by showing his hand too early.

With a swipe of his hand, the net ball flew through the air, landing before the soldier to release a red arachnid onto the field.

"Look sharp, Tsuchigumo." Doug said to the Ariados as he lifted a hand in the air. The spider took stock of its surroundings wearily, offput by the infinity of reflections that surrounded, before its eyes inevitably fell upon Katherine and her Mimikyu.

"Ya showed yer hand first, so..." He scratched at the back of his head. "Ya wanna start?"

Never hurt to be polite.

With a flick of her wrist, Katherine sends her Mimikyu darting forward, its ghostly veil trailing behind it like a cloak of mist. It bounces from one mirror to the other, zig-zagging left to right and right to left. The eerily silent Pokemon produces no sound even when it leaps, almost as though it were a weightless spectre made of wind-- nothing more than a simple breeze.

When the Malevolent snaps her fingers, the ghost acts, responding to her cue with a twist of its tail to conjure flames. Its BURNING JEALOUSY spews forth in a current of flames, seeking to engulf the bug-type with an inferno.

"Ready." The many legs of the challenger's Ariados coiled underneath its weight as the ghost launched forth, its eyes barely able to keep up with the specter in the chaos created the mirror house. Nonetheless, it stood its ground, legs taut as springs—

And then a blaze was unleashed towards it.

—Not what Doug expected, but he could try and work with it.

"Unfurl!"

The spider's abdomen's stingers moved suddenly.

One snapped to side and shot a viscous, darkly tinged thread to the nearest mirror, ripping it out before throwing it in the blazes path, for however much it might help.

The other snapped forward, launching its own blanket of thick, sticky threads, still oily with the same unknown, purple substance as it expanded outwards into an inverted star.

The threaded webbing latched onto several of the crystal panels around them, before the Spider gave it a yank. Several rips, tears and cracks filled the room as some of the stronger threads managed to not only hold on, but yank mirrors out of place.

Noxious fumes arose from the burning webbing as the flames seared through and into the webbing, permeating the air with their toxic venom as the Spider cried out and darted behind one of the torn mirrors...
