Harper’s belly rumbled. She hadn’t eaten since breakfast the day before. A muffin and hasbrown didn’t go very far with seven mouths to feed. But if she asked Daddy for a bigger cut, he might catch on to the new friends she’d been adding. Which Harper doubted he’d welcome with open paws. So, she needed to scrounge up some extra cash.

Maybe it was time for a magic show? PUll out the table and stage a silly little card tricks? Nope! Hunger made keeping track of stuff super-duper hard. While doing a security test seemed like a great idea, it wasn’t something she did during the day. So, that meant going back to her roots. A simple pickpocketing would get enough for dinner somewhere—as long as she found a good target.

With Tinkerbell at her side, Harper wove her way through the crowd like a hungry Veluza. Finally, her eyes alighted on a potential mark. Their clothing looked decent and their wallet was in easy reach. A vicious grin expanded to her cheeks as she gave a nod to her companion. The pink blob raised its hammer, pretendding to stretch. The point briefly went to the target as Harper went in for the grab.

In front of the target, a Floragato tripped. His yo-yo spilled from his paws as he lunged after it. His green body went horizontal, a near collision imminent. A simple and sweet bit of distraction.

A nimble hand reached out for the bulge in the person’s pocket. Something she’d done a thousand times before. It came as naturally as breathing. Cha-Ching!

Unfortunately for all parties involved, this was not Raph’s first Gogoat Rodeo. The Floragato distraction did little more than cause him to raise his perpetually irritated-looking brow a few centimeters and pause, until the obstacle in his path had moved and he could continue on his way.

Small and light fingers though Harper had, Raph had been picking pockets and doing petty crimes since before she was a glimmer in someone’s eye-- so as her hand reached for his wallet, his reached back and snagged her wrist, squeezing tightly for a bit as he turned and prepared to lambast whoever it was had made the mistake of thinking he was an easy mark--

“Oh. You’re just a kid.” He couldn’t hide the disappointment from his voice-- he’d been hoping for a fight, but punching a 7-year-old was below even him.

As the man ignored him, Twiggy couldn’t resist a huff. He’d been practicing that for days! And this goon just treated him like the yellow signal on a traffic light—gave him a single glance and sped up. Holding his yo-yo, the cat watched as his trainer drew closer to her target. Sure, she did card tricks, but this was the real magic.

The girl did her best to draw in silently. She waited for another woman to walk by, diving in behind her. As subtle as a summer breeze, her fingers dove for Raphael’s back pocket. Even from a distance, red eyes could see a pretty nice bulge. And she didn’t think it was a banana. Her fingers edged past the seam. Carefully trimmed nails brushed pay dirt.

“!?” A vice-like hand crushed her wrist in its grasp. “Shit!” Harper gasped, instantly pulling back. “I wasn’t doing anything!” Her fingers clawed at Raphael’s grip, resembling an animal caught in a trap. Whatever he said wasn’t heard. Let go! Let go! Let go! All she knew was that she was caught and she didn’t like it. It’d been years since someone nabbed her like this. Waterworks threatened—the good old Krookodile tears.

Dropping his yo-yo, Twiggy raced over to help. But it seemed his trainer reacted quicker.

This guy was big. He could brain her like an egg—kid or not.

Instincts kicked in.

She tried to drive a knee into his junk.

Raph held the kid’s wrist, lifting it slightly out at an angle so he could see their face. Their other hand clawed and slapped at him, but they might have been hitting a brick wall, he was so unbothered.

Then she kneed him in the nuts, and all pretense of sympathetic, adult, grown ass man was dropped like a ton of bricks as he made a whale-noise of pain and crunched in on himself, letting go of Harper’s wrist in lieu of grabbing between his legs to try and isolate the hurt.

He landed on his knees.

Harper peered back up at the dark man. Those red eyes were reminiscent of a feral cat. Full of panic and teetering on the urge of lashing out. Those initial hits were about as useful as hitting a wall with a feather. Her Pokemon wanted to intervene, but she was in the way.

This didn’t stop the Tinkaton from lifting its hammer though. Little arms even went so far as to draw it back. She just had to be super-duper careful about which leg she crushed! It’d be cake. But, before she did anything, the guy dropped like a ton of bricks. Tinkerbell blinked in shock—dark eyes flitted to her hammer to make sure it hadn’t fallen.

If he’d gotten to finish that question, the pickpocket might have played along. Some weirdos just gave her stuff. No strings attached. Others were total weirdos. With her hand free, Harper danced out of Raphael’s range. “Serves you right! You shouldn’t just grab somebody like that! It hurt.” Never mind the fact that the pinkette had been trying to fleece him like an overgrown Mareep.

The righteousness quickly faded, however, as the guy dropped to his knees. Curious, the wannabe kitten leaned closer. “You, uh, okay, mister?” She gnawed on the inside of her cheek. “I didn’t kick ya too hard, did I?”
